It is a difficult one...we do Filles that sing in French, and sometimes in English. But now we have an issue: Aylin Prandi is born in Paris, but has released a surprising album with.. Italian classics from the sixties, seventies and eighties. A little bit comparable to what Mareva Galanter did a few years ago with french yé-yé classics. But in case you are in doubt if we should discuss her work here, just look at her version of Adriano Celentano's 24.000 Baci . One song is a French original: Twist À Saint-Tropez, originally by [...]

An English lesson, circa 1991: "AWWWWWWN-OHHHHHHH-MAAAHHHH- TOHHH-PEEEEEEEYAAAAAHHHH-AAHH- AHH!" It's okay; don't be scared, that was just my old English teacher metamorphosing into a disturbing living embodiment of Mumm-Ra The Ever-Living . Yes, it was a terrifying sight that could easily have scarred a youth in his formative years. But in retrospect, I can see she was trying to use the word in a way that would demonstrate its very essence. And I haven't forgotten it since. Gold Star for my teacher. The Yé-Yé genre is littered with [...]

The new album by Mareva Galanter (out Oct 20) is called Happy Fiu, and features a few songs in English. See the video for Miss U here . You probably feel the same as me when you hear that song: wa'happened to the ukelele-lovin', ex-Miss France who frolicked through the French sixties wearing a very tight dress? Well, she met Britrockband Little Barrie , and made an album with them. She still cites Serge & Jane as her main influences, but the English songs I heard so far weren't as brilliant as, say, her [...]
Continuing with Doll day on Stop Okay Go, here's a song by the stunning

I've just kicked off my music-related arthouse flick marathon with this bizarrely enchanting & entertaining animated movie, The Triples of Belleville, (also known as Belleville Rendez-vous, or in its sexy native tongue, Les Triplettes de Belleville). Currently on my list, I have La Vie En rose, those two Daft Punk feature films, Heima and then possibly Once. No, wait, come back! Don't worry, I'm not always this artsy-fartsy, offbeat 'indie' type! Just occasionally...Anyway, the movie brought me back to an old idea for a mix of mine, which is a collection of songs from various French chanteuses. Now when it [...]
So I've been trying to catch up on things that have, for some bizarre reason, slipped past me. I'm flabbergasted that I've missed out on Mareva Galanter for so long. First, she's stunningly beautiful (she's a former Miss France), and second, her album Ukuyéyé is a brilliant mix of classic French yé-yé with ukuleles, possibly a reflection of her Polynesian heritage, and electronics, possibly a reflection of it being 2007. Pay close attention to the pre-programmed Casio drum break in the middle of Les Filles, C'est Fait Pour Fair L'amour's femme-pop garage rock, and Laisse Tomber Les Filles's [...]
french electro-pop // yé-yé A former model expanding her work into music or cinema is not surprising. However, it is rare and surprising when she does it so good, and does it in such a fun way. With her debut album Ukuyéyé (2006), Mareva Galanter, once Miss Tahiti and Miss France, delivers a collection of mostly catchy pop-rock songs from the 60's. Her coquettish charm and ukulele manages to give it fresh sound and a lovely feeling to it. Delightful interpretation of the classic. Mareva [...]

2006 is coming to an end - and what a year it was. Not only did I become a father, I got the chance to spend a half hour in the presence of Charlotte Gainsbourg, and stare for 40 minutes in the steelblue eyes of Carla Bruni. Plus I dj'ed at a fantastic Gainsbourg-tribute in Amsterdam, and my ears got treated to a lot of lovely voices and chansons. Here's a roundup of the 15 best Filles Sourires-songs of 2006. 1. Charlotte Gainsbourg - 5.55 Brilliant album (also called 5.55 ), great lyrics. Yes, [...]
