Hey there! You should read this original post on the hill by going here: Reviews:: Marie-Pierre Arthur Aux alentours I'm a lyrics guy. I hunt for narratives, playful use of language to convey emotion and the uncanny ability to add (or remove) a single syllable to make a couplet, verse and even song shine. Not to get all Almost Famous guy, but it's the words that make me love music, not the melody that carries them along. So admittedly, when I listen to Marie-Pierre Arthur's lovely new record, Aux alentours , I [...]

Marie-Pierre Arthur 's brand new album Aux Alentours being a fave drug at FS headquarters right now, we've got an excellent reason to throw a retrospective look over the shoulder: Actually, her self-titled 2009 debut features a lot of that distinctive Opal/ Mazzy Star feel from those Early Recordings times when Kendra Smith was still around – including the highly artful Ma tête à off, a super laidback country slow burner with a tenderly floating quality. Similarly captivating: Her version of Nino Ferrer 's 1972 smash hit La maison près de la fontaine, slightly countrified for the [...]

Problem with Jan/ Feb releases is that they usually are forgotten by the end of the year. Not this one. We already fell in love with Québecoise singer Marie-Pierre Arthur after discovering her on Buck 65 's brilliant 20 Odd Years and her first, self-titled solo effort featuring the lovely folk-pop gem Pourquoi in 2011. Her brand new album, Aux Alentours, features finest eclectic fille pop all the way, combining shades of 70s glam rock, intricate touches of 80s dream pop and glimpses of retro attitude: Her voice encompasses the raw and the smooth perfectly, [...]

On February 7, the new album by Canadian fille Marie-Piere Arthur is released. First single Fil de soie sounds very, very promising. Quirky, fierce, sexy. Marie-Pierre Arthur - Fil de soie

Buck 65's Talkin' Honky Blues was nothing less than a revelation in 2003: There was rap again, whitebread hip-hop even, thrown in a centrifuge together with folk flavour, reverbs of Cash-ified country and Salinger echoes of adolescent blues, refined with a hoarse, rusty voice that certainly didn't come straight outta Compton, but out of Mt. Uniacke , some distant hicktown in Nova Scotia, Can. Rich Terfry/ Buck 65 was already a vet way back then, now celebrating 20 Odd Years with his aptly titled new record. Actually, it feels like a perfected roundup of his earlier efforts, [...]
From Montreal, Canada: Downright enchanting Marie-Pierre Arthur calling out a lovely "Pourquoi", folkpop style. She's also on the new album by FS favorite Buck 65 (review to follow).

One of the best year we've had music wise in a long time. Lot's of new bands that blew my mindhole, veterans that came back on the scene and did the same. A few disappointments (I'm looking at you Mute Math and Dredg) and outright failures (Chris Cornell ... seriously dude?) some kick ass hip hop (Tanya Morgan, Blakroc, Dälek) [...]

Surprisingly, the most well received showcase at M for Montreal was the afternoon Francophone series on the last day. As an English speaker, I was surprised by how into the artists some of the delegates were (yes, it took me a while that for some of them, trying to decipher English lyrics is just as hard as French) but the talent the festival pulled together really helped keep the interest up. First - before I go much further - apologies to Malajube . In the past, I dismissed them as enjoyable but little more. When [...]
(photo: Pascale Boislard) On my recent vacation I stopped in Montréal for a few days and had a chance to do some shopping for new francophone music, partly inspired by my recent crush on Coeur de Pirate. There was a very kind young lady working in one of the record shops on Rue St. Catherine who steered me towards another amazing chanteuse, Marie Pierre Arthur . I was instantly hooked with the opening bars of "Déposer les armes", the first track of her self-titled 2009 release. Imagine an amalgamation [...]

Tribute-albums work two ways: it gives the tributers a chance to give their view on the source, while the listener can get interested in the tributee. I've heard some songs by Nino Ferrer , but apart from Le Sud and Agatha, I'm a newbie when it comes to his legacy. A bunch of Canadian artists are paying their respects on the album Allo Nino , and do that very handsomely. Marie Pierre Arthur's version of La Maison près de la fontaine is in fact absolutely gorgeous. Other FS-faves on this album are Mara Tremblay and Catherine Major. Also [...]

Marie-Pierre Arthur is a new artist that eloquently floats out of the typical singer songwriter dark cloud (in my head at least) as her voice is hauntingly tender and honest. Her interpretation of Daniel Lavoie's classic track Qui Sait , is ripe in subtilities that help display how creative she allows herself to be with her arrangements. Not to mention she is a great bass player. I saw her live last month and automatically had a thing for her. What guy does not find a girl who plays bass with unmatched skill and creativity attractive? The album is [...]
