We would like to introduce you to Mariee Sioux . When we kicked back, threw on the headphones, and listened to this artist we thought "Her tones lightly touch your insides and hold you like your mother used to as she told you bedtime stories. She will make you feel warm and safe. I like that in a person." What did you think? Use a tag or comment to share your thoughts with everyone. Enjoy. Genre: Rock-Pop-Folk [...]

Hello, Blue Roses is the new collaboration between Dan Bejar (of Destroyer , who are releasing a new album of their own in March, as well as Swan Lake and The New Pornographers ) and Sydney Vermont (visual artist, Bonaparte vocalist, former Toronto Children's Choir kid singer). The two came together in Vancouver in 2005, and are set to release their debut album on January 22nd. And if there was nothing else to like about it (that's certainly not the case, there is PLENTY worth listening to on [...]

Photo credit: Joanna Branson With her debut full-length Faces in the Rocks Nevada City songwriter Mariee Sioux has recorded one of this year's most breathtaking and haunting albums. I was lucky enough to witness her spine-chilling performance on a beautiful afternoon in Amsterdam several weeks ago. That afternoon her songs seemed enriched with spiritual tales and Native American imagery. Her songs worked very well with just Mariee Sioux on guitar (see video below). What struck me the most that day was that these songs that sounded so sweet and light-hearted on cd, [...]

MP3: Mariee Sioux - Buried In Teeth MP3: Mariee Sioux - Two Tongues "Faces In the Rocks" has been a tough one to put down to tell the truth and I certainly don't mind. Mariee Sioux has crafted a wondrous, timeless folk masterpiece that is sure to stick deep in your bones. [...]

You know how sometimes you go into gift shops and they have those CD displays that have all the sounds of nature CDs and the display where you can play samples of the songs. Many times there will be an album of Native American music. Don't expect anything like that while listening to Mariee Sioux 's debut album Faces In the Rocks . You will find obvious connections to native American music on Mariee's album, but it's far from hokey. It was recorded in Nevada City with the help of Gentle Thunder [...]

We're back with more Thursday Tunes, - all of them found on bandsites, labelsites, promosites or featured in magazines on the web. Some of them are sent to us by the bands themselves. SONG OF THE WEEK: Juan Pirata and the Tip Tops - My China Palace (from NRK Urört) Super-sunshine-pop from Norway! The man behind this project doesn't spread his name all over [...]

With Radiohead's In Rainbows being the current talk of the music world and all that jazz, let's not forget there were some great new album releases this week. One album in particular that i've been really quick to praise ever since I received an advanced copy a while back is Jens Lekman's Night Falls Over Kortedala . Really solid, but it's kind of been lost in the shuffle as of late with all of these other releases. I also happened to check out Beirut's The Flying [...]
Beirut performed songs from their new album live on KEXP last week photo by Mark Ward Let's hope you still got some funny money in your walllet 'cause it's time to get your freak on: this is one wonderfully weird week of new releases. Even the most anticipated releases by Band of Horses and Beirut, both fantastic sophomore efforts, are not your typical fare of indie rock, with BoH soaring new heights of vocal range and Beirut going more "old country" than "old school." Of course there's the good [...]

It's THURSDAY and here are TWELVE THURSDAY TUNES that we have found somewhere on labelsites, artist's sites, promosites or on web-magazines. From next week, the TWELVE will be out of THURSDAY TUNES, and we will give you whatever we've got, no matter how many we've found. So next weeks column will be called THURSDAY TUNES. Here are this week's tunes: The Wombats - Kill the director ("This is no Bridget Jones". A new classic from The Wombats! from Spinner.com ) The A-sides - Cinematic (I love this song, and [...]

Way back last summer, near the beginnings of this site, we posted some sparse and beautiful demos of songs by a Nevada City song writer named Mariee Sioux. Now almost a year later, Mariee has gone on to tour with Brightblack Morning Light and record a beautiful album of haunting, spiritual songs that frame her strong and bewitching voice in a verdant backdrop of muted strings and somber pipes. Faces In The Rocks still evokes the beautiful images of her lonesome demos but now it would appear that Mariee is not so lonesome, recording the album [...]

Download: MARIEE SIOUX - - "Two Tounges At One Time" There is something in the water in Nevada City, CA. I was told that it was gold and I'm inclined to agree. The city that has been called home by some of the most creative figures in recent history including Allen Ginsberg, Utah Phillips, Jonathan Richman, and Joanna Newsom has been a breeding ground for a new breed of musical genius. The new Nevada City label, Grass Roots Record Company , has collected some of cities brightest for the innagural [...]

Bravitzlana Rubakalva our very own country sounds more like another dimension, a dimension of ascension into pure energy. A place where our beings "dance" in limbo between the physical and the light, and glimpses of truth are gently gazed. Mariee Sioux's guitar works roots down into the earth's crust, leaving her lyrics to play in [...]

Some people create a sound, that music, that once you hear it you know they were made to sing, made to be a free spirit to capture the fancy of everyone their voice falls upon. Mariee Sioux falls into this category. She was on the list for this week and then after a blogroll check today, it seems that I’m not the only one giving her her due ( here and here ). I’ve covered a lot of wonderful ladies the past two weeks and Mariee Sioux sits right up [...]

A woman picks a guitar effortlessly under an orchard tree full with autumn leaves. She is barefoot, beautiful and stares into the clouds; never glancing down at the strings while she plays. She plays to the wind with little care for whomever else might be listening. Her songs aren't sad but there is sorrow in them. Her songs aren't happy but there is joy in them. Sioux's songs creep from the corners of the room and roll down the back of your neck; surprising your senses and giving you a slight chill. She [...]
