My idea is pretty simple. Pick a label, and offer up five songs courtesy of five of their heaviest hitters. It's time to shine a light on the people still willing to venture down the thankless road of helping bands get their songs out and heard. With so much music being recorded at home and thrown blindly into the abyss, it's time to celebrate the Canadian outlets will risk losing their collective shirts to help make some money for bands and offer some stability. It's probably not kosher to talk about in public circles, [...]

Marine Dreams - Roots Come After Lengthy Waits

Tamara Lindeman 's evolution as a song writer is nothing short of staggering. Her first songs were recorded to help her grieve; she learned chords, new instruments and how recording works in almost real-time, needing all to document her most personal thoughts. She was rough around the edges, although truthfully, her songs did their best to hide any of the tell tale signs of inexperience. Bukowski once wrote, "east is past", and it's hard to find a more fitting quote to describe the growth from seemingly unlimited potential of her debut EP to the fully [...]

Okay, so maybe a collection of singles isn't exactly the same thing as a record, but how could this not be something I'd highly recommend anyone who'll listen to me? Tamara Lindeman of The Weather Station has embarked on an open-ended series of two song singles being billed as The Weather Station Duets Series from You’ve Changed Records. Lindeman is collaborating with her favourite fellow songwriters and some very good friends, the first three of which are You've Changed Records' founders Daniel Romano, Baby Eagle (Steve [...]

Went to a nice rocking show at Pressed on August 9, 2012. Playing at the show: Marine Dreams Baby Eagle & The Proud Mothers Nick Ferrio & His Feelings It was the second show that Kelp Records and Pressed are doing in keeping up with the live music scene in Ottawa. The [...]

Trying to determine "the best" album of the year is always going to be an exercise in subjectivity, and well it should be. You can assign points for technical proficiency, and set all kinds of arbitrary criteria as if this was a figure skating competition, but even at the Olympics, they're looking at artistic impression. In my year-end columns, I always stress that I'm very uncomfortable saying my choices are "the best" records of the year, deferring to the old stand-by "favourite albums" tag to define my choices. Being a Polaris Music Prize [...]

Ian Kehoe's singer-songwriter debut is a good effort from top to bottom, even though his voice distractingly resembles The Mountain Goats' John Darnielle. Marine Dreams is the debut album from former Attack in Black bassist Ian Kehoe. Not that I had ever heard of Attack in Black, but they put out a couple of albums in their native Canada in the mid-to-late '00s before moving on to other things. Kehoe wrote and sang all the songs on this debut, but a dozen different people take on the instrumental duties. This rotating lineup leads to noticeable sonic variations from...

Welcome to FWBA's best-of 2011. This has been such a meaningful year in music to me that it's tough to represent in one post. I'm going to be honest, this took me quite a long time. I wanted to do this year justice because personally, it was a total dream: living in San Diego working with some of my favorite artists, going to SXSW and Lollapalooza, seeing Dave Bazan in stranger's living rooms, Feist play a hometown show, saw tune-yards electrified show at Soda Bar clocking in as one of my favorite performances, watching Zach Rogue and my boyfriend playing [...]

When Handsome Furs' Dan Boeckner sang "A thousand lonely kids making noise in the basement" on Sound Kapital , he was talking about all the angst-ridden musicians he encountered in his travels from Bucharest to Beijing, but he could just as easily been talking about my email inbox in 2011. Every day brought a new batch of fresh-from-the-studio records, singles and EPs by even fresher musicians looking for their place in the world. It's been a fascinating year for new music, for sure. When it came time to whittle down the list of my favourite discs [...]

Marine Dreams is the solo moniker of Attack in Black 's Ian Kehoe. Just yesterday (November 15), he released his self-titled LP through You've Changed Records . Go to Exclaim! to read more about it. The drums on album cut "Fold the Sky" sound like they're being playing by a real drummer, but the verse beat is so hypnotically repetitive that it could easily be replaced with an electronic beat. The arrangement loosens up as it goes along, and the result is a scrappy power pop song with [...]

Attack in Black appears to have ceased to be a going concern, at least for now, but that’s certainly not due to a lack of productivity on the part of its scattered membership. Daniel Romano has pumped out two solo albums and a fine little folk record with Daniel, Fred and Julie, Spencer Burton just got Grey Kingdom up and running and now bassist Ian Kehoe – newly decamped from his hometown of Welland to Sackville – has stepped to the fore with a smashing slab of bright, brainy guitar-pop under the moniker Marine Dreams.
