Trying to determine "the best" album of the year is always going to be an exercise in subjectivity, and well it should be. You can assign points for technical proficiency, and set all kinds of arbitrary criteria as if this was a figure skating competition, but even at the Olympics, they're looking at artistic impression. In my year-end columns, I always stress that I'm very uncomfortable saying my choices are "the best" records of the year, deferring to the old stand-by "favourite albums" tag to define my choices. Being a Polaris Music Prize [...]

Ian Kehoe's singer-songwriter debut is a good effort from top to bottom, even though his voice distractingly resembles The Mountain Goats' John Darnielle. Marine Dreams is the debut album from former Attack in Black bassist Ian Kehoe. Not that I had ever heard of Attack in Black, but they put out a couple of albums in their native Canada in the mid-to-late '00s before moving on to other things. Kehoe wrote and sang all the songs on this debut, but a dozen different people take on the instrumental duties. This rotating lineup leads to noticeable sonic variations from...

Marine Dreams is the latest project from former Attack In Black bassist Ian Kehoe. He's just released a new video for the track "Sudden Dark Truths" from the band's self-titled debut album. Watch the video, shot using a technique that creates a pseudo-3D effect, here:

Welcome to FWBA's best-of 2011. This has been such a meaningful year in music to me that it's tough to represent in one post. I'm going to be honest, this took me quite a long time. I wanted to do this year justice because personally, it was a total dream: living in San Diego working with some of my favorite artists, going to SXSW and Lollapalooza, seeing Dave Bazan in stranger's living rooms, Feist play a hometown show, saw tune-yards electrified show at Soda Bar clocking in as one of my favorite performances, watching Zach Rogue and my boyfriend playing [...]

When Handsome Furs' Dan Boeckner sang "A thousand lonely kids making noise in the basement" on Sound Kapital , he was talking about all the angst-ridden musicians he encountered in his travels from Bucharest to Beijing, but he could just as easily been talking about my email inbox in 2011. Every day brought a new batch of fresh-from-the-studio records, singles and EPs by even fresher musicians looking for their place in the world. It's been a fascinating year for new music, for sure. When it came time to whittle down the list of my favourite discs [...]

Marine Dreams is the solo moniker of Attack in Black 's Ian Kehoe. Just yesterday (November 15), he released his self-titled LP through You've Changed Records . Go to Exclaim! to read more about it. The drums on album cut "Fold the Sky" sound like they're being playing by a real drummer, but the verse beat is so hypnotically repetitive that it could easily be replaced with an electronic beat. The arrangement loosens up as it goes along, and the result is a scrappy power pop song with [...]

Attack in Black appears to have ceased to be a going concern, at least for now, but that's certainly not due to a lack of productivity on the part of its scattered membership. Daniel Romano has pumped out two solo albums and a fine little folk record with Daniel, Fred and Julie, Spencer Burton just got Grey Kingdom up and running and now bassist Ian Kehoe – newly decamped from his hometown of Welland to Sackville – has stepped to the fore with a smashing slab of bright, brainy guitar-pop under the moniker Marine Dreams. [...]

by teepoo Here's another one from Marine Dreams to remind you guys that their album will be out on November 15th . I still love their instrumental interludes so much. Marine Dreams- We'll Get Her Back In Your Arms FacebooK

Marine Dreams is the shit. I've just spent the better part of an hour going through my email's inbox, sampling and rejecting gigabytes-worth of limp, uninspired, trite music that it's creators are "really, really excited about!" but can't hold a candle to Ian Kehoe's Marine Dreams solo project's self-titled debut. Sure, the Attack In Black bassist has a track record of making great records that these other upstarts don't, but if time in the business were all it takes to make great records, we wouldn't have spent last week deriding Nickelback [...]

by teepoo Marine Dreams is fronted by former Attack in Black bassist Ian Kehoe and has contributions from former members. On November 15th they will release their self-titled debut. Fold the Sky is a charming sample from the album which provides a perfect example of the kind of bubblegum pop-rock songs that will be found on the rest of the album. However my favourite part of this isn't the pleasant melodies but the strange distorted instrumental thing in the middle. So randomly wonderful. [...]

Ian Kehoe describes Marine Dreams ' self-titled debut album as "a record of modern pop songs," but adds, "How is this possible? Even Marine Dreams cannot be sure." Cryptic, yes, but also wholly accurate. I'll hold off on giving you a whole album review until we're closer to the disc's release date, and instead draw your attention the the record's first single, "Fold the Sky". Pop songs, by nature, are designed to spark recognition (maybe even nostalgia) through their verse-chorus-verse-hook-chorus -fade out structure. Kehoe, on the other hand, creates a new architectural pop song, [...]

With all the reverbed drenched, sun-kissed "jams" and grainy, youtube clip videos floating around the interwebs, you can't read a review that doesn't force teenage love down your throat. We get it; Beach Boys pop songs are ear pleasing and remind us how great it felt to find your Summer crush, but just because a band prefers muddled, surfy melodies doesn't make every song a return to the Blue fucking Lagoon. Personally, I don't want to revisit the awkward years of adolescences and even though it's become increasingly less cool, the thing I pine [...]
