Springtime is here, so peel off that jacket and put on a slightly lighter jacket. I went traveling a few weeks ago across the ocean, and I spent a lot of it waiting. All the flights, train rides, and everything else that goes with travel. I didn't mind it. Our society is one that drives for us always to busy and productive, and while sitting in a train station with headphones in might not seem like a holiday to most – it does to me. Here's some things that were in my ears while I waited [...]

![The Mariner’s Children // In My Bed [Single]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4837776_lg.jpg)
"In My Bed" is an epic folk track of sorts, packed with energy that spins around dark subject matter and orchestrated chaos. It feels like a train going off the rails, driving through melodies without regard and just a touch of panic near the end. I like this song a lot, people. It grabs gypsy folk, drags it into a studio, and matches it up with impressive production - in the end there is this fantastic stomping anthem. This song is from The Mariner's Children's Sycamore EP, with a full length slated for later this year - we [...]

I may have paid attention at 'has played support to Lucy Rose, King Charles & Kyla La Grange'. This is Hot Feet , 'Under October'. And it may have taken me a minute to get into; as soon as it breaks into something fuller, richer I'm a little bit sold. With early Marling-esque mixed with Mariner's Children vibes, Hot Feet (I LOVE that name by the way) promise to be bigger live and probably something we should all be listening to in these cooler (or wetter) Autumnal days in London. It'll warm your feet and leave you feeling [...]

I popped down for a small chat in Angel, North East London with Ben and Dan from the 7 piece alt-folk amazement that is The Mariner's Children a few days ago. With their recent success of the release of their beautiful, angry and haunting EP, New Moore Island on Broken Sound I decided to get to know Mariner's Children a little better. They have of course been on a few Communion bills with some fellow talented artists such as Johnny Flynn, Marcus Foster, Emmy the Great, Peggy Sue, Fanfarlo, Cherbourg, King Charles, Kurran and [...]

Whether it’s the frenetic, orchestral romp that peaks in the middle or the self-titled instrumental that comes next, New Moore Island displays an exquisite execution for each of its near-19 minutes of playing time. The only downside to this debut for The Mariner’s Children is that it sets an impossibly high level of expectations of any future endeavors. Then again, that’s like describing your weaknesses in a job interview as, “Sometimes I work too hard.” Given its first few strums and snare hits, New Moore Island didn’t seem like it was headed [...]

Regular readers of The Blue Walrus will be aware that I run an independent record label called Dustbowl Records , and I thought it was about time I gave a little update on all things Dustbowl, as what I'm up to with that links quite nicely with some of the music I've been writing about here recently... This week we hosted The Mariner's Children and Tristram at The Bicycle Shop in Norwich, and it was amazing. It was a sell out gig and a very sweaty one at that; much fun was had [...]

Norwich appears to be developing a folk scene. Well, depending on what you call folk of course. Under the new reign of "folk" kings Mumford & Sons, it seems appropriate to point out that the ever-expanding genre really does seem to encompass anything with both an acoustic guitar and an even slightly twee vibe these days. So, working on that criteria, my native city appears to be giving birth to some folk-oriented homegrown talent - you might remember Alloy Ark and Takeda from previous posts by both Tim and I, and even The Mariner's Children [...]

There's something oddly timeless about The Mariner's Children's approach to making music. It's like the past 30 years of British music never happened. They've avoided the pitfalls of guitar based indie, and just made their sound developing OLD music. The video for the track 'It Carved Your Name Into The Ground' belies this. This track is taken from their forthcoming EP New Moore Island , which is out on 1st November via Broken Records. Click here to view the embedded video. Related posts [...]

I really like it when people are enthusiastic about music. This EP was sent through to me by a PR friend of mine so excited that he didn't put anything in the email beyond a download link and a single line: "This is good, promise" . It made me laugh, and he was right. The Mariner's Children are releasing on the same label as Rachel Dadd, who I first saw sharing a stage with Rozi Plain something like three or four Homegames ago. Their music is basically folk-pop, [...]

MP3: The Mariner’s Children - It Carved Your Name Into The Ground The Mariner’s Children have been sizzling in the brain pan of any half-decent muso for the best part of the last year, and the band finally release their flawless debut EP ‘New Moore Island’ this autumn. Benefitting from a lineup that consists of the crème-de-la-crème of the UK’s modern folk scene, the sound of The Mariner’s Children is defined by intelligent musicianship, thought-provoking lyrics and roaring vocal harmonies from the exceptionally talented seven-piece. This collection of truly striking songs will attract the respect of [...]

The Mariner’s Children are a 7 piece alt-folk band who’ve been a long time in the making. Sounding like the bastard love child of the Arcade Fire and Iron and Wine, there's also a hint of Bonnie "Prince" Billy impishness. The band have finished recording their debut EP New More Island , which is set for release on 1st November via Broken Sound. Track Listing 1) Coal 2) Golden Pine 3) It Carved Your Name Into The Ground 4) New Moore Island (Interlude) 5) Drunken Heart You [...]

We featured The Mariner's Children as a Band To Watch last week, and because I'm finding myself rather obsessed with them at present, I wanted to share a video from the Willkommen Collective's Foxtrot event last Sunday. Here is 'Coal', my favourite Mariner's track, recorded by the wonderful SeeGigFilmGigPost YouTube channel . IFRAME Embed for Youtube

I am actually in love with this band. My friend Chris who runs Broken Sound Music (the label who will incidentally be releasing Mariner's debut EP on November 1st) was really enthusiastic about these guys, and when I saw them live for the first time supporting TBW favourite Rachael Dadd at the weekend, I was absolutely gobsmacked. For once, I do believe Chris wasn't enthusiastic enough! This seven-piece foot-stomping folk orchestra are truly unlike anything else around at the moment; think something in the vein of an underground version of Mumford & Sons [...]

There's a purity about Rachael Dadd that makes me go all warm and fuzzy. Give me this little lady with a banjo any day and I'll be a happy, sincerely happy, muso. Her latest release, the gorgeous 'Elephee' EP, is astounding. This set of raw yet beautiful recordings captures Rachael at her charming best, and it's perfect Sunday afternoon listening. Five tracks of brilliant lo-fi goodness and I can say in all honesty there is nothing bad to say about the EP; hats off to the amazing Broken Sound Music, who seem to be guiding Rachael [...]

November I've always thought was kind of okay. It's the start of the chilly season, so short days, wrapping up warm and eating big hearty meals by the fire in my fictional country home that lives in my mind, seems all cosy and romantic. Come February you'll find I have a rather different attitude to the colder season, which is generally one of 'FUCK THE FUCK OFF!'. But for now, get a woolly jumper on, drink some warm cider and make the most of the insane amount of live music going on right now. Last week (as [...]
