Filter magazine's Culture Collide festival kicked off in earnest Thursday night in Echo Park, offering a sampler platter of international flavors that — musically, anyway — tasted generally pretty familiar. To that end, we offer something we'll call Random Encounters of the Festival Kind: Highlight of the night "I never thought L.A. wasn't big enough to have a 2-piece," joked Blood Red Shoes drummer Steven Ansell. The U.K. duo, which also consists of hard-rocking guitar-sprite Laura-Mary Carter, played so hard the power went out in the Champagne Room at [...]
Marit Larsen "What If" Marit Larsen is one of the great sweethearts of modern pop; a singer-songwriter who can't help but make even the darkest emotions sound like something out of a wholesome romance story. "What If" is a love song, but its sentiment is poisoned by her character's intense insecurity. She frets about ruining this great love, openly singing "There's no way around it / you're too good for me." Larsen's song plays up a slightly devious tone on the verses, suggesting that maybe she is truly coming from a place of genuine damage, but [...]
There are still $20 wristbands available for the 3rd Annual Culture Collide Festival in Los Angeles!

With Austin’s annual South By Southwest (SXSW) Music Festival just around the corner, we thought we would help you streamline your hectic concert-going schedule by selecting our 11 must-see acts. The event transforms Texas into a week-long mecca for indie bands and alt-rockers, but there is no shortage of expert pop practitioners in the bumper lineup. From enigmatic '90s singer-songwriter Fiona Apple to the groove-smothered, synthy hip-hop leanings of Penguin Prison, there is something for everyone this year. Make sure you drop by our second annual Pray For Pop party on March 14, where a number of these not-to-be-missed [...]
Since the various laundry lists of bands that had been accepted for this year's SXSW had been announced, I bided my time. I wanted to wait for the official venue announcements, carefully poring over what had been released through the 2012 SXSW Web site while also considering smaller, nonofficial events that bands have been posting on their Facebooks or official Web sites. The headliners have been briefly profiled in part 1 of my SXSW 2012 preview. As you can imagine, there are so many bands playing at [...]

It seems like lifetimes ago when I first heard Teitur guested on Radcliffe and Maconie's show, then on Radio2, for an evening session in February 2009 ( photo here ). He did amazing live versions of ‘The Singer’ (still my favourite song of his to date; it slays me every time) and ‘Catherine the Waitress’ that left me spellbound. The man from the enchanting-sounding Faroe Islands has played Vienna’s Jammin’ Java coffee shop a couple of times over the years and has built up a loyal following in this Virginia suburb of [...]
A new video from Norwegian artist Marit Larsen , this is the video for "Coming home" .
We cauht up with all female Norwegian 4-piece Katzenjammer to discuss TV obsessions, gigs in the North Pole and Genesis covers. Here is how it went: Cougar Microbes: What time did you wake up today? Was it out of choice or necessity? Katzenjammer : I got up at 4 am today and it was NOT out of [...]

And so, another year marches to a close - another fantastic, adventure-filled, technicolor year. It's the time when all of us start kicking around our neatly-bulleted lists of bests and worsts. For me, the more I read these lists, the more I feel that I missed more albums and artists than I heard this year. The stats are staggering: in 2002, about 33,000 albums were released. In 2006 that number was 75,000. Last year close to 100,000 albums were released, with only roughly 800 of those albums selling more than 5K. It's tough out [...]
Matthew Dear @ #offline Brooklyn Bowl 10/23/2010 Honey / Monkey / Soil To Seed / ? / Slowdance / You Put A Smell On Me / Tide / Little People (Black City) Matthew Dear "Little People (Black City)" This was a strange show. I wasn't sure what to expect of Matthew Dear's live performance - I half-suspected it would be a guy-with-computer-and-sequence rs deal, but as it turns out, he augments that setup with live drums, bass, trumpet, keyboards, and guitar. Dear and his band are dapper pros, [...]

I am sitting at a gas station truckstop somewhere off Highway 70 cutting across the center of this great, flat land, poaching some free wireless. I've been on the road for over a week for work, getting real familiar-like with all that Missouri (and Kansas) have to offer. I've had a tremendous time doing things like watching a Royals ballgame Wednesday (with fountains and waterfalls!) and a Cardinals game tonight in St. Louis, drinking a whole heck of a lot of Boulevard Brewery 's limited edition beers while brushing up on my Saved By The Bell trivia with some [...]

I will hardly reveal myself as the music blogosphere’s slightly less ugly version of Dr Phil when I observe that people recover from the end of serious relationships in very different ways. In this series of songs about love we have looked at various themes, including splitting up. Here we look at how protagonists in ten songs have bounced back, or not, from the death of a liaison. * * * Skeeter Davis – Gonna Get Along Without You Now (1964).mp3 [...]

Rieccolo nuovamente, in tutta la sua infinita dolcezza. Jonathan Vandebroeck , in arte Milow , torna a farsi sentire.

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , New Music , Exclusive Though she's not yet a household name in the States, Marit Larsen has already had a successful four-year run as a solo artist in Europe. The 26-year-old indie-pop singer is, in fact, a bit of a pop star in her homeland of Norway, as well as Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Larsen, now testing American waters, stopped by Spinner's New York headquarters to play a few tunes and give the staff a taste of what's to come. [...]

It's been a while back since we heard from Marit Larsen . One of her recent hits as a solo artist was "If A Song Could Get Me To You." I have to admit, Steal My Heart pales a little bit in comparison to that chart topper but still has that animated pop we oh-so-love. This track is part of her album, The Chase :: Marit Larsen - Steal My Heart

folk-pop // acoustic Some of you might be familiar with Marit Larsen as a former member of Norwegian teenage duo M2M, known for their hit "Don't Say You Love Me" (1999). Following the duo's break up Marit has shifted from the sugary sweet pop to a subtler and more mature kind of songwriting. Her second solo effort, The Chase (2008), is all about the rich yet unpretentious arrangements and memorable melodies. Featured below, "Steal My Heart" is one of Marit's slow paced numbers and a great example of her orchestral [...]
Check out new Jive Records' newest buzz act Marit Larsen who is already a huge star overseas with millions of views on YouTube. Hailing from Norway, Larsen's music is riddled with sweet melodies, memorable piano hooks and confession-filled lyrics. She's a bit like the Norwegian version of Colbie Caillat or Feist. Watch the the video for "If A Song Could Get Me You." It's a little folky, a little quirky, super sweet and it may bring a smile to your face this morning.
