With the horizon of a new year seemingly inches away, we're proud to present our best songs of 2011. We have been slaving over albums and hidden tracks for the past month, but now the beginning of our five-part list of the best of the best. 100. Maritime - Paraphernalia The charmer of Human Hearts held the ethereal appeal from a group we come back to with each new record. The group signed with Dangerbird this year and we only see bright things in their future. [...]

When 2011 is said and done, there can only be one that surpasses all others. While there were 3 records that were rated perfectly this year and 2 that were as close to perfect as anyone could get, the process involved in picking the best of 2011 was as pleasurable as it was difficult. I want to personally congratulate the artists mentioned here today and thank you for your tremendous talent and dedication to your craft- You guys are the best of the best and it was pleasure talking about all of you. And you, reading at home or where-the-fuck-ever, [...]

Almost six years to the day, Milwaukee's emo pop pioneers The Promise Ring played a one-off reunion show at the Flower 15 Festival at Chicago's The Metro. Now, 10 years since the their initial disbandment, the band has announced a return to the venue as part of a two date (upgrade!) "test" jaunt in February 2012, reports The A.V. Club . The first show will be on the 24th in their home town's Turner Hall, with The Metro show occurring the following day. Tickets go on sale November 25th, aka Black Friday. Drummer Dan Didier [...]

Maritime - "It's Casual" (from 20112s Human Hearts ) One of the problems with being in a successful band is that once that band breaks up, you'll forever have to answer the question, "When will the reunion happen?" Davey von Bohlen (singer/guitarist) and Dan Didier (drummer) have been asked that question probably hundreds of times since 2002 when the band that they made up half of - The Promise Ring - called it quits. Earlier this year, Didier mentioned that a reunion isn't out of the question and [...]

After a four-year musical hiatus, Maritime released its latest full-length, Human Hearts , via Dangerbird Records earlier this year. Human Hearts is a feel-good anthem of indie rock and right at home on Dangerbird, whose other artists include other big names such as Silversun Pickups and Minus The Bear. Driven by percussive runs and upbeat electric guitar, Human Hearts focuses little on lyrical complexity. Instead, it is clear that the members wanted to produce a straightforward rock record that would establish the groundwork for a fun live show. The new release sparked an influx of tour dates and reviews for Maritime, [...]

Today's cover is the bittersweet, indie-disco fused Boy From School by Hot Chip. Dispensing with the electronics however are four indie covers; 3 acoustic renditions by Grizzly Bear , British India and Portastatic and 1 slightly more rocking number from Maritime (which oddly enough ends in an acoustic fashion). Grizzly Bear - And I Was A Boy From School British India - And [...]

This past weekend, the always quality pop culture arm of the immensely popular Onion , The A.V. Club brought their expertise into the real world with the first annual A.V. Fest in Chicago, Ill. Hosted by the legendary Hideout, A.V. Fest was a time of hearty pop culture reflection, with a smattering of under-the-radar or nearly forgotten acts. Not to take away, most every band on the bill was necessary, and gave further insight into The A.V. Club and what the editors value as far as art is concerned. [...]

I sing in the shower. Probably more than most. I've probably got a repetoire long enough to do a live set of covers for a small but enthusiastic audience; albiet naked, red, and wet. I'm also quite a music snob when it comes to my shower singing Madison Square Garden show supported by Creedance Clearwater [...]

The Promise Ring drummer Dan Didier, during a recent interview with Punknews regarding his other band Maritime, hinted at the possibility of a TPR reunion tour.

In the second round of our MOR New Tunes playlist, we bring 15 of the latest and greatest tunes from the world of rock and roll. New Tunes Volume 2 has a little bit of everything with jams from some up and coming bands, indie rock mainstays, and even a few new tunes from classic rock favorites.

Something I just couldn't get on board with during SXSW was getting up early. I was staying in a room with six other people and every single morning I would wake up and everyone would be gone by 11AM. Screw that! I stayed up until fucking 3AM! I need some God damn energy for the next day or else I'm dragging ass for rest of the day. Especially in this Texas heat. So I woke up at the crack of noon and made my way to devour some Waffle Tacos. It exactly [...]

This week we have a little Americana, a little slow-core, a bit of indie pop and a lot of twee. This is one of the better groups I've been privy to review in a long time, so lets get to it... Alela Diane: Alela Diane & Wild Divine - From the first moment I heard Alela Diane 's 2nd record, To Be Still , I knew she was someone to keep an eye on. To Be Still was [...]

The Promise Ring was the first emo band I found myself obsessed with. I had recently graduated college and was still clinging to the last of the grunge bands while I swam around in the rap-rock infested radio waters. The future of rock seemed rather bleak, until I listened to Very Emergency. It was like wandering around in a darkened room and someone suddenly turned on the lights. Was this
