I don't buy very many complete albums anymore. I used to buy albums all the time for one or two songs, and end up with serious buyer's remorse, a million CDs I didn't want anymore, and empty pockets, and I was reluctant to purchase bands I had read about but not heard. With the rise of iTunes (and before it, Napster and KaZaa), I was able to find what I wanted without the filler. Much of the music found on my best of 2006 list came from my wonderful fellow bloggers who introduced me to music that [...]
It's a bit early this year, but I wanted to get started on my end of the year music lists so that I wouldn't obsess and ruminate over them endlessly and wind up posting them in January when 1) it will be impossible not to be influenced at least somewhat by everyone else's lists and 2) all of you will be so sick of year-end lists anyway. Also, December gets quite busy for me very soon - between work, life, and having a baby due next month, there won't be a whole lot of free time left for making these [...]

So, is Maritime more than just the ex-Cap'n Jazz/ex-Promise Ring, ex-Dismemberment Plan band? Sure, Davey von Bohlen, Dan Didier and Eric Axelson were on the verge of breaking through the big city music machine on the first wave of emo, when emo was cool... (was emo ever really cool?) If you recall, The Dismemberment Plan even signed to Interscope Records, but their record was never released by that label. The Promise Ring made their last record for Anti Records, and despite their jump from Jade Tree, never made it to that MTV show with Carson Daly. Maritime does not pick up where the [...]

Saturday night, I went to Mercury Lounge to see Bound Stems, but ended up sticking around to see the band Maritime after them (basically because everyone I ran into that I knew kept saying "Are you going to stay to see Maritime? Maritime are so great!" etc. etc). And I have to tell you, I'm glad that I did, because Maritime pretty much WERE so great. Their music is basically synthy pop that is just NICE to listen to. For a very Nora-esque example: I could put their album ( We, The Vehicles [...]

Lots of good shows coming through Phoenix this week and the coming weeks. A quick rundown for this week: Monday brings us Rogue Wave with Jason Collett and Foreign Born at Martini Ranch in Scottsdale. (Visit Rogue Wave's Web site to see how you can donate to help drummer Pat Spurgeon, who needs a kidney transplant.) Ratatat also plays Monday at Rhythm Room. I work on Monday. Boo. Tuesday, Maritime is playing Rhythm Room with [...]
Today is the 1st of September, and at the time of this writing, there are four months left in 2006 -- a full quarter of the year remaining. For the music industry, it's typically the year’s most exciting stretch as labels roll out big releases just in time for the holiday season. For the discerning listener, however (and this is where you and I come in), the year's just about over. The premature release of Joanna Newsom's Ys this week signaled the end of the pregnant potential of 2006; aside from a few scattered [...]

Maritime - Parade of Punk Rock T-shirts Maritime - Calm My friend told me about Maritime a bit yesterday. I don't know what type of music this is. Some subcatergory of pop, I guess. Maybe a little like The Go Find and a teeny bit of Bloc Party in some places. Whatever, it's good stuff! First song is really nice. Official Site (Which is very pretty.) Listen to more songs there. [...]
Well, we made it through the first week. It's about time for my first mix, don't you think? This mix is for my friends that are reading this. A lot of this stuff has been around for awhile, but most of it is new to you. Right click on the song titles to save. Click on the artist name for more information. Enjoy! Art Brut - Good Weekend Maritime - Tearing Up The Oxygen Peter, Bjorn [...]

Maritime comes from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They just released a 2nd album We, The Vehicles , which has lately being playing on my mp3 player quite a lot! The reason is that their songs are simple; plain and straightforward. The recipe is drop dead easy: one slightly-raspy vocal + one acoustic guitar = a soothing, comfortable song. The guitar isn’t overly complex or distracting, and the voice complements this stripped down sound well. + Maritime - Tearing Up The Oxygen + Maritime - Calm + Maritime - [...]

______________________________ Maritime A banda lançou recentemente seu segundo álbum "We, the Vehicles", e ouvindo algumas canções dele, resolvi baixá-lo por inteiro, e não me arrependi. Para quem não sabe, Maritime se formou com o [...]

The brilliant and talented people behind the "It's The Juggernaut, Bitch!" video have released the long-awaited two-part sequel: "J2: Juggment Day." Several thousand people have already watched them, and you can be the next: Part 1 and Part 2 . Part 1's pretty great, though neither lives up to the epic original . Speaking of sophomore efforts, you can hear a few tracks from the amazing new Chad VanGaalen album Skelliconnection over on Obscure Sound . Kicks the shit out of the Thom Yorke record. Here's an [...]
April was easily the best month of the year so far musically, at least for me. I fell in love with the new Fiery Furnaces album, Maritime's We, The Vehicles finally had its U.S. release, and after six long years, one of my favorite musicians in the world released a new record. As always, I suggest you buy these direct from the labels, though you can purchase them from an online retailer or your local record store . The Fiery [...]
We would like to introduce you to Maritime . When we kicked back, threw on the headphones, and listened to this artist we thought "American pop hand delivered in small dirty test-tube" What did you think?
