In 1999, Robot Mark slipped me a disc that vastly improved my December. We went to college in Maine, see, and winter there is by turns depressing and gorgeous. Then there's the fact that, when you're in college, and you're in the middle of finals and looking forward to going home for break, things get a little strange. You're excited and miserable. The excitement and misery of The Promise Ring's Very Emergency, which I probably listened to everyday that December, found me at just the right time. After Very Emergency, the Promise Ring put out an EP, then one more...

If you haven't had the chance to pick up the Annuals debut LP Be He Me , then that's your assignment over this holiday weekend. It should definitely be apart of your collection. Actually while you're at it, go ahead and grab the Frelen Mas EP with it. Sometimes a collection of b-sides doesn't stand par to the original album, but that's not the case with Frelen Mas . I did notice that these songs were the slightest bit toned down compared to the LP though. FM does have [...]

The Word: "weekend," as in "Have a nice one." (That's kind of what the album cover's saying to me.) Maritime - The more I hear these Milwaukee guys, the more I love 'em. Wish I could do them justice logo-wise, but I feel what I hear. Some people have a way with words and others. . .not have way.Be Unhappy mp3For Science Fiction mp3 - I know, I already posted it, but it's one of my faves of the

I've had this great Maritime record since early August, a fact that thrilled me to no end when I stumbled upon it. But I listened to the first two free downloads ("Guns of Navarone" and "For Science Fiction") and I was fairly nonplussed with the result. Sure, it sounded good, but I just couldn't wrap my heart around it as easily as I wanted to. There was no "Tearing up the Oxygen" instant-anthem on the first half-listen. I gave the record's surprising closer "Love Has Given Up" 4 stars and I tucked it away, awaiting the release date [...]

"You are going to have to lie to me..." Ahh, the flavor of the week. I usually don't like post bands that have already had an excess of spins around the circuit, but I make exceptions for my most near and dear. Anyway, my Davey von Bohlen loyalties date back to the Promise Ring, so Maritime gets an extra slice of the pie. The band's new disc, Heresy and the Hotel Choir just hit stores on Tuesday. It's great...as was [...]

"What the hell? Was that J.D. Drew hitting a grand slam?!?!" Those were words uttering from my mouth at the first inning the other night during Game 6 of the Red Sox vs Indians series. I guess it is true that they are at their best when they're at Fenway. In fact, this series was full of unexpected moments. With Manny getting Lofton out on second, Pedroia (Rookie of the Year anyone?) hitting that home run, Drew's grand slam, Lugo's double, even Gagne ended an inning without screwing up. And thank you Mr. Francona for putting Ellsbury in [...]

After last week, it seems like there couldn't be anything left to release. However, this week doesn't disappoint and gives us some quality music. My emphatic pick for this week is Underworld 's Oblivion with Bells. It's not often that I get to write about one of my favorite artists of all time. Underworld has been a favorite of mine since I first heard Second Toughest In The Infants and they only grew on me as time went on. [...]

As promised earlier this week; here's another recently recorded track by Danish trio Us With Millions . I'll stop comparing the band to that ONE particular band, as this new song clearly proves that these guys are fully capable and ready to make a name of their own. The quiet opening part aside, Do You Blush? follows nicely in the footstep of the band's previous works, which probably is the best recommendation I can give! Finally; big thank you to the boys for letting me post this as an exclusive download. + [...]

How is it, I wonder to myself, that I had never actually listened to a song by the band Maritime until just a few weeks ago? It doesn't really make much sense to me, especially as former Dismemberment Plan bassist Eric Axelrod was once (but is no longer) a part of the band. Ah well, let me just say that after a few weeks of digesting Maritime's new record "Heresy and the Hotel Choir," I'm ready to check out the band's other records. Actually, maybe just "We, the Vehicles," as their first album "Glass Floor" is reportedly not very good. [...]

Never in my life would I have thought I'd be giving the time of day to anything described as being "psychedelic" and from "San Fransisco". San Fransisco punk and hardcore have been staples of my musical diet for years but I abandoned the hippie -dippy, make-the-world-safe-for-freaks , 1960's SF stuff long ago. Partly, I think, this is because I'm generally pretty disgusted with baby-boomer culture and its self-absorption. If you were alive in the 1980's and were witness to the unending news stories about baby-boomers, who were into their thirties by then, and their "what does it all [...]
Kinda slim pickings this week after a little over a month's worth of consistently great weeks of album releases. I guess we can just sit back and catch our bearings with this week's edition of The Daily Graboid. Not really anything here that I would instantly want, but there could possibly be a few interesting albums here. Starting off with R.E.M.'s first ever live album, Maritime (former members of The Promise Ring and The Dismemberment Plan ) and their new album Heresy & the Hotel Choir , former [...]
