This year's IDOW may not be chock-o-block full of huge acts, but the consistent quality the "lil festival that could" has assembled in pretty remarkable. Reaching from coast-to-coast, IDOW procured some national acts that are about to explode (New Country Rehab, Olenka & the Autumn Lovers) and some mainstays from the Canadian scene that continue to impress. One of those names is Mark Berube . For years now, Berube and his band - The Patriotic Few - have been denizens, traversing the world for inspiration. [...]

The Ack's post yesterday on Olenka & The Autumn Lovers reminded me that we've been tardy in getting a post up for this year's In The Dead of Winter festival. This year's edition takes place from January 26-29th this year, and they recently announced the lineup (with a couple additions to come), which is once again chock-full of talent: Jenn Grant Brandi Disterheft Mary Gauthier [...]

If hypem.com is any indication , there aren't many passengers riding with us on the Mark Berube express. I'm not 100% sure why the talented nomad toils in obscurity. I've seen him bring a room of media folk to tears in an intimate 15-minute set and heard him bounce a room of hundreds between appreciative silence and foot stomping exuberance. His voice is powerful and the way he fuses timeless instrumentation with progression spoken word and indie-folk anthems should be enough to get him hours of radio time on CBC3, but for some reason he's always [...]

Thursday was a chock-o-block full kind of day at M for Montreal. Starting with an afternoon schmooze session filled with managers/agents/promoters and more business cards than the free lunch bowl at any TGIFridays and shows going until the early morning, delegates were on the go. That being said, Friday was just as busy. A few panels started the day - which I sadly had to miss to keep my day job rolling - but the afternoon church show/book launch was a perfect start for my Friday. Mark Berube & The Few - Mark's [...]

One of the acts I'm most looking forward to seeing next week at M for Montreal is the nomadic Mark Berube - he's playing the M for Martini showcase on Thursday . He may call Montreal home, but he's traveled the world singing songs, and stock piling anecdotes and observations. The result is a unique sound built on his spoken word background, accordion and piano prowess and finely tuned travelers eye that are blended together into driving, indie-folk anthems and theatrical live sets filled with surprises and smiles. Whether it's opening with a heartfelt [...]

So the full line up and schedule for the Calgary Folk Fest hit the public this past week, and wow I am pretty excited about the late July event. For me the city has two premier festivals each year and they are the previously mentioned Sled Island Festival (see here for my post) and then followed up a mere month later is the Calgary Folk Fest. Let's look into the event shall we? So I am always torn when it comes to "festivals" as I always want a more intimate and personal connection with great and favourite artists, [...]

So I haven't done a "New on the 'Nets" post in a while, but I did post some recommendations on Thursday already...so, this may be a condensed version. So in order to fill out the post, a Saturday Playlist is in order!! Couple of items that I need to recommend: Daytrotter posted their J. Tillman session from SXSW . Very Nice - go sign up and pick up the 4 tracks! Laundromatinee has their Great Lake Swimmers session posted as well. Hit them up for some of the video [...]
In August of 2009, Dan Mangan will release his sophomore album, Nice, Nice, Very Nice. And it's about time. After three and a half years of touring his sleeper-hit, Postcards and Daydreaming, Dan is ready and eager to unveil a collection of lyrical ruminations that showcase his growth as a songwriter. It's always a matter of time... sometimes late, sometimes early. So with Dan Mangan's second full length, you may think that i'm really in advance spreading the word. In fact, once again i'm late writing those couple lines about this awesome [...]
Here we are with more great lists, lists of great music and from great friends. The good folks over at You Crazy Dreamers (of which I blog for as well - check us out!!) have provided a list of some solid music from the last year. The list while put together from Olivier, with input from the team that includes Laura, Martin, Trini and myself. Despite the fact that we span 4 countries and 2 continents, we still connect on a regular basis if for nothing else then the sharing of great music. But [...]
Some of you already know my addiction for Vancouver Mark Berube's rich universe. With The Patriotic Few his regular band or with the awesome Fugitives - I can't imagine loving such a music -, Mark Berube is a captivating composer and songwriter. His talent is growing release after release. At least, I should say his capacity to deliver each time a unique melody (blend of folk-chamber-soul-pop ) which is a perfect illustration of the stories told, is getting closer and closer to the masterpiece... Well, dealing with art and passion, I should simply say that my [...]

Mark Berube, an indie musician who performs folk-inflected indie with his group, Mark Berube and the Patriotic Few, discusses his perspective on music and politics. This is the third in a series of interviews with musicians discussing political perspectives. What role do politics play in your music? Politics in modern music can very easily have the tendency to be preachy. I avoid this sort of statement as much as I can, unless I really want to put some balls behind something. I prefer subtlety, like "Ojala," by Silvio Rodriguez, probably [...]

Well, I haven't done one of these in quite a while. A rather long while. Ever since I went away on that vacation-thing. But I've settled comfortably back into this blogging routine, so there's most definitely no reason for me to come back around with a recap of my favourite tracks I wrote about during the course of the week. But considering that it's been a while, I won't limit myself to the usual five suspects, and instead list all my favourite songs since the last Rated Ox I did . [...]

Did you know that the Egyptian numeral for the number 100,000 was a hieroglyph representing a tadpole? Isn't that cute? Weren't ancient civilizations cute? A tadpole! What a choice! I mean, they could have chosen anything to represent such a large integer, and maybe something more imposing than a tadpole, like an elephant, or the broken spine of a Hebrew slave. But no; they stuck with the image of a cute little frog baby as a symbol for a lofty number: what a bunch of aesthetes! I mention this because I want [...]

Well, the timing on this one is perfect. As a result of rain, logistics and shitty prep by us, we didn't head up to Sappyfest yesterday and ended up missing most of the bands we added to the latest installment of the Canadian Mixtape project. Oh well. Such is life I guess. So, where do we stand with Quebec. Montreal is often called the epicentre of music for Canada - and maybe outside of Brooklyn, the biggest spot for huge indie bands - but we tried to stay away from some of the bigger names. So [...]

Do you remember ? ' Do you remember some warm september... one sunny afternoon... ' I can't resist dealing with a song called 'Say it ain't so' and not evoke Murray Head . Murry Head ? One night in Bangkok ? ouch.. forget this one ! Prefer : Mademoiselle, Children only play (Do you remember...), Cocktail Molotov, Los Angeles, Never even thought, Last daze of an empire, Say it ain't so, Joe... Well, Murray Head ! In a different style, but both inspired and talented, - and comparisons must being stopped here - [...]

Various Artists / Two Way Monlogues: Mixtape Volume 1 (independent) Toronto has had a long history of nurturing its independent artists through name-branded showcase series, long-running events such as Wavelength, Elvis Mondays, Pitter Patter Nights and Nu Music Nites becoming trustworthy seals of approval that meant that even if you didn't know the performers on the bill, you could trust that someone with some reliable taste thought they were worthwhile. The tradition continues with the relatively new Two Way Monologues series, based out of Rancho [...]
