Do you remember ? ' Do you remember some warm september... one sunny afternoon... ' I can't resist dealing with a song called 'Say it ain't so' and not evoke Murray Head . Murry Head ? One night in Bangkok ? ouch.. forget this one ! Prefer : Mademoiselle, Children only play (Do you remember...), Cocktail Molotov, Los Angeles, Never even thought, Last daze of an empire, Say it ain't so, Joe... Well, Murray Head ! In a different style, but both inspired and talented, - and comparisons must being stopped here - [...]

Various Artists / Two Way Monlogues: Mixtape Volume 1 (independent) Toronto has had a long history of nurturing its independent artists through name-branded showcase series, long-running events such as Wavelength, Elvis Mondays, Pitter Patter Nights and Nu Music Nites becoming trustworthy seals of approval that meant that even if you didn't know the performers on the bill, you could trust that someone with some reliable taste thought they were worthwhile. The tradition continues with the relatively new Two Way Monologues series, based out of Rancho [...]
Last night reaffirmed why I love music. While that horribly cliché and overused statement may sound a dime a dozen to all you skeptics, Mark Berube 's return to Vancouver last night was an interactive experience that really made you feel like you were part of something special. It shouldn't be surprising, as Mark is a natural performer who really embraces the live setting and tries to give back to the audience. Whether it is cameos, sing-alongs or cartwheeling fans and friends, Berube always gives you something you can't get from listening to his record on the way home [...]

Some good news for all local yocals. Mark Berube is back in the city and will be playing a show @ Lime on Tuesday, Feb 26th. What the River Gave the Boat was one of my favorite Vancouver releases last year and I'd wager we will all get a nice preview of his up coming record as well. For those unfamiliar with Mark's work, you can check out a few songs. He's got an amazing cadence and his words fit together so well, but he's also got a powerful singing voice and funky arrangements. [...]
AS : "Have you heard the story of what the river gave the boat? I said "No, I haven't" She said "Don't worry," as she rolled down the window and gave the wind a smile to carry to the next car down the road. There's still a long way to go." Those words are the conclusion from Mark Berube last album : What the river gave the boat : a superb collection of songs and lyrics that immediatly gave me the desire listening to [...]

Last week, I featured music from Filter. This week, I'm focusing on my favorite Canadian PR firm, Killbeat. You can thank them for many of the Why The F*ck Is No One In America Blogging About series. Besides giving me (and you all) some of the greatest Americana music from The Great White North, Jesse from Killbeat has your indie rock, your female pastoral folk-pop and your power-electro-pop bases covered. The bases are covered so well in fact, that Killbeat is giving away a grab [...]

Rebecca Pronsky new record, Arrivals And Departures , comes out in October on Nine Mile Records . On the two songs below she shifts from the honky-tonk of "Million Days" to the ethereal womyny track "Birds". I've got place in my heart for each, have you? You can pre-order it here . Million Days Birds ------------------- There are a couple post that have slipped through the cracks over the last month or two. They'll never see the light of [...]

Just a quick post to jump start your weekend. First - don't forget that Lions in the Street are at the Bourbon tonight, along with White Licorice and Mad Shadow . If you like the swagger of the Stones, but hate expensive tickets and gaunt, wrinkle faced front men, LINS are for you. Tickets are 10 bucks, and the show finishes up @ 11PM, so go early. I already sang their praises in the first installment of Sunday Morning Coffee , so I won't go on too much. [...]
Mark Berube's new release, What the River Gave the Boat, is part one of a double album (part two will of course be titled What the Boat Gave the River). All cleverness aside it's a pretty suitable name for an album that seems to float dreamily from story to story propelled by acoustic guitar, strings, accordion, light percussion and most importantly Berube's voice. Berube sings with a distinctive reedy voice that sometimes drifts into a Tom Waits style rasp. It's this voice along with the album's subtle orchestration that brings the narrative in each song to the forefront. Listen for [...]

Keeping with the Canadian theme today, I wanted to spend a few minutes with the new release from Vancouver song writer Mark Berube . It would be easy to simplify things and say that Berube is just another talented song writer from the Great White North and let your imagination pre-determine on all of the sounds you expect to hear with that descriptor. It would be easy, but completely unfair to the ambition of his latest record . It would be easy, but completely unfair [...]
