Forse molti si sono dimenticati di un gruppo come i Tallk Talk che al di la di alcuni singoli balzati nei quartieri alti delle classifiche italiane hanno scritti pagine di grande malinconia visionaria nella scena synthpop degli anni ottanta. Dischi come The Party's Over, The Colour of Spring e Spirit of Eden matengono , per noi, la loro forza evocative grazie al carisma del cantante Mark Hollis . Ora a trent'anni dal loro primo album, era il 1982, la label inglese Fierce Panda annuncia l'uscita della raccolta Spirit Of Talk Talk con la partecipazione di [...]

When AllMusic gave Chris Brown's Graffiti 1/5, I bought it anyway, only to regret it 6 mins into the album. Well, here I am, lying in my Princess Tam Tam bikini in some ethereal beach in Dubai, once again, ignoring AllMusic, and giving Lana Del Rey's Born To Die a shot. Call me a philanthropist, but I'm a firm believer that everyone deserves a chance, just like Elena did for Damon in the Vampire Diaries. Sigh...where do I start..."Money is the reason we exist, everybody knows [...]

I've mentioned Talk Talk's final studio album before , but it has been a few years. Recorded in 1991, Laughing Stock and the previous album Spirit of Eden were a departures from the band's more pop efforts previously. These albums represented Talk Talk stretching their creative muscles by incorporating a less-synthesizer and more acoustic instrument approach, drawing from many music styles, but employing a very jazz-influenced approach. It's this overall ambiance and approach that confounded fans and caused a dramatic drop in sales. Much as albums from bands like Big Star and Velvet Underground [...]
Wow. What a weekend. I'm sure you're all out getting loaded, but some of us have to work tomorrow. I guess that's why they call it Labor Day, amiright!? Hi, I'm Evan. You might remember me from such drunken blog posts as this one I'm writing right now. Also last night's post and most of [...]
Things happen quickly. Good times are had. New friends are made. Fresh experiences teach us about ourselves and the world. There's always that one person who wants to drag you out of the present and into the past. Don't bother. It's not worth the effort. Just keep rolling. But remind yourself to take a moment [...]

I'd like to walk through the snow at 230am in the small town that I grew up in. I remember some nights with the college students gone i'd walk my dog through an empty downtown and a foot of new snow. I used to like to imagine, if music played naturally in the wind that night, what it would sound like or what would I like [...]
For most people Talk Talk were a flash in the pan new wave band with two hits, "It's My Life" and the self-titled "Talk Talk", but the band, led by the unmistakable voice of Mark Hollis, veered hard left on subsequent albums, pursuing a much darker, experimental, and esoteric creative form. This "single" from the band's underground classic Spirit of Eden , didn't even make a dent in the UK singles chart, which is unsurprising given how nothing on this record even remotely resembles a marketable pop song. Most of the music was improvised in the studio [...]

... Mark Hollis I Watershed (1998)
Those who enjoyed Talk Talk's Colour of Spring, Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock should find much to love in this solo outing. Do not expect virtuosity. Coming into Mark Hollis with such an attitude will cause you to miss the point of this album. This is about emotion, and the very frailties that make us human. If you seek machine-like precision and processed-to-death sounds, look elsewhere.

It's been an oddly, poppy, psychedelic sort of day today. I was searching the internet for a particular Monkees track to complete this post, while the TV was on in the background. I was half-watching Cash Cab, and I suddenly hear a question about Mickey Dolenze being the voice of Snuggle (the teddy bear from those commercials). How coincidental. So, I go on about my search. I pause for a moment to check my email, and on the news page that loads while I sign in, the headline reads [...]

Some people are just so generous, you know? For instance, where I work, our patients are always bringing us goodies. They've all picked up on how much we love to eat, so they mostly bring food, like chocolate, all manner of homemade baked goods, fruit baskets, salt-water taffy, tomato pie, and yesterday someone even brought some left-over subs. It was lucky for me, actually, as I'd forgotten to bring something to eat, so I had one for dinner! Very kind of them. Sometimes they bring in other gifts, too, like candles or hand [...]
Today was one of those "I hate my life" days, but since I came home from work things are slowly turning around. Maybe a little Sunday Mix Tape will help sooth my frazzled nerves. RULES for uninitiated noobs : With roughly 100MB of webspace, I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be deposited on your iPods or Zunes or Kingklangs or whatever the industry is currently pushing on you. Sometimes there will be themes that link all the songs together, other times I'll just throw songs at a wall (not literally) and see [...]
I'm back in Los Angeles. I slept for about 10 hours and am still getting reacclimatized to this place. I'd like to extend a "Happy Mother's Day" to my mom. Of course, she's probably not reading this website today. She only ever visits the page when I've written something nasty about baby boomers or blamed my parents for making me a miserable human being. I don't think she's ever seen a positive note on this page. Oh well, I guess that's my fault. Also, congratulations to Nicci. She was in a student film that premiered tonight, and she [...]

I had a great find on Sunday in Lyme Regis in Dorset. In the Sanctuary bookshop I discovered a huge bundle of old copies of Wire . For the sum of £15.00 I have four years of the magazine to work through reading reviews, interview and generally running backwards through time and electronic music. First couple I have read through have had a great interview with Mark Hollis , Disco Inferno and a wonderful piece on John Oswald and The Grateful Dead/John Oswald Grayfolded which I have since downloaded [...]

from allmusic.com... Achingly gorgeous and hauntingly stark, Mark Hollis' self-titled debut picks up where he left off with Talk Talk 's Laughing Stock seven years earlier, re-emerging at the nexus point where jazz, ambient, and folk music collide. It's quite possibly the most quiet and intimate record ever made, each song cut to the bone for maximum emotional impact and every note carrying enormous meaning. Hollis paints his music in fine, exquisite strokes, with an uncanny mastery of atmosphere that's frequently devastating. And if anything, his singularly resonant voice has grown even more [...]
