Former Red House Painters frontman and current Sun Kil Moon brooder Mark Kozelek is releasing a new live EP. 7 Songs Belfast will be available for digital download starting September 1st. www.markkozelek.com

(the presidential trio) With the 2008 presidental election rapidly approaching, it's entirely appropriate that a trio of songwriters -- Christian Kiefer , J. Matthew Gerken and Jefferson Pitcher -- has collaborated on an ambitious project: a three-CD boxed set featuring a song about each U.S. president. (Move over, Sufjan Stevens and your state project!) Called Of Great and Mortal Men: 43 Songs for 43 U.S. Presidencies , the collection is admittedly a dense body of work, something to digest slowly and carefully over time, rather than [...]

While I may be barely living, I assure you. . . I'm alive. Just a few more weeks until I get a break. I have to admit, a small part of me so dearly wants to put this blog to bed. Just a bullet to the back of the head, and then watch it drop into a watery grave. A larger part of me, unfortunately, can't deal with that ending. Thanks to anyone who still comes by here every once in a while to see if I'm still kicking. I know I'll never win a blog [...]

New Wax April is Mark Kozelek's first album of original material since his 2003 debut under the Sun Kil Moon moniker. With mostly the same supporting cast as Ghosts Of The Great Highway and Tiny Cities , the expansive April , which clocks in at a whopping 74 minutes, also features guest vocals from Will Oldham and Ben Gibbard. For those of you with short attention spans, April may prove a bit overwhelming, but those that are well-versed in [...]

one of my most anticipated records of the 08 is now available for consumption, of sorts. stream the new sun kil moon on their myspace page, which can be found right http://myspace.com/sunkilmoon . havent listened to it but i have it on good authority that it "slays," thats coming from kyle at more cowbell . so, take it for what its worth. he's typically pretty right on. the gutter twins are on letterman tomorrow evening, that is wednesday march 19. they are also here in atlanta @ the roxy on friday, a show [...]
Here is my fantasy SXSW schedule for this Thursday, March 13, which didn't get quite so crowded as Wednesday's schedule. I would probably try to spend the afternoon at the Clermont Team 's party. They have turned me on to a lot of good music in the past year. I saw the Helio Sequence recently, and that was a good show; and I'd love to see Elf Power and hear songs from their new album which will be released this year. I have two of the Scottish bands , the Dykeenies [...]
Some songs demand more attention to be fully appreciated. Songs that are so powerful once you've heard the lyrics that they can change people's lives forever. Today I'll share with you five of my favourites. . Townes van Zandt - Tecumseh Valley Our Mother the Mountain (Tomato, 1969) The devastatingly beautiful Tecumseh Valley tells the tale of a young woman growing up through rock-hard times. As money is running out – and [...]
With all this talk of Sun Kil Moon's forthcoming album, April, set to release in a little over two months, we spent part of last weekend re-ingesting a few albums from Mark Kozelek's existing catalog, including one of our favorites, 2001's What's Next To The Moon. Billed as a Kozelek solo album, and released several years [...]
First 'Nac post of the new year. A few musical (and a couple non-musical) things occupying my ear and brain-space over the past week or so... I've been resistant to putting the little one in front of the boob tube too much at such a young age (Mr. B just passed the six month mark), but thanks to M@, I've finally started saving up episodes of Yo Gabba Gabba on the ol' Tivo. It's as much for
With JustHipper on her sick bed this week I went alone to the Dancehouse Theatre last Tuesday night for a rare opportunity to see Mark Kozelek, he of Red House Painters and Sun Kil Moon fame, live in concert for only the second time in my life and a good 13 or so years since I saw Red House Painters at the much missed Duchess Of York in Leeds. Looking back I'd say that JustHipper might have been better off back at home as to enjoy the Kozelek live, acoustic experience you'd have to be on more than just nodding [...]

Rarities Mark Kozelek's voice could make "The Thong Song" sound hauntingly melancholic. Formerly of the criminally overlooked Red House Painters, Kozelek latest material consists predominantly of acoustic-based folk songs. With an obvious pension for cover songs, Kozelek has released an album of AC/DC covers under his own name (sounds strange but it works) as well as an album of Modest Mouse covers under the Sun Kil Moon moniker. While his covers are moving interpretations, Kozelek shines in his own material as well. Songs like [...]

Is it Tuesday already? I spent hours yesterday making a Wolf Parade photo page and updating the photos on the main index page for our domain name. A significant number of readers find us this way. On the main index page, each photo links to the concert post. So, I really have nothing special created for Time Travel Tuesday today, and I'm going to take the lazy route and post some cover songs. The Cars' debut [...]
On Sunday night, I joined a friend of mine on a seat-of-our-pants road trip to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to see a quietly promoted warm-up gig for Modest Mouse before the band kicked off its big spring tour in support of its fantastic new album, We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank . According to Tickets.com, who were the online sellers for tickets to this show, no more seats were available when I checked on Thursday night. A few phone calls placed to area record stores told me that the website's claims were dubious. My [...]

It's Friday, I've had a really crappy last few days, it's my night off, and I'm going to post something that makes me happy. Sun Kil Moon makes me happy. Because if I close my eyes, painted on the back of my eyelids is sunshine spilling through my front window. Outside of that window is a shade tree and a hammock and these songs are playing on the drifting breeze buzzing by my head. The solo tracks are from the limited release that came out this December. Listen: Floating [...]

"Little Drummer Boy Live" Caldo Verde; 2006 5.5/10 If there's any complaint about Mark Kozelek that holds any water, it's his tendency to linger too long in the world of sad bastard pseudo-pop and confuse repetition with soul. And I can understand that: Kozelek is a troubled man with deep, nasal vocals that often shroud what subtleties may exist and, when he extends song sections without changing anything, those subtleties are either lost or extend their welcome. I'm not saying I agree, though. Kozelek's work, especially Sun Kil Moon's "Ghosts of the Great Highway", [...]
I ordered and received Little Drummer Boy Live after I had already plotted out my 25 (or so) Favorites of 2006 , so I wasn't sure at first if I was going to include anything from it or not. This double CD set is Mark Kozelek 's latest release and his first live release if you don't count the limited edition "White Christmas Live" (2002). I guess he got tired of all those poor-quality bootlegs that have been passed around and decided he could make a recording with much better results. He was [...]
