Devo: The Pop Apocalypse

By Ian McQuaid Watch more on Network Awesome "The enemy is at the gate, and the enemy is the human mind itself, or lack of it " There are bands who grunt a career out of being really dumb. Devo aren't one of them. They're the archest of art school pranksters, all wrapped up in parodying Western culture with affection and despair. When founder and director Gerald Casale likens them to [...]

Devo Say Humanity's 'Devolution' Proven by 'Stupid' Sarah Palin

Devo Performs "Whip It"
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive , Spinner Interview Tim Mosenfelder, Getty Images It's been 38 years since Devo first played at Kent State University and, if you believe the band, humankind has been devolving ever since. But while their message in the '70s sounded alien and disturbing, their music is now oddly close to the mainstream. Last year's 'Something for Everybody,' their first album in 20 years, is very [...]

It's All Devo!

It's All Devo! I've just finished reading the ' We Are Devo ' book, by Jade Dellinger & David Giffels, and edited by Jeff Winner. It was originally published in 2003, I think, and the authors put our an updated paperback edition a few years ago. Click here to read a chapter of early Devo radical art-driven music making under the name Sextet Devo. The book is pretty cool, giving insights into much of Gerald Casale's and Mark Mothersbaugh's early art inclinations and college-aged weirdness fun. A good chunk of the book brings you right [...]

Check Out: Check Yo' Ponytail 2 mixtapes (CoS Premiere)

Most people give crap to Monday, and deservedly so. Who wants to go back to work and/or school and mourn the passing of yet another weekend? But when it comes right down to it, Tuesday might just suck more in the long run. At least with Monday, we've all known it sucked since we were kids (thanks Garfield!) Tuesday, on the other hand, is just as bad, yet it perpetuates the myth that being one day closer to Friday is soooo much better. Well, it ain't. So, in a way to win back the day that breaks even [...]

DEVO - Jocko Homo - Austin, TX - 3/27/11
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Jason Merritt, Getty Images for Art of Elysium Devo were supposed to come to Austin for last November's Fun Fun Fun fest, but when guitarist Bob Mothersbaugh injured his hand , they had to postpone their entire tour. Sunday night, the art-rock legends showed up at Austin City Limits Live at the Moody Theatre on the heels of another big event. "I would [...]

The fan bases for these two bands might be worlds apart, but they share some sensibilities.

Mixtape de The Go! Team para Oki-ni

Mixtape de The Go! The Go! Team es el nuevo invitado a colaborar en este proyecto. Uno de sus integrantes, y fundador, Ian Parton, comenta que este mix acerca a las fuentes de inspiración del [...]

The A/V Connection: Music for Film and other Visuals

The A/V Connection: Music for Film and other Visuals El jefe of kooky, cult-pop film scoring, Mark Mothersbaugh (member of Devo, longtime musical rainmaker for director Wes Anderson, etc. etc.) is working on a Mex comedy, Private Perez , involving a crime lord on a family rescue mission in Iraq. If 1) Mexican organized crime and 2) Iraq don't necessarily scream "funny" these days, Mothersbaugh's style should be a super match for this picture – his scores usually manage to be poignant and tickle without being full-out cartoonish. Milk and Cheerios, EVOO and balsamic, the Stones and Martin Scorsese...perfect together! This time the Stones' recording [...]

De-evolution is real

De-evolution is real Vice has a really good interview with Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh, wherein he talks about de-evolution (naturally), technology, and the future of our planet. He's a smart, witty, and insightful guy. My favorite bit: "I think the internet is the most positive thing that's happened in your lifetime. It's the closest thing to democracy that's ever existed in human civilization. Now we have to wait for whatever nation it's going to be that will manage to send a laser into space and knock out every satellite, and then none of us will have any [...]

Late Night Sounds: Top 5 On TV (June 14-18)

Late Night Sounds: Top 5 On TV (June 14-18) Wow, this turned out to be an uncommonly excellent week for nocturnal emissions of cool tunes on the tube. Usually, there are one or two clinkers we'll throw into the mix here just for a couple of cheap laughs (And really, what's the point of living if you can't have fun at the expense of others?). But this week it's just solid sounds from front to back, from sharp-shooting buzz bands to old heroes returning to the fray. Cyndi Lauper/Allen Toussaint - Late Show with David Letterman (June 14, 2010) [...]

Devo Gets ‘Fresh’ With Stephen Colbert

Devo Gets ‘Fresh’ With Stephen Colbert Last night's edition of The Colbert Report represented one small step for Devo and one giant step for Devolution as the revitalized New Wave heroes showed off the 21st century version of their look, sound, and theory in a performance and interview. The band's brain trust, Mark Mothersbaugh and Gerald Casale, sat with Colbert and chatted about their long-held notions of the human race's "devolution," with the ever-quick Colbert opining that since he doesn't believe in evolution, neither does he believe in devolution, preferring instead the theory of "intelligent decline." Devo also revealed that they relied [...]

New DEVO Album Now Streaming

The new album from Devo, Something For Everybody is now streaming online! Lead singer and co-founder Mark Mothersbaugh told Reuters that the U.S. band's first album in 20 years Something for Everybody was recorded while implementing an online campaign involving fans' input, similar to focus groups and research that companies conduct. "We thought people understood us enough to make observations which could be really important," Mothersbaugh said. A promotional sticker is affixed to the new album stating, "88 percent focus group approved." Check it out below and we're [...]
