Katy Goodman's definitely an in-demand lady at the moment with her work split between Vivian Girls and La Sera. She'll be releasing her latest La Sera effort, Sees the Light , on March 27 via Hardly Art . From what we've heard so far, sounds like a hit. Luckily we caught up with her via the Internet to get her thoughts on the upcoming SXSW Festival... ATH: What is [...]

Mark Ryan's musical claim to fame is as the frontman of the Texas pop-punk group The Marked Men. In recent years, though, Ryan's explored more bizarre musical fare with his solo project Mind Spiders . The outfit released its self-titled debut back in March 2011, creating a sound that combined '50s pop, kraut rock, garage rock, and sci-fi soundtracks into a truly otherworldly musical experience. On February 28th, Mind Spiders' second LP, Meltdown , will hit stores via Dirtnap Records. Its latest single, "On the Radio", is another mutated specimen of Ryan's fusion-heavy musical style. Though [...]

More pics from the other bands, and perhaps some discussion, later. If I don't get around to it, though - GO TO TONIGHT'S SHOW, DAMMIT!!!
Get the band's debut album, out now on Dirtnap Records.

You've got to be all about High Tension Wires if you're a Texas, especially an Austinite or Dentonian! The band is comprised of some our best punk/power-pop/garage bands around, namely Marked Men and Riverboat Gamblers , so you have to know it's going to be a good time all around. The band's got an album coming out on Dirtnap Records around March 15th titled Welcome New Machine . If you base it off this first single, it's everything that you [...]

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars From the instant you press play on your stereo, to the moment in which its final notes resound, Mind Spiders refuse to stop. In that miniscule pregnant pause before the guttural guitar resounds through your speakers, take a breather, because you'll need all your strength to keep up with their punk pace. "Go!" is the album opener and does exactly what its title exclaims. It's an almost two minute scramble of garage rock and gang vocals that pack a hell of [...]

Much to dig … Killer Nuggets -y rock from Mind Spiders (ex- Marked Men ). Super trio Middle Brother brings the type of rootsy harmonies you expect (and love) from ex- Dawes , Deer Tick , Delta Spirit members. Ex- Vivian Girls singer Katy Goodman goes off on her own for a sweet La Sera . Panda Bear helps Ducktails ready for a new LP. Shout out to MattO for getting the Kordan jam lodged in my head and stuck on repeat. Finally a 3-day, lazy weekend bonus [...]

Out of the ashes of Marked Men comes Mark Ryan, pushing through with his own group, Mind Spiders. The band will be putting out their self-titled album on January 25th via Dirtnap Records, which basically guarantees goodness with their releases. On this first single you get a little hint of garage grittiness filling it up, but the pacing provides a little bit more of a straight power-pop feel to it, allowing the band to capture both audiences. Yeah, it's a short track, but if you give [...]
*MP3: Mind Spiders - "No Romance" Mind Spiders is the new project from Marked Men...

Marked Men co-leader Mark Ryan has elected to take advantage of that band's hiatus to get a little something on the side. That little something will henceforth be known as Mind Spiders , and their debut disc of blink-and-you'll-miss-it lo-fi pop rave ups will be born unto this earth in January courtesy of Dirtnap , the noisy little label that recently brought us White Wires . A blur of frenetic guitars and metronomic drums, lead single No Romance wastes little time getting down to business, and certainly doesn't wear out [...]

ARTIST: 777'' Vol.011 DATE: 10-17-10 WRITER: Ollie Ottoman The Marked Men are a lost cause. Here we had one of the most catchy and true bands, reaching their stride, and no one noticed. Their last album Ghosts came and went, and not only did it go unnoticed in the musical mainstream, but it didn't even make a dent in the punk rock audience (save for a few passionate [view more]

We were asked to participate in Rubber Gloves' FREE WEEK right as everyone gets back in the school vibe and to handpick a few bands to showcase at our show September 4th. Mind Spiders are an obvious one-side project of one of local punk legends Marked Men , we've already been shoving in your face for awhile now . Sunnybrook and Melting Season are both associates of Denton musical ensemble Sleep Whale -both bands run the gamit of soundscapes, with Sunnybrook's songs being much more blown-out with thick-set contruction and foggy electronic samples while Melting Season [...]

Wednesday, May 26, 2010 Is everyone excited for Memorial Day Weekend? Are you heading out of town or sticking around for the mayhem that is the Chaos In Tejas festival? It's a busy weekend for me but I'm going to take in at least a few shows. At the top of my "must see" list is The Marked Men, a punk band out of Denton that crafts quick hitting jams with a surprising pop sheen. But don't mistake these guys with some shitty power pop/punk band out [...]
More pop punk than you can shake a stick at. From the short-lived Sludgeworth to current stuff that borders on mall-punk, pop punk comes in many different flavors. Consider this a sampler platter. MP3 | MxPx - Punk Rawk Show from the 1995 album Teenage Politics MP3 | All Time Low - Dear Maria Count Me In from the 2007 album So [...]

As I noted in my Jay Reatard review yesterday, it already feels like the explosion of next-wave lo-fi/garage that burst into indie popularity last year is fading from public favor. Let's hope there's still time for the Marked Men, a Denton, Texas band who released Ghosts in January to notice more minimal than a Paris Hilton bikini. Ghosts is a fast, furious rock 'n' roll record, a super-charged spin on Gentleman Jesse and His Men's own amp-busting retro-rock (which I was, uh, maybe a li'l hyperbolic about last year). But with membership [...]
I've loved all the great garage bands to come out of the area in the last few years, namely Denton ; Wax Museums , Uptown Bums , Bad Sports , etc... Here is a band from the far-off Minneapolis scene, a two-piece band known as Birthday Suits shred loud, fast, and high-strung songs that last about 2 minutes - no more, no less. What catches my interest is how close the vocal harmonies are for such a fast-paced band, I mean sure its easy for the Raveonettes to pull that off playing slow indie pop, [...]
If I haven't left you by the August of two thousand ten, I am truly a pathetic person. Cheers to the countdown, my long-time & recurring acquaintance. MARKED MEN - Ditch (2009) Is there reason to try? You'll never make it on your own Hang your head and just cry No reason to leave, just stay home, all alone You don't know why it creeps up slowly in your mind You know it's a lie-those little voices of your own Ditch, stuck in a [...]
With vocalist/guitarist Jeff Burke leaving the band, Ghosts will almost certainly be the final album from the Denton, Texas band Marked Men . It is the first record I've heard from them and it has me digging around for more. Marked Men play garage-influenced pop-punk rock-n-roll, which errs to the side of pop-punk I'm not a huge fan of but this is still pretty good. Just imagine the edgy speed-jangle of what Buddy Holly on methamphetamine might sound like or (for something a little more succinct) perhaps a little like less razor-sharp incarnation of [...]
