We haven't had German curiosities for a while. Well, here are some: Marlene Dietrich singing a folk anthem, Bowie going to Berlin, a Schlager icon rocking out for peace, a short-haired teen doing Be My Baby, Chubby Checker twisten in Deutsch , and a politician getting remixed. * * * Marlene Dietrich – Sag' mir wo die Blumen sind (1962).mp3 The Springfields - Sag mir, wo die Blumen sind (1963).mp3 While Mae West [...]

Screen legend Marlene Dietrich provided the inspiration for Beyonce's July L'Uomo Vogue cover shoot, and now a behind-the-scenes video of the "Best Thing I Never Had" diva's day on the set for the mag has been unveiled. "She was able to deliver emotions nonstop, from the first picture to the end," photographer Francesco Carrozzini praises in the clip. "And for this I have to thank her, because I just clicked and I captured her." Watch 4 songstress Bey shoot her spread for the Italian men's magazine below. [...]

This is the first of two compilations of German hits covering the era from the rise of Nazism to its demise. The first compilation leads us through the latter years of the Weimar Republic to 1937, just before war became an inevitable prospect. The second mix will start in 1938 — the year of the Anschluß, or annexation of Austria — through the war to 1944 (there were no hits in 1945, it seems). None of the pre-war Schlager featured here are of the Nazi propaganda sort, and even the propaganda of the war-period songs is subtle, framing [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours SXSW 2010? SXSW 1956, more like. Unapologetically retro, Pete Molinari belies his relative youth and Kent roots with a heady, vintage Americana gumbo of bluegrass, rockabilly and country flavors. Simulacrum, it may be, but the singer-songwriter has the vocal chops to pull off the pastiche beautifully. Spinner checked in with Chatham's most lonesome cowboy. Describe your sound in your own words Well without naming [...]

The White Stripes' cover of "Look Me Over Closely" could turn anyone into a Marlene Dietrich fan, I say, but a biopic starring Gwyneth Paltrow? Hmmm… Times Online reports that the Oscar-winning actress, Goop founder, and "Killing Me Softly" singer will produce and take the lead in an upcoming film about the life of the famous actress/singer. According to the biopic's writer, Andrew Davies ( Pride and Prejudice , Bleak House ), the script begins at the time of [...]

Last week I returned from my first trip of the year to mainland Europe. I spent six busy days in Germany, though it would be more correct to say that I spent it in Bayern (or Bavaria as it's known in English). My previous visit to Deutschland was last summer when I attended the wedding of my friend Christian and his wife Ria. The main reason for my visit this time was to attend a double birthday celebration in Nuremberg for both Christian and Ria who were born 24 hours apart in 1980. I was also invited to a double [...]

Seminal folk revivalist, labor organizer, five-string banjo master, and champion-of-community Pete Seeger turns ninety years old today, May 3. In his honor, folk venues across the country are hosting singalongs and fundraisers under the umbrella concept of F or Pete's Sake, Sing , with all profits to benefit Clearwater, the educational and environmental organization which Seeger founded a few decades ago to clean up the Hudson River north of New York City. Acoustic Music Scene has a relatively comprehensive list of local hootenannies and group sings participating in the global celebration. [...]
![Christina Aguilera Pushes The Pram [Listening Station]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1478345_lg.jpg)
Somehow I missed the news that Christina Aguilera was going to sing a track for the comic book tie-in The Spirit , although that could be because the film itself barely blipped onto my radar. Speaking of blips, "Falling In Love Again (Can't Help It)" is an eight-minute plugged-in reworking of the Frederik Hollander/Sammy Lerner song first brought to prominence by Marlene Dietrich , and subsequently covered by lots of other acts ; Aguilera's version has a musical bed that echoes the moody electro of Broadcast and Pram, and a remarkably restrained vocal take. Clip [...]
Though I believe that folk, most especially in the way it functions as a channel of engagement and public discourse, is by definition an agency of cultural change, I have been reluctant to use this blog as a forum for advocating explicit change of any one type. Perpetuating the relevance of folk as an agenda in and of itself, it seems to me, precludes taking sides for any particular agenda which might be carried by folk, lest we alienate opposing values, and in doing so, diminish the potential of folk to remain dialogic. But it's [...]

Give us a peace equal to the war Or else our souls will be unsatisfied, And we will wonder what we have fought for And why the many died. Give us a peace of accepting every challenge -- The challenge of the poor, the black, of all denied, The challenge of the vast colonial world That long has had so little justice by its side. Give us a peace that dares us to be wise. Give us a peace that dares us to be strong. Give us a peace that dares us still uphold Throughout the [...]

today marks the two year anniversary of my father's departure from the physical realm. in remembrance, i'd like to credit him with his overwhelming influence on me to channel my emotions into music. it's funny: he always lectured me on not pursuing music further then a hobby, but his actions taught how to relate to music emotionally. charming hypocrisy. he played piano and accordian by ear. nothing special, but he could spit out a couple old german tunes. he was a romantic, contemplative character, and music was always the trigger in him for a tear. he'd beg me [...]

The Best Men of Brel-post ( below ) stirred quite a few reactions. Here's five more coverversions, thanks for the requests and the mp3s you send me. Emiliana Torrini (pictured) is a sureshot on this blog, if she only would sing in French. Alas, the charming songbird keeps it English. But she did a beautiful (and tearful) version of Ne Me Quitte Pas , so there. Talk about tears: Marlene Dietrich is on the verge of a very serious breakdown while singing Bitte Geh Nicht Fort ( Ne Me Quitte [...]
