Another great year for music and another difficult one to whittle down a huge list of albums that came out and try and make a top ten , my list was in the Burroughs stage (chicken scrawl on scraps of paper) for quite some time I even make a graph (above) but as you can see i kinda got distracted one track mind and all. As with last year my list is no order apart from alphabetized Department of Eagles - In ear park Album always makes me think of a log cabin with [...]

Every year when these 'Best Of' lists start spreading over the web like some sort of monkey-born virus, there is one album that i just don't get. Well, usually more than one. There are probably many albums that I don't get, but there is one that I don't get to the point of disdain. This year's big winner? Is this what the kids call 'prog rock?? [...]

8. Fuck Buttons Street Horrrsing Four minutes and forty-five seconds into Street Horrrsing the atmosphere changes for the first time. It evolves from a pretty, hypnotic drone to something a little bit more dense. For the first time on the record there's the cracked and indecipherable effect of yelling vocals through a childish microphone recorder. It's only the first of the changes in atmosphere on a record rife with them, but it's this significant one that sets the tone for the rest of the record. It prepares your [...]

Male is Ben Mjolsness and Jonathan Krohn (do not confuse them with MEN ). Together, they arranged "a series of recording sessions to document their take on improvisation." The sessions featured contributions from members of Exploding Star Orchestra , Pan American , and Joan of Arc . The resulting album, All Are Welcome is coming out on Other Electricities in Februray and is filled with postrock/experimental/jazzy goodness. Listen: "Wrangler For Higher" (box.net mp3) Other Electricities is here . Other Electricities eMusic page is [...]
:: Franz Ferninand has released a demo for a new single . So remember, if it sucks, that's only because it hasn't been mastered yet. Or at least that's what my friends' bands always tell me. :: Wow, a Marnie Stern track topped Stereogum's most popular mp3s of the year . I wonder if all of her slutty industrious slutty activities had something to do with it. :: Looks like Norma Jean has dropped out of the Saint and Sinners [...]

Stereogum posted their Top 50 Most Downloaded Songs yesterday. We took the liberty of picking out the ten best tracks for your summarizing pleasure. 10.) *MP3: Yeasayer - "Sunrise" 9.) *MP3: School of Seven Bells [...]

Wow, one of the best single-show line-ups of the year currated by and staring Quasi , that had us ping-ponging between two floors so there was no downtime. (Though there was some, in my opinion, unecessary overlapping going on which was slightly annoying.) The last time I saw Sam Coomes and Janet Weiss was at NorthSix five years ago and I'd forgotton how good they are. This was also my first time seeing them as a trio (Joanna Bolme, who like Weiss, is also a Jick). Coomes spent a lot of time on [...]

Ladyhawke - "My Delirium" This arresting single by multitalented New Zealand songstress Pip Brown pulls you into the percolating psychodrama of a messed-with woman who isn't coy about the fact that she's losing it. The atmosphere is at once desperate and dangerous—and anchored by deadly hooks. And just when you think you've got the whole thing sussed, the bottom drops out into a languid, creamy near-silence. The Kim Wilde '80s synth-pop vibe is unmistakable, but when you strip away the smoky vocals and propulsive beat, what's left is a twitchy guitar figure that [...]

Especially when it entails the awesome MARNIE STERN. It's all in the name of a little program called HOT NEWZ. See I don't really know how this whole no-one-knows-who's-who thing got started in the indie blogosphere. It's like an unwritten code, only broken for the purpose of panel discussions at ...

Man, I hate commercial Christmas music. Enough already. Please. I just heard a funk version of "Santa Clause Is Coming To Town" and I wanted to kill myself. So I play music like this instead. Marnie Stern - Steely (from This Is It... ) Marnie Stern and Zach Hill should just get married already. Their music is so alike it's uncanny. And then their [...]

Little Joy - Little Joy (Download: Don't Watch Me Dancing ) No offense to Albert Hammond [...]

25) Caddywhompus - Caddywhompus EP I first heard about this New Orleans based guitar-drums duo from the guys in The Calm Blue Sea after they finished a run of shows with the youths across the South earlier this year. Then one day I got an email with a link to download their free EP and I was instantly hooked. I'm honestly having some trouble describing their sound, it's sort of a No Age with some Marnie Stern- ish flourishes kind of thing. Eh, I dunno, [...]

Transformer Marnie Stern, a darling of guitar technicians and navel-gazing music insiders shows why she's loved in limited circles. Her new CD "This is it and I am it and you are it and so is that and he is it and she is it and it is it and that is that" should be a warning right from the start. Not only is it borrowed (poet Alan Watts c. 1960), it's long and self indulgent. The CD cover boasts a sticker claiming “Kill Rock Star Goddess of Shred™, Marnie Stern, has created a pop record [...]

Tis' the week before the week of Christmas, and not a whole lot is new in NYC, which is a good thing when it comes to live music. As always, there's just too much to choose from; so below, our picks for December 15th through the 21st, two per night x seven nights = 14 choice options.....because we all need a little something to look forward to on a Monday. Monday 12/15 - Neil Young, Wilco, Everest [...]
Monday: Shy Child, Free Blood, Pwrfl Power @ Santo's Party House 8pm $10 All three bands have been buzzed about to no end, but what you may not have heard amongst all the hyperbole surrounding these bands is that they all can play and they are all actually worthy of your attention. This is a three headed bill the likes of which we rarely see on a Monday night. Shy Child - "Summer" Free Blood - "Quick and Painful" Pwrfl Power - "Alma Song" [...]

CANNIBAL CHEERLEADER'S BLOODY BEST TOP TEN SONGS OF '08 10. Spinnerette - "Ghetto Love" Squeaking in at the last second care of the newest incarnation of ex-Distiller Brody Dalle, Spinnerette , "Ghetto Love" combines spidery guitar riffs and wailing female vocals to make a part-industrial, part-punk masterpiece that rivals the tunes from such seminal works as Coral Fang . Highly recommended for fans of old [...]
