When thinking about The Chronicles of Marnia , the deliciously named fourth album from Marnie Stern , one line keeps coming back up as a codebreaker: “All the life is based on fantasy/ and all the gods have stopped talking to me.” As the most mature of albums in Stern’s catalog, Marnia navigates its creators darkest doubts and feelings of self-isolation, with a grace that rivals her fingers as they glide through every guitar riff and solo in a 10 track labyrinth. That line [...]

Marnie Stern' s new video matches the theatricality of her latest album's title, The Chronicles of Marnia . Directed by Allie Avital Tsypin, "Immortals" depicts "a humorous and theatrical mythology around the ideal of being a 'rock star' set against the reality of an independent musician," according to a press release. “I was really moved by her honesty, openness and self-deprecating wit," Tsypin states. "It felt imperative to present Marnie as a human being, and shooting in her home helped." Here's a piece of trivia: the video's surreal and lush imagery was inspired by the cover of Stern's debut record , [...]
From March 13 through 16, The Main (formerly known as Emo's) played host to the Brooklyn Vegan day parties. It was a venue I found myself at every day of the festival, not because of the free Jamesons available (though that didn't hurt), but because the lineup curated by Brooklyn Vegan was quite solid. Amongst those playing during the week were Robyn Hitchcock, The Polyphonic Spree, Toy, Death, Palma Violets, and an afternoon put together by metal blog Invisible Oranges, where I saw this awesome sign at KEN Mode's merch table: [...]

Facebook / marniestern.net For about two years now I've been saying I would die a happy man if Annie Clark did a full on rock album (check out her incredible version of Big Black's " Kerosene " for proof), that still applies of course, but for now I'm very pleased to have Marnie Stern in her stead, her latest LP The (excellently titled) Chronicles Of Marnia is possibly her most accomplished, polished and dare I say it commercial record yet. Though don't expect Marnie Stern to be featuring [...]

Marnie Stern Premieres Video for “Immortals” + Watch Now + ‘The Chronicles of Marnia’ Out Now
The Chronicles of Marnia Out NOW on Kill Rock Stars See Marnie Stern on Tour “Super-quick guitar finger work, with all the finesse of heavy metal without the comical bombast. Stern’s shimmery voice tops it all off, occupying the exact stylistic midpoint between Yoko Ono and Belinda Carlisle. " - New York Magazine "...like Eddie Van Halen, she's an adept fingertapper, creating blindingly fast riffs that float like bubbles, even as they speed along at Malmsteenian notes-per-second." - NPR "...one of the most innovative guitarists in indie rock..." - Pitchfork [...]
Marnie Stern – “Immortals” Video
In the video for "Immortals," one of the many heavenly shredfests on her new album The Chronicles Of Marnia , we see the head-spinning guitarist and sharply melodic songwriter Marnie Stern at home in her New York apartment. She's imagining herself besieged by adoring shirtless male fans, and she's somehow missing the angelic kids appearing in her living room. I'm not quite sure what the video's supposed to represent, but it seems like it might have something to do with the idea that Marnie is, at the same time, a fun and relatable lady and the second coming of [...]

Marnie Stern: The Chronicles of Marnia
The Chronicles of Marnia is puzzling and complicated, and it delves into those gray areas with further refined song structures and great lyrics -- and without batting an eye. Marnie Stern made a quick impression as one of the few artists to get a deal based on an unsolicited demo. Since then, though, it turns out it's taken a while to get to know who Marnie Stern is. Or, rather, it's taken her a while to tell us. Her music seems, at first, universal in its shredding, chaotic appeal. In reality, however, it's deeply personal, and a longview [...]

Got To Get Obsessed And Stay There Now
Marnie Stern "You Don't Turn Down" We should all try to do something even 1/1000th as great as the middle section of this song, which sounds a sudden flood of anxious thoughts behind held back by blunt guitar riffs and the defiance in Marnie's voice when she sings "I'm losing hope in my body ." The dynamics in this song are amazing, with the heaviest bits coming after lulls that drag out the anticipation a few beats longer than what you'd expect from a rock song. But that's the real point of this song – [...]

SXSW Friday: Mac DeMarco, White Lung, Chris Cohen, Marnie Stern, and more
At South by Southwest, it is easy to become desensitized to what in other situations would be considered rather remarkable. For example, on Friday I walked down a busy street, and a stage had been erected on a corner lot, and Kool Keith was on the stage, wearing a sequenced scarf on his head, rapping crazy words about himself.… [ Read more ] [ Subscribe to the comments on this story ]
