What's good this week? Funny you should ask, because we were just about to drop a brand new batch of sounds on you. This time around we stomp all over the sonic map, with an electronica man making murky pop moves, an indie art-rock queen amplifying her appeal, and a couple of old-school songwriters from the power-pop and art-folk realms rearing their heads to remind us of some timeless musical values. Step in and find out for yourself... Eskmo - Eskmo [...]
Marnie Stern "Risky Biz" What kills me about "Risky Biz" is that it mostly sounds optimistic. She's singing about knowing that she'll have to give up, she's singing about how whatever she does is not enough, but despite miserable chances, she's holding on to the hope that things will turn out right. Why? Because he outshines them all, duh. And so the anxiety is somehow worth it, even when it's so obvious that she's giving up too much of herself, and she should just let go, cut her losses, move on. It's so sad, and so [...]
A large release list, but the only highlights I could pull out were The Avett Brothers , Marnie Stern , Tim Kasher (from Cursive ) and Tricky . I'm sure I missed some, but once again, I'm in too much of a hurry to care what you have to say. But I'll read the comments anyway, 'cause I love you sort of. :: Alain Johannes , Spark :: Allo Darlin , Allo Darlin :: Amusement Parks on Fire , [...]
There was a time when I thought that Marnie Stern didn't make any sort of sense. No way could such a pint sized, lovely lady make all that noise with her guitar. The problem is when you really think about it it makes all the sense in the world. Her long, dexterous fingers are perfect... Read More

Marnie Stern, killer guitarist (though that isn't what she wants to be known as ) and all-around cool-seeming person. She has a fantastic new album coming out Tuesday, and a killer track from the album has been circulating for awhile, "For Ash." The Rock Shop is a pretty tiny place, so consider this an amazing opportunity to check out Stern up close and personal. And whether that's how she wants to be known or not, her killer guitar will fill up the room the the nth degree. This show is amazingly not sold out, and only $12. I guess [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Before a note was even played, lead singer of Parlovr Alex Cooper asked for audience participation. We were all instructed to start screaming very faintly and gradually build up to a loud collective cry that would build into their opening song. Recently signed to Dine Alone Records, home of Alexisonfire and Tokyo Police Club , this Montreal trio may still be opening for larger acts (Saturday night [...]
The biggest pop-cultural news this week is the release of the new David Fincher film The Social Network , the story of some douche who made $4 billion. The film (which the FP will be catching this evening) reportedly shines a rather dismal light on its protagonist. Nonetheless, Herr Zuckerberg has brought the world some truly wonderful things, including the ability to LIKE Frontier Psychiatrist on Facebook . Over 300 intellectual titans have chosen to make this bold move thus far, and we encourage the rest of you to put your money where you mouse is [...]

Ah, we knew summer would get here eventually (now that the air conditioner is out of the window). It's a quick hit, late in the day installment of the Five to take you into a beautiful weekend. Take these along with you... 1- First up, a fairly stunning, bursting at the seams number from Marnie Stern and her self-titled release out next month on kill rock stars . She plays Mississippi Studios on November 5th. ► Marnie Stern - "For Ash" 2- Speaking of upcoming shows, the [...]
I was browsing twitter before and noticed a convo between two of my favorite bloggers, Knox Road & We Listen For You . They both agreed that the new Marnie Stern song, "Transparency Is the New Mystery", is fantastic, and I got to hand it to them, it is. This lady penned quite a mean guitar riff. The song gets more and more addicting as you keep in on repeat. You should try it out. It's off her self-titled album that will come out on October 5th via [...]
