Breaching my no mixtapes rule (again!), here's an hour long mix from Marhsall Watson. The selection is completely unknown to me but it's all light and bouncy and funky. Not noodly. Just a quick post, on the last proper posting day of the year, to say three things. First, you ought to download this drum and bass mix from Marshall Watson. Lovely jazzy stuff. Second, three special posts tomorrow looking back on 2011. Third, forewarning that I'm going to have a DnB fortnight coming soon, to look back at some dnb tracks from the 90s. http://soundcloud.com/marshall _watson

Pre-release of a new EP from Marshall Watson via Bandcamp - will be out properly in January on iTunes/Amazon. Since Watson has no usual genre, but describes this EP as " Bassy explorations of emotional machinery ", so what is the EP like? My Exploding Heart opens. This is a bassy number in an IDM vein that eventually breaks out the strings. I Want To Hold You Now is more IDM funk with distorted vocals. Stringy Harp Thingy is a bit of IDM that straddles the dream / nightmare border - despite being a [...]

We've had a few of Watson's diverse tracks before . And he's back with a new genre - "shoegaze grime". Or so he says. This is more of his lovely downtempo, string-led techno, blended with some off kilter beats. A bit dnb, a bit Burial, very emotional. Never the expected from Marshall. This is more quality beatage. And a new EP nearly finished to look forward to. ____________________________ www.marshallwatson.net www.soundcloud.com/marshall_wa tson www.facebook.com/Marshall0Wats on

Americans don't do irony do they? It's one of the great British cliches, supported by the election of George W Bush. Twice. After all, the great Bill Hicks said " The definition of black irony is Pro-lifers killing Doctors who do abortions ". I've always assumed it is the inherent difference between a country founded on a utopian vision, compared to a country that invented the term dystopia. Either that, or its just they're too literal to cope with the subtlety required. Last time we had Marshall Watson - with his rework of Dream Academy - I was musing [...]

Underworld remix competition winner Marshall Watson is back with a new tune of delicate loveliness. Listen only. Marshall Watson's work is pretty diverse. His Underworld remix was downtempo electronic. His last release ( here ) was dnb. This time a whole spectrum in six minutes. Starts in a gentle way but with a chorus saying Liar but done in a way that harks back to Deep Forest ( here ), before allowing it to become almost an indie tune - as if someone gave Sarah Records a synthesiser. Before that goes too far the beats get scuffed [...]

We had Underworld remix competition winner Mashall Watson a while back ( here ). Now he's returned with an original tune. His Underworld remix was slow and gentle, so I was expecting more of the same. Not so. This is a dnb tune which reminds me of some of High Contrast's work. Perhaps even that with Underworld on Scribble . It is a rather deft tune that doesn't try to batter into submission under a blizzard of dnb beats but to carry you along on a fizzing wave. Sadly, listen only. Marshall Watson - I Hear Your Eyes [...]
