About a year ago, on a trip to Chicago, I got Ali to give me a copy of a summer mix she had made. Filled with lots of new wavey relatively obscure late 70s/early 80s stuff, I still return to it every so often, especially in warmer months. This song is the first on the mix and it's a great thing to listen to in a crowded subway train while on one's way to work. This was the band's only hit, although they were quite prolific under their original name and a later (more 80s sounding) name, [...]

The great thing about art school is not that it produces great artists. The great thing about art school is that it produces so many wonderful bands. Being in an environment of intense study, exposed to the entire scope of twentieth-century thought, expands the horizons of the participants. Support for quirky works of strong subjectivity, from an institution no less, validates the individual. No longer circumscribed by petit bourgeois concerns, art students then believe they have the freedom to do anything. And what that often meant, in the heady years of the late seventies, was getting together with [...]

Martha and the Muffins are a Canadian band who released their first album in 1977 and had a hit in 1980 with the song "Echo Beach." But don't feel bad if you haven't heard of them. They haven't made a new record in 18 years. I'm not familiar with their output from 30 years ago, but I do know what I like and I like Delicate . It doesn't sound desperate or warmed over or stodgy or any other negative adjective you could attach to a "reunion album." They've gone from the Virgin label to an independent, self-produced [...]

Seems like Canada's got some terrific bands roaming around the great white north. Martha and the Muffins is one of them. If you're old like me, you might remember them as a new wave outfit from back in the late 70s, early 80s. Delicate is their first album in 18 years, so if you don't recall them from their previous incarnation, don't feel bad. This album is really good. I loved in on first listen. The promo single, "Mess," is funky and rhythmic and [...]

It all begins with chemistry. Martha and the Muffins - Three Hundred Years/Chemistry

Oh, man - Martha and the Muffins are back! Did anyone else spend hours dancing to " Echo Beach ?" The anthemic "Mess," posted below, is a fine return to form. It's so slippery, sliding around with perfectly rounded edges. Pity the fool who tries to catch and tame this one. MP3: Martha and the Muffins - Mess [Off Delicate , out February 2nd]

After 18 years (18!) Martha & The Muffins return with a new album on February 2nd with Delicate, their first new studio album on their own Muffin Music label. The album was five years in the making and mixed by David Bottrill (who has worked with Peter Gabriel, David Sylvian, Robert Fripp). Martha and the Muffins emerged from the early punk/new wave/art pop scene in 1977 which was centered around various clubs along Toronto's Queen Street West and the Ontario College of Art. They catapulted into the spotlight with the song [...]
Not to jump to too many premature conclusions with our 'fresh ears on New Wave' thesis this week, but ...uh. I had a hard time finding five more that were out and out crap. (And why make Spandau Ballet our whipping boys, right?) So, five more freshly (re)picked from a fine vine. Already dubbed by the press/ blog world as the "UK Santigold", South Africa-born/ UK-raised newcomer MPHO makes quite the introductory statement on her debut single "Box N Locks", some of which is because it's main musical hook revolves around a catchy sample of Martha & The Muffins' 1980 new wave-punk classic "Echo Beach" , but mostly because she's already on the usually second or third album topic of yearning to break free from the pigeonholing of others. Kicking things off with the admittably charming semi-sneer "Feisty little brown girl/ Raised in Brixton town girl/ [...]

If you count out Zoot Woman 's take on Craig David , the rest of today's covers are rather chill out. For starters, they are acoustic. So have a listen at Matt Nathanson covering James , newcomer Micadelia going the Kurt Cobain way and Van Der Kill doing an excellent job on the 80's classic Echo Beach . Matt Nathanson - Laid (James cover) Micadelia - Polly (Nirvana cover) Van [...]

The Vernal Equinox is only five days away and Chicago is finally defrosting. Here's an upbeat one to celebrate: Martha And The Muffins - Modern Lullaby

Closer, now closer the shore Tarry, now tarry no more Away from the one that I love Away from the one that I love Was there anyone in the post-punk era who led a more charmed life than Martha Ladly? From playing small clubs in Toronto, Canada, to a world wide top ten single, from aspiring art student to graphic designer for some of the most recognized names in music, hers is surely one of the most remarkable careers of the period. That she also left us with just two solo singles, now largely forgotten but [...]
