It's International Women's Day, and International Woman's Month: important markers of how far we've come in our ongoing struggle towards true gender equality, and important reminders that exploring history through the lens of the other is a key component of our ongoing growth as a humanity. But the very fact of International Women's Day is also an indicator of just how deeply we still suffer, and how much we still need to pause, thoughtfully, in order to explore the hidden and not-so-silent assumptions which keep us from being who we should be. And so, as [...]
Back with a new solo album and a local tour date is Martha Wainwright! Come Home To Mama is Martha Wainwright's first new album in four years and will be performing that and more at Largo At The Coronet on...
While Martha Wainwright draws a crowd every time she graces Ireland with her presence, tonight marks a departure for her, having been plucked from the more traditional music venues in the Capital and instead taking to the stage -w ell, altar - of the revered Pepper Canister Church. The youngest member of the Wainwright dynasty, Martha has worked her way from singing back-up for big brother Rufus to carving out a successful career of her own with an established body of solo work now spanning over a decade. It’s the last date of her tour in support of [...]

My dear Martha's back... Canadian chanteuse Martha Wainwright returns to Cork for a Friday night date on Emmet Place. Oh she of the very famous family, enthralled all in attendance at Skibbereen's Cork X Southwest with her chameleonic shifts from heart-warming folkie tales to more rowdy and rambunctious Edith Piaf sea-faring ballads and will now charm the city centre itself with a visit to Cork Opera House . [...]

When you talk about Martha Wainwright , there's a host of expectations that precede her. From her heralded lineage including Loudon Wainwright III (dad) and Rufus (her bro), to her controversial first single 'Bloody Mother Fu*king As*hole,' Martha seemed destined to conquer modern folk right out of the gate. And so far, she's set out to move beyond her roots toward a more assertive approach that's earned her praise from all angles. From playing with legend Emmylou Harris to recognition in worldwide tours, covering ground as far away as Japan. Her latest record 'Come Home to Mama,' brings her [...]

Sister of Rufus (you know him), daughter of Loudon Wainwright III (he was once the new Bob Dylan, but she doesn't like him) and the late Kate McGarrigle (respected Canadian folksinger and songwriter). Rufus and Loudon are the best-known of the clan, but this show was very much about the girls, and motherhood. As well as Everything Wrong , a song from Martha to her own son, the set included a few anecdotes and reminiscences about her Mum, and a couple of songs written by her: including the very beautiful set-closer [...]

The past three years have been fraught with incident for Martha Wainwright . In November 2009, she gave birth to a son, Archangelo, after a life-threatening labour. Shortly after, her mother, the revered folk singer Kate McGarrigle passed away. These events are felt intimately on new album, Come Home to Mama . With grief and joy in rapid succession forming a backdrop to the record's conception, Come Home To Mama is understandably arresting in its emotional intensity. First single, the stunning 'Proserpina', is particularly loaded; it was the last song penned by McGarrigle [...]
Northern Irish rockers Ash will be performing at Johnny Brenda's tonight. The alt-rock/pop four-piece from Downpatrick has been performing since 1992 with some change in their lineup over the years (including English singer Charlotte Hatherley, Bloc Party's Russell Lissack, and LaFaro's Alan Lynn). In 2011 most of the band's performances included "Best of" sets as ... Continue reading
