AUDIO: yU – I Believe ft. Duff yU - I Believe ft. Duff For Martin Luther King Jr. Day , yU wanted to share a song that relates his vision of belief. "Today's a special day in remembrance of a man that resembled the spirit of a leader at a time where many just followed suit & went with the tide. Another example of how powerful the spoken word can be, changing the lives of many by something as simple as a thought; amplified by the tone of his voice. When iIm onstage, sometimes I think [...]

Video: Kanye West recites poem for Martin Luther King Jr….when he was 12 It was reported today that 200,000 documents regarding the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. were recently made available online. Here's one more for the books. Yesterday, the internet received footage of Kanye West going in on some verses at Chicago's Double Door from 1996. Let's take it back 6 years earlier when a 12-year-old Kanye dedicated a poem to Martin Luther King Jr. entitled "His Name Is Love". Any other day this would wind up being passed around through back channels, but it's especially appropriate, and [...]

Mavis Staples: 'We're Not All the Way Where Dr. King Wanted to Take Us'

Filed under: News , Exclusive , Spinner Interview , Q + A Chris Strong Mavis Staples began her singing career in 1950 as a God-fearing gospel belter alongside her sisters in a family band. But as America began confronting its racial demons in the following decade, the Staple Singers joined the uprising. Roebuck "Pops" Staples, a close friend of Martin Luther King, Jr and the [...]

Ron Paul Poetry: On The Legacy Of A Civil Rights Hero

by Rep. Ron Paul, Republican dedicated to memories of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Ronald Reagan Boy, it sure burns me to have a national holiday for that pro-communist philanderer Martin Luther King. I voted against this outrage time and time again as a Congressman. What an infamy that Ronald Reagan approved it! We can thank him for our annual Hate Whitey Day. ------------------------------ --------------- This poem was originally published as an article by Ron Paul [...]

The Decline of the Public African-American

The Decline of the Public African-American My mother, was always one to educate me early on in age about those who came before me of my race/culture, and how their voices shaped America. I was exposed to many of great men and woman who accomplished great things despite adversity. People like Sojourner Truth, Huey Newton, and Marcus Garvey whose stories were well-known as Abraham Lincoln. These were the very faces that spoke for those unheard voices. But today I am asking to what avail, I might ask. These public faces stood for more than we might ever understand. Yet a lot of those who benefit [...]

Martin Luther King Day and his Drum Major Instinct speech.

Martin Luther King Day and his Drum Major Instinct speech. Today is one of the most important days of the year in this country as we celebrate one of the greatest of all Americans, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. <a href=" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M artin_Luther_King,_Jr." target="_blank" From President Obama today : Dr. King obviously had a dream of justice and equality in our society, but he also had a dream of service, that you could be a drum major for service, that you could lead by giving back to our communities. And that's what this program [...]

I Have a Dream

I've probably posted MLK's "I Have a Dream" speech every year since the site began. No reason not to keep doing so, as it remains just as moving and powerful in 2011 as it was in 1963. Click here to view the embedded video. Also: Have to be honest, for a second. I'm not really digging Google's doodle tribute to MLK , which seems sort of pedantic and effortless on their part. Especially given how amazing their recent efforts have been. Thoughts?

Music Video: Jasiri X - Dr. King's Nightmare: Dr. King Responds to Glenn Beck

Dr. King's Nightmare
Via Jasiri X : "This was part of a song Me and Paradise the Arkitech had intended to do as coverage of Glenn Beck's "Restoring Honor" rally, as well as Al Sharpton's "Reclaim the Dream" rally. The plan was to spit a rhyme from both perspectives then end with a verse from Dr. King himself. We eventually decided to scrap the idea and concentrate on our next video. However, this article by Legendary Hip-Hop Journalist Davey D inspired me to record my Dr. King verse to Kayne West 's "Power" and create [...]

Music Video: DayOneRap - MLK (BMF Remix)

DayOne - MLK (BMF Remix)
" I think I'm Malcolm X, Martin Luther... " - I LOVE this! I never got around to posting Rick Ross' "BMF" track which is currently running the streets (and even more amazingly the airwaves) this summer. Might still do it but then again, I have an issue with a song extolling the lives of notorious drug lords and gang leaders like the BMF founder Demetrius "Big Meech" Flenory and Gangster Disciples leader Larry Hoover of Chicago, especially one by a proven congenital liar like Ross, no matter how good he may be in pure artistic [...]

Via Ivan - who, and not to get off on a tangent but I gotta comment, is inexplicably catching flack from Eskay of Nah Right and his minions for calling him out on his weak-sauce acceptance of Shyne 's BS justification for all these wack records he's been dropping. MLK's Last Speech

Click here to view the embedded video. He was, sadly, assassinated the very next day in a Memphis motel. You wonder how the Civil Rights leader, dead at 39, would feel about Obama being elected president if he were still alive at 81. But more to the point, it also feels like Martin Luther King's legacy has already been, I don't know, forgotten? I mean, not exactly, but he's the most singular icon for civil rights and yet, as far as we've come in race relations, it never seems like we've come [...]
