Originally released in 1969, Marva Whitney's James Brown produced LP It's My Thing plays out something like the JBs fronted by Betty Davis. Brown's leading female vocalist during the late 60s, Whitney expertly works the material here (arranged and co-written by Brown, backed by the JBs) as only someone who spent time in Brown's touring [...]

Another "I can take a hint" selection. This amazing slice of funk turned up not too long ago on one of the music blogs I follow - Funky16Corners - and then an Australian friend mentioned it to me. He'd been going to see Whitney last year when she collapsed with a stroke while on tour down under. Marva Whitney, "It's My Thing" (1969) Whitney is "considered by many funk enthusiasts to be one of the "rawest" and "brassiest" music divas" ( Wikipedia ) - [...]

We knew Xaphoon Jones first as the producer and the sampling mastermind behind the quickly rising Chiddy Bang. Chiddy Bang owe most of the publicity they get to the tight, slick samples this guy has crafted for them. Like a musical pickpocket, Xaphoon Jones showed us that he has an ear for contemporary music and making it work in unconventional environments. With his debut eponymous mixtape, Xaphoon pushes passed the boundaries we thought he had and dips into soulful Motown favorites, East Coast Rap, and Reggae. The Xaphoon Jones Mixtape Vol. 1 introduces [...]

The funk revival has been going on for longer than a decade. It's been a largely urban affair, featuring sophisticates in the big cities rehashing that brief period, say 1966 to 1975, when funk was deep and the drum breaks were sick. Since then, funk revival bands have started trickling into the mainstream. Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings jammed on late night talk shows; Grupo Fantasma nearly got a Grammy. Funk revival has paid its dues. The movement has cred.

I've been thinking a lot about a response to a comment I left over at The World Forgot about favorite songs, and how differently, if asked what our favorites are, music bloggers answer that question. I came to the conclusion that, while I like having twenty different favorites every week, I'm missing most of the the commonality of music is lost when my conversations with friends go as such: "Hey man, who are you listening to these days?" "Just a couple of bands this week that I really like: Insert Band Names ." [...]

I have no idea where this is, but I am SO there. I smell a roadtrip coming. Srsly. This place is a sort of Mecca. Just listen. Then take a sledgehammer to your Rihanna* CDs. Yeah, it's that simple. Betty Everett is better known for "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)", but this track, co-written by Carole King , has been covered by the likes of Lulu , Dusty Springfield , Helen Reddy and King herself. I have all of those, but this [...]

I'm sure I've covered this before, but certain things bear repeating, and I've kind of tied myself up on another draft post that I need to step back from for a few days before it eats me alive. When I'm trying to track down Matt Bianco songs there must be something wrong with me. I'll end up on Saturday Superstore with precocious kids telephoning to call me a wanker. Anyway, Marva Whitney - Unwind Yourself , a James Brown vocalist, but we're more interested in the Saxophone sample that led to DJ Mark The 45 King - [...]
Marva Whitney - Ball Of Fire While we're on the Northern Soul tip, here's another favourite. This one is not for the dancers, but I love it for its all out epicness, big horns and building, increasingly impassioned vocals. Like my previous Mary Love posting, this was also released on James Brown's King records. It was a B-Side to the better known (and fantasticlally titled) 'Its My Thing (You Can't Tell Me Who To Sock It To')'. This one cost me a fiver, which was money well spent. [...]
Marva Whitny (with James Brown) - Sunny A first post from me for a fair old while... I'm in Bali at the UN climate negotiations. Sounds like a cushy little number, but in reality its been 12 hour days, sweaty crevices and the briefest glimpse of a beach one time in between the hotel and the conference centre, which is at a posh resort development funded by the World Bank that involved destroying a local reef ecosystem. I just want to flag up to people that anyone [...]
Adventures in digging through the virtual crates, no real theme for today as I don't seem to have been suitably inoculated against Hip House and the trip through Deep Heat & Warehouse Raves is a dangerous place for the unwise. Firstly, and in the running for some of the worst crimes against children's television, Eurobop featuring the Rainbow Crew : Raynboe . There's a video interview with the Rainbow crew over at youtube which talks about why they did it, but I think Shaun Ryder probably slipped Zippy a little something when they appeared [...]

'If you don't get yourself together and try to understand,' I told myself, 'that Friday is Funday, and it won't stay fun unless you maintain it.' But don't call it a comeback, I've been here for years. Just haven't posted anything here for quite a while. Marva Whitney is as great a start as I could come up with. Until next Funday... In the case of James Brown 's death, I'm on Stage Three: Bargaining . "Oh, benevolent all-knowing Being" , my tearful negotiations would begin, "How about we offer you a different but infinitely less-talented past-it performer like John Cougar Mellencamp or Carlos Santana to kill instead?" The sadness is multiplied when you realize we now have nobody to pen triumphant funk credos extolling the strength and dignity of can-do self-reliance. You know the types of songs I mean: those sassy pumped-up tunes like Brown's own [...]
