Carrie Brownstein had uncovered our additional Spells songs that did not make it on to The Age of Backwards and she has posted them on her NPR blog. read more

Carrie Brownstein's interview with Pitchfork today gave all Sleater-Kinney fans the crumb they're been looking for since they announced their hiatus in 2006. Pitchfork : Finally, I have to ask: Any possibility of a Sleater-Kinney reunion at any point? CB : [laughs] [pauses] Yeah, I don't think we're ruling it out. But it's not going to be any time soon. We probably wouldn't use the word "reunion" [laughs]. We would say that the hiatus is off. It's just semantics, but [...]
Former Sleater-Kinney bassist and current NPR uber-blogger Carrie Brownstein has posted four previously unreleased tracks that she recorded in 2000. Brownstein recorded the songs with former Helium singer Mary Timony under the name The Spells. All four songs are being streamed on Brownstein's Monitor Mix blog here . Two song are being made available for free download for the next two weeks. You can get your MP3 of "Bat Vs. Bird" here , and "Antarctica" here . [...]
Former Sleater-Kinney member Carrie Brownstein announced on her NPR Monitor Mix blog that she is streaming four songs and offering up two MP3 downloads that are the results of an 8 year old recording session she and Mary Timony [who was a member of Helium, one of my favorite bands] had in Olympia in 2000. [...]
In a development that raises today from "OK mainly because I made that 50 Cent burrito Photoshop" to "totally fantastic," Sleater-Kinney's Carrie Brownstein has posted a few previously unreleased tracks by The Spells, her project with fellow axe-wielder Mary Timony, to her blog. Get 'em before she takes 'em down (in two weeks)! [ Monitor Mix ]

In the late 1990s, my friend Mary Timony and I started a side project called The Spells. We put out one EP, played one show in Olympia and never did much else. Except that we had plans. We always talked about writing a full-length record, sending song ideas back and forth via computer and recording the album in chunks when we had time -- when we weren't on tour with our other bands. But that never happened. We did, however, manage to start the process. In the summer of 2000, we recorded four songs in [...]

LA-based noise-poppers, The Happy Hollows [ Official Site , Myspace ], are coming here to New York in a few weeks for CMJ , so I thought we should take a second to pass along some of the new info from their upcoming EP, Imaginary . The Happy Hollows are an infectious trio, one that will surely score big with the kids and folks packed into the Blender Theater that night, but don't take my word for it. Come grab some mp3s and read more info [...]

Mary Timony is the sort of musician who has been a part of so many projects that it's hard to pick two! Autoclave seem like the obvious choice but Helium really did it for me. I got on board with Pirate Prude and they never lost me. One of my most fond memories is going to see Helium with my friend T at Bottom Of The Hill in San Francisco. It was one of those nights when everything worked out - the show was sold out so we arrived very early to make sure we got in. Having [...]

You know, Mary Timony . He lium. Mary is still going strong, still telling us about the world, still giving us little glimpes into her soul, into her life, combining her raw talent these days with the experience that comes from years of making the music that she makes. The Mary Timony Band says it all. She is the band. www.killrockstars.com www.marytimony.com

Today, the much anticipated new Wilco allbum ( Sky Blue Sky ) arrives to us a week early. Not that it was necessary, considering the Elliott Smith rarities compilation ( New Moon ) from Kill Rock Stars hits the digital shelf today along with new releases from Bjork, Mary Timony and Rufus Wainwright (also a week early.) Add to that advance singles from White Stripes , Interpol and Black Francis , and you've got yourself a fine week [...]
Sweet intricate melodies and the male and female vocals of Solon Bixler and Rachel Stolte playing counterpoint to one another soak through this album from beginning to end. Behind them are waves of lush orchestrated sounds that weave in and out providing a large, loud but crystal clear backdrop. Welcome to Trading Twilight for Daylight , the debut album from Great Northern . Solon and Rachel, long time friends from Silver lake, CA who had both played in separate bands previously, formed the nucleus of the band, and later brought aboard drummer Davey Latter [...]
Ex-Helium frontwoman Mary Timony's sparky CMJ set on Friday had one flaw: It was too brief. We were especially excited to learn that the lineup she's currently playing with is, like her old band, a trio that pumps out bottom-heavy arrangements, allowing her incredible guitar playing to shine. (Honestly, why do so few people point out how great her guitar technique is? Is it a Juliana Hatfield -esque prejudice of some kind?) Mary Timony - 9 x 3 [MP3] Helium - XXX [YouTube] T I M O [...]
Lo-Fi-Fnk @ Fontana's 11/3/2006 City / Adore / Wake Up / The End Lo-Fi-Fnk "City" - Lo-Fi-Fnk's fourth US show was in the basement venue of a bar called Fontana's, as part of the Brooklyn Vegan 's series of CMJ day shows. The group only played four songs, and unfortunately "What's On Your Mind?" and "Unighted" were not among them, but they were fun and adorable nonetheless. The three of them are in their [...]
I'm back on Contrast Podcast this week. This time the theme was "Handclapping", which is my absolute favourite element for a song. My selection for the theme was "I Fire Myself" by Mary Timony, from... **Click on the link to read the full post, download mp3s, and comment.**
