Mas y Mas were introduced to me by a certain ex-waitress-at-a-strip-club on a recent jaunt down to Richmond. Let me set the scene: walking to the gas station for cigarettes you might see a dude sitting on his porch blowing on his digeridoo (thusly named Digeridude), too many cute girls riding bikes to count, and if you're lucky, girlpants' good friend Will in a dress, trying in vain to score a Craigslist Missed Connection. Mas y Mas, hailing from nearby NoVA, were a perfect soundtrack to this scene. They're at once fidgety and disaffected, smart enough to [...]

Remember when I used to update with new shows and then I had a little section at the bottom that said what I was jamming to? This is that except with a small review of each artist/song. I am moving back to Kansas City next week. I will NOT be updating Pittsburgh shows anymore or keeping up with them. Instead I will start doing KC again. If you want to know about shows I have been to, go to my flickr, the photos are all there. Except not any photos from the Kim Phuc - Erase Errata - [...]

Squaaks The weather is slowly turning to what it should be for this time of year. A couple of festivals are going on and quite a few of shows are in the area over the next few days, so get out there and enjoy. Hampdenfest dominates Saturday afternoon in Baltimore. Running 11 AM until 7 PM, there are 3 stages of entertainment, along with plenty of food and vendors. Some of the artists performing are our friends Thrushes and Squaaks . Also check out Impossible Hair [...]
Photo by Bob Richards Well, this is it. The suitcase is out of the closet; the months of crusty dishes are simmering in the sink. A cold wind's already threading through the Montreal nights, confirming the creep of fall. Tomorrow, I'll be back on the Amtrak, taking in the green landscapes before they're shedding their dead leaves. After a three-month high, I've been errantly wandering this city these last few days. I've been getting all contemplative and shit, reflecting on my run here, wishing I could somehow prolong this truant [...]

MP3: Mas Y Mas - Pop Psychology NOTE: Today's contribution comes from pop princess Matt Giordano. No extra words today, fuck yeah! Mas Y Mas is a group you'll be hearing a lot of soon. Why? Because they fucking rule the school. They've been playing sporadically all over the East Coast the past couple of years and I hear a national gash slaying extravaganza is in the works. Fathers, lock your wives and daughters ( and possibly mothers ) because when these lads hit [...]

It's sticky sweaty slippery stupidly hot outside right now. The wind is moving the trees, my eyes are telling me so. However, that same breeze is a curse. It's as if someone has left the oven door open. It's like that surge of superheated air on the edges of an expanding forest fire. It only makes you sweat more and desire only to be completely submerged in liquid. I am the world's largest salt lick. Bring on the livestock, their tongues a-lapping. Mas y Mas 's new record Proud Sponsors of Pepsi sounds like [...]

Detroit Red Wings are one win from securing the Stanley Cup. Game 4 should be interesting. The Penguins tried to pick up the pace, but Red Wings did it better. John W. Adkisson | The Flint Journal Mas y Mas - You Can't Play Without Ice
Even by my anemic standards, I should probably be covering concerts I attend less than three months after they happen. But a dropped laptop and a transcontinental voyage later, I'm here to make up for my lapses. Good thing too, because I really can't get over how great Mas y Mas is. Out of nowhere, they're swiftly becoming one of my favorite bands. Since being reunited with it, I've been spinning their full-length Proud Sponsors of Pepsi faithfully. I'm also revisiting their earlier EP, Latin Outreach , when I [...]

So it seems kinda bizarre and surreal to think I've been working on this project for a year already. One random Thursday in California 365 afternoons ago, I'd had the idea to typing up the contents of a mixtape I'd just compiled and blasting it into cyberspace. What began as a goof, a high-tech storehouse for whatever trivia happened to be pinballing through my brain, quickly evolved into a genuine passion. Tossed-off entries soon stretched into five- or six-hour writing sessions. Newly beholden to something, I'd leave parties early to toil over posts or curtail nights out to [...]

Photo by studiosweetstudio Chicago had Bellow and Sandburg. Paris got Miller and Seurat. But DC, those lucky, non-President-voting-for bastards, get more than they deserve in the madcap art-rock anarchy of Mas Y Mas. Bopping and bashing their way through their new full-length, Proud Sponsors of Pepsi , Mas Y Mas dish out more nonsequitur shoutouts, absurd detours and flippant pronouncements than a C-SPAN-watching marathon. Throw in a tongue so firmly in cheek that it leaves a bruise and an unwavering commitment to revelry and [...]

Mas Y Mas knocked up pop and coked up rock; they hotboxed funk and outfoxed punk. They shot the sheriff, the deputy and Mr. Burns, and somehow still found the time to throw a house party where the girls are down to their bras by eleven. Yep, they're pretty much goofy lunatics, firing out music that's raucous, ecstatic and one high-pitched yelp away from ridonculous. In other words, get ready to flush your Adderall and hook up the pony keg. The Unicorns-times-two have just arrived and they're not leaving till the whole block is rocked, stoned and totally TPed.
