Masakari and Alpinist When: Monday, August 8, 2011 Where: Blast-O-Mat, Denver, CO With: Beneath, Edge Breaker I've driven between Denver and Chicago before. Fun, joyous, enriching - that stretch is none of those things. If you're without podcasts, music, or one hell of a storytelling passenger on I-80 and most of I-76, boredom will cause the abyss to stare back at you. At least I could
This is last free download thing we'll post today - we promise. Southern Lord have put together a killer 20-track mixtape to mark The Power Of The Riff, the tour/festival-thing they've got set to tear up the West Coast of the USA later this month. Why should this be of interest of anyone here in [...]
Our love for Cleveland antitheist hardcore band Masakari just won't quit. They won our hearts with last year's The Prophet Feeds, and proceeded to beat the tar out of us at this year's SXSW. So when Masakari contacted us for premiering a new song, were we to turn them down? Hell no! They will release a split with German hardcore group Alpinist on August 3 through Halo of Flies, who are now
Cleveland combo Masakari had their way with us at SXSW, and they're about to make the rest of the country their bitch too come August. This time, they'll be joined by Germans Alpinist, yet another acquisition in Southern Lord's "We Do Fast Stuff Too" division. If you went crazy for Maskari's metallic, melodic hardcore like we did (and in fact, still are), Alpinist will certainly be in your
Crustcake, represented by the intrepid Andrew Wilhelm and Van Damned, spent four days in Austin, Texas, at South By Southwest, one of the world's largest, film, interactive and music festivals. Between the two, they saw 49 bands, ate 10 tacos, four slices of pizza, four gyros, three bratwurst, and drank 52 beers, five whiskey and cokes, five rum and gingers and exactly one shot of tequila. They
If I had polled our writing staff - prior to writing this piece - on what our collective favorite band is from Southern Lord's recent singing slew of hardcore, grindcore and punk, I believe Masakari would emerge the overall victor (except for Andy who is somewhere in Texas still listening to The Secret). Last year's The Prophet Feeds was a real favorite with us. So it is with real excitement that

Well, it's that time of year again. While the rest of America is sucking down chili-cheese fries and getting sun-burnt at various over-priced McDisneyMarts on spring break, the world's biggest film, music and interactive festival culminates in a three-day orgy of beer, bands, bratwursts and bruises. Yer boys Andrew Wilhelm and Van Damned will sacrificing their eardrums and livers to bring you the

Every year or so seems to bring with it a New Wave of something as kids grow up and yearn for the music of their formative years. Think about it: In the past decade, we've seen New Waves of American Heavy Metal (yuck!), Crossover Thrash (re-thrash?), Progressive Technical Metal (got djent?) and Old School Death Metal (meh). This year was no exception, seeing a slew of releases from not one but
Lists are very much self indulgent, but if you don't indulge in anything, you are boring. Some folks indulge in foie gras, some in cheap hookers - I indulge in stirring the tempest of the internets. It's our vices that make us people. Without further ado, here is my list of the ten best records this year. If you agree or disagree (my preference), holla in the comments. Have a trill new year.10~

One of my Needle Drops just turned me onto this band, and I have no clue how I manged to miss 'em since they're on Southern Lord . I can't lie: These guys are louder than the average band I'm posting about on here, so get ready for a violent blast of tooth-gnashed horror. These guys play a speedy brand of hardcore punk that sports some heavy breakdowns and thick guitar tones. If you were digging on that Nails album I talked up earlier this [...]
Masakari's The Prophet Feeds is one of our favorite records released this year. In less than 30 minutes, it's the right blend of His Hero is Gone, Japanese D-Beat, and serious political angst. While the band says they won't be touring again until next year, Pittsburgh hardcore band Heartless, which features guitarist Joe Yanick and bassist Adam Thomas of Masakari, will be going out on tour next
Download: Masakari - "XVI Rapid Dominance" [M4A]Is Greg Anderson getting nostalgic for his days in Engine Kid? Based on Southern Lord's recent signings, perhaps so. He's almost got the market cornered on ripping, crusty, metallic hardcore -- The Accüsed, Black Breath, The Secret,Trap Them's latest EP, Nails, and best of all, Cleveland's Masakari. Their latest, The Prophet Feeds, wraps up in less

MASAKARI is a an ancient Japanese Battle axe, it is fitting that the band named themselves after a weapon used by warrior monks. Playing a blend of apocalyptic crust and D-Beat in the vein of G.I.S.M, His Hero Is Gone and Discharge. They released an amazing 73 EDEN COMPROMISED on Halo of Flies which I strongly recommend you pick up. They recently signed to Southern Lord and will be releasing a full length titled The Prophet Feeds . Download Eden Compromised below. The brutal, metallic, crust punk attack of Masakari 's debut album shall ravage the world on June 8th, 2010, via Southern Lord Recordings . Following a 7" on Halo of Flies Records, the quartet have taken their rage to the next level and constructed their debut full-length "The Prophet Feeds," bearing 10 tracks showcasing the band's elevated songwriting, as well as their increasing hatred for governmental corruption, greed and atrocities against humanity. The record was engineered by Bill Korecky (Incantation, Keelhaul, Integrity) and recorded at Mars Studio in the band's home town of Cleveland.
