Maserati / Inventions For The New Season ( Temporary Residence ) It's probably not a stretch to suggest that the members of Athens, Georgia's Maserati are into cars. Beyond the band name, their new album could be the soundtrack for the car selection screen in Gran Turismo or whatever the gold standard is for video game console car racing titles is. It builds slowly but urgently, and when it finally explodes out of the pole position it leaves nothing but [...]

Release Date 06.19.07 I remember when I first got Maserati's first album, The Language of Cities , in 2002. At the time, I was listening to as much "post-rock" as any human can endure. Mogwai and Godspeed You Black Emperor were definitely in my Top 5 favorite artists and I was totally impressed by the complexities and uniqueness of Cities . I could easily listen to the entire discography in a day of any one of these kinds of bands and be totally happy. After a while though something happened, I [...]

For those of you who never made it to Sea Level - Art Brut was there I know this is way late, but in the interest of completenesss (and hopefully turning you onto things you might have missed)... Top Five Most Interesting Releases: Art Brut : It's a Bit Complicated (Downtown) - The second record from the cheeky Brits who critics love. Lead singer Eddie Argos is an average dude who talk/sings about making mixing tapes, making out and having fun. If you've had it with overly earnest bands [...]

Here's some somewhat new music from largely unknown bands that you may not have heard of yet. Have a go. 65daysofstatic This guitar-driven post-rock band from Sheffield, England, is poised to garner greater acclaim after a supposedly scorching performance at SXSW that earned them a slot opening for alternative stalwarts The Cure on their fall tour. Their third album, The Destruction of Small Ideas , was released this spring. Buy it here . Oh, and [...]
Ben from art collective Paper Rad is behind this interstellar animated clip for the Mary Timony Band's first clip from their Kill Rock Stars LP The Shapes We Make , in which a UFO gives life to Mary's bedroom toys (a green Hershey kiss shaped guy and a boxy thing). Said toys are wary of the UFO (of course), and so they and Mary take off through the woods. Meanwhile, the angry UFO enlargens a bumblebee, upon which Mary, the Kiss, and the Box escape, off to the sanctuary of a mountain cave. The end destination is Fantastic City, [...]

photo courtesy of MySpace Feeling like the onslaught of new music this year is never ending? Last year was a relative desert of desert island discs - we've probably had more great new releases so far this year than all of 2006 put together. While it's not looking like we can add Magnetic Fields (2008) to that list, and it seems doubtful that Radiohead will make it through the gate on time, there's still a lot more to come. And this week's offerings add more indecision to your ongoing "best of the year" list. [...]
Been a while. I know. Work has been all-consuming for nearly a month but now, finally with a chance to exhale, I can turn to the accumulating stacks and chose from a number of new gems to post for you. So why not start the return to posting off on the right foot, with a new track from the newest album from Athens, Georgia's Maserati . After moving from labels and replacing their drummer (Gerhardt Fuchs of !!!, Turing Machine, LCD Soundsystem, The Juan Maclean), the instrumental quartet is back with a clearly evolved sound and a perfectly fitting [...]

Maserati - "12/16" (Temporary Residence Ltd. 2007) Maserati - Inventions for the New Season / Temporary Residence Ltd. There is a moment on the three-way split Maserati did with fellow Athens, GA residents Cinemechanica and We Versus the Shark in 2004 where you aren't in love with this band. It is the moment before you hit play on "Towers Were Wires." It is also the last moment I can remember thinking that Maserati sounded like a really good name for a band and not just a car company. [...]
[mp3] Maserati - 12/16 Maserati, in their own words, "is a son of a bitch hell-bent on dismembering every last vestige of the so-called indie rock establishment before it can drive the last nail in its messenger-bag-wearing coffin." Read: A loud-ass post-rock / psychedelic / kraut-rock / prog-punk band on Temporary Residence from Brooklyn and Athens, GA. Numerous sources (including their own label) cite Maserati as a band that has brought psychedelic stoner rock into the 21st century, stripping it of its pomposity (and vocals). The band's bio says, "this is [...]
This extended mix of psychedelic, ambient, noise, and done (a.k.a not rock) was inspired by the freak out work outs by Dungen, ILM's ongoing discussion on what's new in the category of weird sh*t , and my own desire to find more sounds that can't be described with the combination of these two words: indie and pop. It started out as the traditional four song rock block, went way beyond that to a mix that stretched out way past the hour mark, then pared itself back down to a more manageable size. As for what [...]

Athens, GA Inventions For The New Season is the new one from Maserati and it'll be out in May. I'm certain this one's going to be instant classic among all post-rock lovers. This lead track is a long one, but it's so worth every second of it. "Inventions" Maserati on MySpace

Lil' Kim: "Lighters Up (Welcome To Brooklyn)" (download) Maserati: "Moving With Heavy Hearts" (download) The Cars: "Moving In Stereo" (download) Hello, faithful readers! If you're wondering why you haven't heard from me in awhile, it's because I'm moving. I put a deposit on an apartment this past weekend, and signed the lease this week. I'm going to try and put a nice big entry on here for you tomorrow, so that you'll be entertained while I move four years worth of clothing, furniture, [...]
