So last night Mason Jennings played at the Wonder Ballroom and it was the first Mason Jennings show I missed since first seeing him open for Jack Johnson in Nov. 2001. Well, the first show when he wasplaying in a city I was living in. If I had seen every single Mason concert since 2001, well, that would just be slightly crazy. When I woke up this morning, I imagine I had similar feelings to when Cal Ripken woke up the next morning after involuntarily ending his games played streak. A big of sadness, [...]

Woodshed Films is the surf film collaborative through which filmmaker Chris Malloy --along with brother Emmett Malloy, Tim Lynch, Jack Johnson, and other artists)-- have turned out artistic surf culture films like Thicker Than Water, Sprout , Brokedown Melody and Shelter . In addition to turning an exacting eye towards breathtaking natural cinematography, their films capture a raw and pure excitement for surfing that I can catch onto even though those damn surfboards have never cooperated with my specific self. [...]

Mason Jennings is one of my favorite acoustic singer songwriters. The Minneapolis native released his seventh album In The Ever back in May 2008. The title came from his son referring to where he was before birth as "In the ever". His previous CD Boneclouds was one of my favorite albums of 2006. Jennings, who was born in Hawaii, released the new album on Jack Johnson' s Brushfire Records label. He mixes folk, rock, and some [...]

I was recently turned on to a pretty decent electronic-pop duo from New York called The Ropes . The first song of theirs I checked out was I Don't Like to Get Dirty from their Cry to the Beat EP . "You can all go fuck yourselves/You can all go burn in hell" Sharon Shy gently croons in the song's opening lines and I am immediately taken aback and sucked in at the same time. [...]
The sixth album from Hawaiian-born singer-songwriter Mason Jennings is a bit of a treat. In The Ever is varied and well-written, a patchwork of solid, well put together songs which together encompass humour, romance and tragedy. It opens with "Never Knew Your Name" and "Something About Your Love", which is possibly unwise as they're the two most straightforward and predictable songs on offer here. They're satisfying enough, but they're not a patch on the much stronger ...

I'm now four days removed from this year's Lollapalooza, and I find myself thanking God that nothing happened to me that would project flashbacks a la Vietnam. I still have matching bruises on my knees, albeit they are fading. My jaw, which suffered a blow from what I'm pretty sure was an unintentional fist thrown, has recovered. I'm now writing this finally, days later, in a car after a much-needed rest on the shores of New Jersey. You could now refer to this part of my vacation as Part One Million: The Sickening. My throat, sore [...]

So once upon a time I was interested in all kinds of mythology and would collect songs and build whole playlists with that mythological thread, and now it's paying off! (A lot of these are instrumentals, actually.) The Appleseed Cast - Poseidon A pretty mellow instrumental track (even though it has about two lines of vocals in there in the middle). It almost sounds like there are waves in the background for a bit in the beginning. Way Out West - Apollo [...]
I've always liked Mason Jennings. And by like him I mean that I enjoyed his company from time to time on a long road trip mix disc or in passing on shuffle. I will admit right here, right now though that I've never LOVED him. I always found him to be fairly vanilla. And there's nothing wrong with vanilla...don't get me wrong...I'm ALL about me some vanilla from time to time but on the whole,

Mason Jennings – In The Ever What makes Mason Jennings' music so original and good is an element of songwriting that is often scarce today, honesty. Mason seems like a guy who would be the first to admit that he doesn't have answers to all of life's greatest questions, which is why he is able to masterfully convey his search for peace of mind is the songs he creates. In The Ever is a refreshing musical experience, fully immersed in the rough [...]

Mason Jennings is a veteran US songwriter that's coming into his own. Now signed to Brushfire, his new album 'In The Ever' has all the hallmarks of an American classic. Singer/songwriter Mason Jennings has long been one of the best-kept secrets in American music - but not for much longer. In his adopted home of Minneapolis his shows have recently drawn as many as 3,000 fans, and he was hand-picked last year to perform two Dylan songs, in the recent movie ' I'm Not There ', as lip-synched by Christian Bale in the [...]

Most of the music that's recently been added to my library has actually been older stuff (thanks to the folks at Cover Lay Down , Setting The Woods On Fire , and Ceci N'est Pas un Blog ) - Buddy Holly, The Beatles, Creedence, Emmylou........ i have, however, picked up a couple new discs - some in the mail and some digitally. Here's some of the best new additions: mp3: [...]
...and no, we're not talking about the chirpety-chirp of birdies here. We all have our summer playlists that we whip out once the sun starts melting the ice in hopes that our cheerful, upbeat tunes will expediate the process. Unfortunately for us, Mother Nature doesn't always take it kindly when we're telling her what's-what and when to do it, but that's life, right? Here's a couple of songs from each of us that we rock to whilst kickin' it in the flip flops. And no, no Sublime allowed - I'm sure your local alternative rock [...]
