Tuesday, December 2, 2008 There were no comments yesterday so I'm going to assume that you're all with me and not appalled to the point of silence. Here's part two. Enjoy. - 40 Through 31 - 40) : Times New Viking - Drop Out : While I find their album to be overly loud and cluttered at times, I really love their fuzzed-out style when it's working like it is in here, where it sounds [...]

Since we didn't post any Thanksgiving playlist, as we do for many holidays, such as Arbor Day, Memorial Day Weekend, Halloween and many others, we honed this for something almost better than Thanksgiving itself - Thanksgiving leftovers. Two days after our stomachs have finally settled, the theme for this list isn't anything really, just a bunch of great songs we've been meaning to write about, yet have been losing track of during this holiday season. However, if you're looking for a Thanksgiving Playlist after the fact, we recommend heading over to Speed of [...]

Mason Proper fuses several styles on their most recent project, Olly Oxen Free, which was released on Dovecote Records. Their mellow, yet furrowing, rock guitars are ambient and lively. The band uses many obscure rhythms on the album; the drums are carefully crafted, utilizing an ensemble of different percussive mediums. The vocalist has a dynamic voice and chooses some eerie lyrical concepts. On that is particularly entertaining on "In the Mirror." The song is filled with atmospheric auxiliary sounds that waft through the audio and make it more valuable with every listen. The song is really a break in the [...]

Mason Proper's own Jonathan Visger recently struck out on his own to channel the sound of Mason Proper through the big beats and breaks Hip Hop production. It was his intention to get under the skin of the hip hop approach to music and recreate some of those driving moments where the breakbeats drop and sound really, really good. The beats here definitely have some bite to them, but it's the musical textures and Visger's entertaining lyrics that demand all the attention. A whimsical guitar melody kicks off opening [...]

Like the title says, 2008 was pretty good for Mason Proper. Their new album "Olly Oxen Free" got great press and is sure to be on a lot of year end lists, possibly even mine! They got good reviews from The Tripwire at CMJ, played cool live sessions at WOXY, Daytrotter, and My Old Kentucky Blog on Sirius. Their video for their song 'Lock and Key' is up for Subterranean's Best of 2008. To watch the video, click the link below! To vote click here. Their album was a pretty solid, consistent record that surprised me. It was [...]

DATELINE: CAMBRIDGE Mason Proper finished off their four show 'mini-tour' with Cloud Cult and Exit Clov at The Middle East last night. I really am too tired to give you a full run-down, but the show was predictably awesome. MP are easily one of the best live bands in the country right now, thanks in no small part to the strength of the new album, "Olly Oxen Free." Mason Proper played [...]

The FOTLers are now selling the album at their live gigs (UKers get on this). More album deets are here . This is [...]
In recent years the idea of playing full, classic albums has gone from a sweet idea to a fully realized and usually pretty amazing experience. Bands as diverse as Mission of Burma, GZA, Sonic Youth, and Tortoise have done the full album thing and it's seems to be getting more and more common as the propensity towards indie music grows. Last night Mason Proper added their name to the list of bands

Mason Proper performed the Olly Oxen Free album in it's entirety last night at The Bowery Ballroom . You can listen to the whole album here (do it right now). Please note, their atmospheric indie pop is slightly more revved up and rockin' when performed live. Next time these boys are in town, make sure you get off yer ass and see them even if it is on a Tuesday night. Some crappy pictures I took are... here . I have a feeling there will be some video [...]

It says a lot about a band's confidence when they opt to choose the most natural settings possible for the recording of their music. Recording studios with precisely defined dimensions and millionaire producers have certainly spawned many classic records that are today considered touchstones, but when the level of songwriting is impressive enough so that certain effects and enhancements are not required to manufacture a classic release, I can't help but admire the sheer quality of something so raw and undeniably ingenious. By this type of production I am not referring to scratchy lo-fi basement recordings where a handful of [...]

Who : Mason Proper again. What : I think I like this track a little better than ' Lock And Key '. Haunting. Song : Fog . A Live video version here .
Who: Cloud Cult + Exit Clov + Mason Proper Where: Bowery Ballroom When: 8pm Tickets: $15 What to Expect: Opening act Mason Proper is the main reason I'll be heading to Bowery tonight. Their sophomore release, Olly Oxen Free, has been in constant rotation on my iPod since its release and the post-pop sound of it has been something different for my ears each time I put it on. It is a really solid

Monday: No Age @ Market Hotel 8pm $9 Due to a busy, and drunk, beginning to the weekend I skipped out on last night's No Age and Titus Andronicus performance at Santo's Party House. I know I should totally lose my indie rock card for missing that show but I get a chance to make up for it tonight by heading to Market Hotel to see them. I probably won't though. I'm an old foggie you know. No Age -
