This lady fronted band has an interesting take on the Bowie classic. With an icy, dark, echoing electronica vibe, the song slinks around in the shadows. Enjoy. "Lady Stardust" Masonic and the originals "Lady Stardust" David Bowie "Lady Stardust (Demo)" David Bowie Official MySpace Buy

Martin Solveig has been on our radar since day one of the VR experiment. Born Martin Pechandet and hailing from Paris the seminal DJ producer began his musical journey with releases on his own Mixture records label in 1998 and having thought he'd acheived his ultimate goal with the success of the 'Heart Of Africa' track that was all the rage in 2002, he has shed new light on the electro crowd by aligning himself with some of the best producers and hippest kids around with each new EP effort. Another producer/DJ that needs no intro [...]

Releasing a digital maxi-ep, Austin's Masonic has charmed their way into my headphones and they should be in yours as well. When you add in the vicious red faced tiger on the cover of The Human Blade (released Dec. 5th) you have a gorgeous collection of indie pop driven by the voice of Eryn Gettys. Listen to : Everytime This Happens ( mp3 ) [...]

Masonic is an Austin, Texas, indie-pop band that has been making music in the Stereolab-Yo La Tengo-Velvet Underground vein since 2002. Making good use of vintage keyboards and guitars, vinyl samples, and some tape loops, Masonic recorded The Human Blade over the summer and officially released the EP yesterday. It includes an excellent David Bowie cover of Lady Stardust. The Human Blade is the bands' follow-up to 2007's highly-acclaimed I Am Guilty Of, which was named one of 2007's Austin Top 10 release by the influential Austin Chronicle. A mellow sound and an excellent release. [...]

When Calvin Harris came to Montreal, I didn't go. I didn't go because I thought he would just perform live and not do anything I haven't already heard on his album. And he was with Chromeo . meh. Oh but what a fool I realize I was after hearing his essential mix, which is apparently what he played at his Canadian shows. Download and tracklist here . Its an amazing mix, blending heavy electro house, disco, and prog house. The first song is all it took to hook me: [...]
Whenever The Bloody Beetroots is one of the producers asked to remix an official single for an artist, it's common blog knowledge that the Bloody Beetroots remix will be the remix featured on everyone's blog. If I remember correctly from that blogging class I took in '07, this event is explained by the BBS Formula: Bloody Beetroots = Blog Hits = Blogger Self Validation. Given the BBS Formula, one can easily see why the new Bloody Beetroots remix of Cobrastyle has been everywhere the last four days. Yes, even here (I need proof of my self worth too). [...]

So about a week ago the MOS released a 3 disc mix CD entitled "Underground 2009." The mixing is quite poor unfortunately, and the track selection is what you might expect from the Ministry of Sound, and that is mainstream house hits. That being said, there are 2 tracks that are particularly catchy. The first is LSL's I Can See Stars featuring Natasha Lo. This track has been all over Pete Tong's radio programs, even capturing the much sought after "essential new track" designation. The acapella appeared on Paolo Mojo's essential mix from [...]

simply because we haven't done a covers post in some time, and because the clair and cher songs have been repeating 'round here recently, and because the new frontiers ' version of gillian welch's excellent "look at miss ohio" turned up in our box the other day, we decided that these six recordings, all of which we enjoy - if for distinct reasons - and think you will too, should be hoarded no longer. clair - outta me (bikini kills) [...]

Mason [...]

I'm only about a half year late on this "new release." Masonic, who apparently already have 3 albums out, released this album last November. I've had their e-mail in my archives and was meaning to write about it since then, so I finally am getting around to it. In the same vein as 60's girl groups crossed with lo-fi indie influences such as Yo La Tengo and Camera Obscura, this Austin five-piece have put out a lovely record. This Del Shannon cover is great, but their originals are where the real gems live. Download: Masonic - Runaway [...]

I have a thing for brothers. Who doesn't? And I promise that after listening to Masonic's latest album, Things I Am Guilty Of , you will have a thing for brothers too. The band's core trio of Mason brothers (John, Kevin, and Brian) have gone through a series of singers on their three previous offerings before finally finding the beautiful and talented Eryn Gettys as lead vocalist, whose ethereal voice hazily balances between French pop and shoegaze. Accented by master arrangements of keys and guitar, and percussion that isn't too heavy and complimentary bass lines courtesy of Trey [...]

Retro is definitely in, especially when it comes to music lately. Austin indie-pop band Masonic must have gotten the memo when it came to putting together their fourth release, Things I Am Guilty Of , which came out on the 20th. I can't tell you much about the band except that they've been around since 2002 and are apparently big in their hometown. What I can tell you is they front a very retro groovy feel to their music which reminds me of The Raveonettes if they lost their dark reverbed fetish. [...]

masonic is an independent pop band out of austin, texas, and their new lp, things i am guilty of , will be released towards the end of the month. the album's full of catchy tunes based around an electric guitar and keyboard and lead eryn gettys' faintly breathy, lower-register vocals, which well compliment the instrumental arrangements. the clubhouse leader for standout song on guilty , so far, for anyone's guess at least, is a cover of the 1961 del shannon song " runaway ," though there are any number of instantly listenable songs up & [...]
