Taken from the newly released and long-awaited album City of Black and White , first single and video by Nashville performing songwriter Mat Kearney , the instantly likeable "Closer To Love', has an addictive vocal hook buried just below the surface of the pulsing piano fray. Remember when they used to play songs like this on the radio? Ahh...nostalgia. More on City of Black and White here . Myspace Artist Site Aware
If you're going to be a Chris Martin -a-like singer/songwriter, you have to be sad. This is a hypothesis that can be proven after listening to Mat Kearney 's third album, City of Black & White , out today. Kearney returns to crooning about love and… love, after hitting it big among Grey's Anatomy TiVo-ers with his second album Nothing Left to Lose . His new effort might be tolerable if only the guy had some problems or conflicts (some addictions, maybe?) [...]

Mat Kearney's new album, City of Black and White dropped today and is available on iTunes. Having previewed a good portion of the album, I have to say its very much in line with his past albums. Because Mat is not one of my favorite songwriters but has a killer voice that keeps the songs warm and inviting I'm not overly excited about this album. On first listen, the song "Annie" came up as one of the favorite. The song is about a girl who is trying to make it on her own, leaving behind a troubled past. Kearney admits [...]

Mat Kearney's City of Black and White. The "I was having a hard time getting my thoughts organized so it looks like a bunch of random thoughts on the album" album review . In a nutshell I liked this album a lot and with 12 strong pop/rock songs the album should yield plenty of hits; starting with the current "Closer to Love" that is already on the charts. What's your Style? Mat's first album had a trademark rap/folk [...]

The team of Lucia and Jonas took in this show the other night. In what seemed to be a night for couples, the evening manifested itself into an evening of great music. (Photos by Lucia De Giovanni / Word by Jonas DiCaprio (no relation)) If you created a pie chart to represent the crowd at the Keane show last night by far the largest piece of that pie would be couples on the first, or maybe second date. The first opening band The Helio Sequence provided the perfect backdrop for these couples [...]

Mat Kearney just released the first single off of his upcoming album, "Closer to Love." In this heart-wrenching tune, Kearney reminds us that the inevitable storms in life that we all must face, should do more than simply break our spirit and bring us to our knees. This song is a reminder that God uses these so-called "tragedies" to bring us closer to Him. It is a pretty solid track, and is available for download on iTunes. Kearney seems to pick up right where he left off with this sophomore effort. He's branching out a bit on this [...]
![I already mentioned a few weeks ago how excited ... [Reunited And It Feels So Good]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1635870_lg.jpg)
I already mentioned a few weeks ago how excited I am for the forthcoming Gary Louris / Mark Olson acoustic mini-Jayhawks reunion, but if you would like to one-up my ability to see two of the band members play together live, the entire mid-'90s lineup will be performing in Minneapolis on July 10 at the Basilica Block Party , where they'll share a bill with the Black Crowes and Mat Kearney . As someone who can't immediately think of a way to justify a trip to Minnesota, I'm trying to be thankful for [...]

Keeping tradition with this blogs name, I've selected a very eclectic selection of tracks for your audio delight in this installment of Mainstream Monday . The track of the week has to be Calvin Harris ' latest single which is vastly different from 'Acceptable in the 80's' yet is still [...]

The Avett Brothers were the latest to participate in Bruce Springsteen 's " Hangin' out on E Street " video series - a clever marketing promo that features modern artists making over their favorite Boss tune. The Avetts run Springsteen classic "Glory Days" through their folk-rock filter and the result is loose, back-porch fun. The series also features covers by Josh Ritter , Wyclef Jean , Pete Yorn , The [...]

It's always great to see an artist like Mat Kearney start to get some attention. In this case it's Pick of the week at USATODAY "I guess we're all just one phone call from our knees," Mat Kearney sings in Closer to Love , the rare love song that's about more than good feelings. The first single from Kearney's City of Black & White , out May 19, takes life's storms and unexpected tragedies as the starting point for a gently reassuring [...]
Mat Kearney covering Springsteen's Atlantic City as part of the Hangin' Out On E Street video series- which included some other really cool performances. Mat's got new work coming out soon, and the first single "Closer to Love" is streaming on his site / myspace .
I guess I missed this whole " Hangin' Out on E Street " thing on Bruce Springsteen 's website. It's a series of videos - featuring an interview and a cover song - from Boss-loving musicians including Gaslight Anthem , Avett Brothers , Against Me! , Bouncing Souls , Mat Kearney , Juliana Hatfield and Wyclef Jean . But, unsurprisingly, I'm posting the videos from Ted Leo . Ted Leo - Dancing in the Dark
It may have taken a little longer than expected, but Keane will soon hit the U.S. in support of last year's Perfect Symmetry . You know, the English outfit's third studio album that despite rather unfavorable critical reception, still managed to chart in at #1 in the U.K. and #7 in the U.S. Well, following their remaining Latin American tour dates, Tom Chaplin and Co. will head to the U.S. beginning in early May for a 12-date endeavor in support of the release. Mat Kearney , who will be celebrating the release of [...]

Frank Yang If there's an advantage to writing about the same band for the third time in the span of a month, it's that rather than try and lay down some background, I can just point you here and here and voila - you're up to speed. If there's a disadvantage, it's completely running out of things to say. But I'll soldier on. Sunday night was the long-awaited album release party for Bruce Peninsula's debut A Mountain Is A Mouth and there [...]

sporting my my dad's driving glasses and seat belt for this Mondays mix theme. Ride, be it bus, train, car, helicopter, a compilation for transportation. You can derive the deeper meaning from all the songs while you're on the commute or you know just mellow out on them. Ride - Cary brothers : a chill song, got it off scrubs. the episode where Zach Braff says that line, you know, with those words, to that person... Where are we going [...]

In a word, this song is breathtaking (pun intended). If you didn't know this already, I'm a big Mat Kearney fan. Though you might have your quips about him being on a major label, I've been listening to him since he was an independent artist. He hasn't changed and let the record deal get to his head, and his music's only gotten better. This song is refreshing after having heard some of the songs on the Aware release for over 3 years! The thing that I [...]
