We caught Mat McHugh , singer/songwriter and frontman for The Beautiful Girls , last year on his tour with the band. We've been following TBG for quite some time and took some time backstage at the local venue here in Portland to chat with him. He's on a roll this year, with touring with TBG and several world wide gigs now scheduled for his solo acoustic tour where he will be performing songs from his new acoustic solo EP. Check out the tour dates below as well as his new video for "Go Don't Stop" off the EP, [...]

Sometimes you get a decent feel for a band simply by looking at its fans. Awkward, patchy-skinned adolescents and their late-twenties counterparts: Weezer. A handful of cute, shy chicks scattered amongst a bunch of aggressive dudes in their early twenties, most wearing tank tops and baggy t-shirts: Atmosphere. Casually but trendily attired twenty-to-thirty-somethings, a few with dreads and many in pairs: John Butler Trio . Typical modern jam band? Not exactly. John Butler and his trio tore into "Pickapart" to open their Tuesday night set at the Crystal Ballroom . Energetic, groovable and [...]

For music lovers, listeners, or simply people who don't like silence in the workplace, weeks come and go as do the songs that get you through them. Now, to the people that throw on KROQ and zone out for 8 hours, this insight may not be for you, but for ...
Mat Mchugh, lead singer of the Aussie based The Beautiful Girls, has stepped out on his own putting forth a solo album titled Seperatista. The album, in contrast to TBG, is intended to be a stripped down acoustic set. Of course I immediately imagined some sort of Jack Johnson Donaven Frankenreiter clone. The first track Under the Landslide did nothing to change my opinion, but as I progressed I was introduced to a CD with an immense amount of musicality and far darker imagery than Johnson's typical beach going fare.
An extra-long roundup this week (and a day early!) to make up for my tardiness last week. And included are some tracks from the upcoming Dark Was the Night compilation album coming out February 17th of this year to benefit the Red Hot Organization - an international charity dedicated to raising money and awareness for HIV and AIDS through popular culture. "Deep Blue Sea," "Knotty Pine," and "Train Song" are all on the album, with plenty more besides (for a full track listing, click here - doesn't it sound marvelous)? I also threw [...]
Viva the willful left turn! The element of surprise has been a cornerstone of great music forever: think Bob Dylan's electric revolution, or every second album by Neil Young, or the Clash's outrageous triple-disc sprawl, Sandinista! All and none of them were on Mat McHugh 's mind when he took time out from his day job as founder-singer-songwriter of The Beautiful Girls to record this playful, profound and provocative solo debut, 'Seperatista!' "Darling, This Scene Must End" video : [...]
For most of us, it's cold, snowy, and downright miserable outside. But in many respects, this week is also one of celebration. For one, we're currently taking in the sights and sounds of Chicago's Tomorrow Never Knows Festival , and if you've been reading our coverage, you'll know it's been unbelievably awesome. But that's really only the beginning, as in the coming hours and days, we'll be unveiling a few more goodies that would warm even the coldest of souls. So until then, sit back, relax, and enjoy this week's edition of our Friday Mixtape. TNK Fun: [...]
