Mates of States are releasing their brand new album today called Mountaintops . Combining the male/female vocals have made them pretty popular in the last coming years. I think MySpace was the first place I heard Mates of States , along with a lot of others. How the times have changed for MySpace, but moving on. I'm feeling this album a lot. You can listen to it over at Rolling Stone . Via Pigeons & Planes Fresh? Tour Dates: 9/21 [...]

Indie-pop veterans Mates Of State return with Mountaintops , their first album of new material in four years and seventh overall, out today on Barsuk Records. The duo of Jason and Kori self-produced the new album for the first time, owning and honing every aspect of their music to showcase their evolution into an unstoppable, undeniable pop machine over the last decade. Again touches of guitar, trumpets and electronic beats find their way into the mix but the spotlight remains on their effortless vocal harmonies and organ and drums set-up. The album opens with the joyful [...]

Mates of State releases their seventh album, Mountaintops , today. Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel met right here in Lawrence, Kansas before relocating to California and eventually settling in Connecticut. They now have two children but continue to make music and tour. Kori even has a blog, Diaper On The Run , in which she tells of her parenting experiences and tales of the life of a traveling family band. The new album is Mates of State at its finest. From the "Whoo Oohooh Oooh" of the opening track, "Palomino", and the synthesized beats of [...]

Before Summer officially ends, the releases are heating up in a big way way as notable names in the indie rock world push forth new albums. The Kooks (above) have been around the tour circuit a few times, and with the release of Junk of the Heart , except even greater things from the Brighton fellows. Unfortunately, their tour dates tend to revolve around the UK, but perhaps we'll be able to shoot an update about US tour dates. From the West Coast of the US, Portland's folk group Blitzen Trapper [...]

Pardon us while we catch our breathe for a second. This is a huge week for new releases (expect this to be true for the next couple months as we get ready for the holiday season). There are plenty of reissues this week--ranging from Bob Segar to The Meat Puppets to Dan Deacon --and that's just touching the tip of the iceberg. Classic favorites like Foreigner , Antrhax , Primus (pictured), and Blondie (the latter being an Amazon exclusive) have new records; while hipper, younger acts like The [...]

Connecticut's (shoutout to CT) Mates Of State are releasing their new album Mountaintops on September 13th. With male-female vocals and melodies as sweet and colorful as a bag of Jolly Ranchers, the indie-pop band's seventh album shows that they're just as capable over horns and pianos as they are over synths and bouncing bass lines. They had me 18 seconds into track one. Head over to Rolling Stone to stream the album. But then come back here. Album Stream: Mates Of State - Mountaintops [...]

Mates of State - Mountaintops Barsuk: 2011 There's a brief but telling moment in the teaser for Mountaintops , the new Mates of State record. It's an off-center, out of focus shot of the married couple rehearsing and in it, Kori Gardner Hammel suggests a song's chorus take on a rougher tone. As soon as she's done suggesting and singing, James Hammel asks, "Is there a way to change the word 'baby' out of there, too?" Subtle as those suggestions may be, over the course of [...]

There is a ton of new music just around the corner and three upcoming albums from Barsuk Records are definitely worth paying attention to. Sebastian Slayter I've read a few things about Pacific Northwest by way of New York trio Widowspeak that reference the darkness of their music; the haunting tones, yearning vocals and occasional forays into guitar squalls. Perfectly fair. And most everything written about them mentions the smoky vocals of Molly Hamilton and its immediate reference points of Hope Sandoval and Cat Power. Also totally valid. And yet listening to their self-titled debut , despite the truth of those points and the fact that I like amounts of all of these things [...]
