Got back home to Washington last night just before an insane storm hit which has knocked out power for all of Whidbey Island, likely to last several days. Yikes. Fortunately, we've got a generator and (at least temporarily) an internet connection, and I wrote up a few days of posts before getting here, so I won't be too much MIA. Anyways, it's getting to be that time of year when everyone and their kid brother is making a "Best of the year" list. You may have noticed mine isn't ready yet, but [...]

( Zhang Xiaogang ) 01 : Animental // Soundtrack Reminds me of that one SNL skit, Goth Talk. Welcome to the show that explores the moody depths of the goth lifestyle here in Tampa, Florida. 02 : Mahogany // Neo-Plastic Boogie-Woogie Connectivity! is probably going to be on the top albums list I make next month. This track is more chamberpop than the rest. 03 : [...]

Seattle, WA Math And Physics Club is suggested for people who enjoy sweet little chamber pop bands like Belle & Sebastian or Camera Obscura . You can order their self-titled debut through Matinee Recordings . "I Know What I Want" [...]

This week's releases contains three of what will probably be in my end of the year list that i'll start compiling sometime soon. I'm sure everyone knows of the masterpiece that is Joanna Newsom's Ys . It's finally here and like I said in a previous post, it's absolutely flawless. The string arrangements from legendary Beach Boys collaborator Van Dyke Parks are absolutely amazing and pretty much killed me upon listening. Despite being only five tracks long, each are of the highest quality with [...]

It's been awhile since an album has really completed me. I know that sounds like an over-dramatized statement, but the new self-titled Math and Physics Club album has essentially engulfed me of late. I find myself listening to it when I wake up, when I go to bed, when I am wishing for fall weather in Southern California, and basically, whenever else I feel like it! [...]

So we've had something of a redesign of the site over the past few days. I did it kind of haphazardly, as in I worked on the site while it was live, so if you stopped by and things were broken and the such, I apologise profusely for that. Hopefully you like the new design. It's not entirely complete yet, but I'm happier with it. It's cleaner, which was the main thing I wanted to achieve, and it allows easy implementation of new features. Onto the music, and today we have a treat from [...]

I love having my own tipsters, my own "deepthroat" if you will. On both swedesplease and songs:illinois I have a number of mysterious industry contacts who email me some pretty amazing stuff. Today I received a song from Ramsey Midwood's unreleased sophomore record. His debut record ( Shootout ) was originally released on Glitterhouse in Germany but was later issued on Vanguard in the US. This was a strange choice for the label since while the record was undeniably artistically robust, it had little chance of making any dent in the US. [...]

Hello Bitches! You know, sometimes even yours truly has a visit to Sadtown but I generally find my trips shorter & shorter these days. And why is that? Well, things always get better but also Motel Melancholy on Malaise Avenue really doesn't hold the charm that it once did for me. I don't like to wallow in my mopey-ness. That said, I'd like to give a great big THANK YOU to Mark L (from the island of Mauritius!) & Chris H (From Cali!) for their very generous donations to help [...]
Anyone else as excited as I am for the new Math and Physics Club record? Obviously Matt is because he's the one who supplied me with this new MAPC track! The new record is due out on Matinee in October, but here's a quick peek! MP3: Math and Physics Club - ...

Bonus-MP3 #1: Graduation Day [...]
What an intimidating name for an English major to take on. But maybe if I ever met the Math and Physics Club, they'd be really nice, like my stepbrother who's getting a masters in theoretical math. I prefer to think of it that way, instead of them making really obscure black hole jokes and then laughing at my puzzled expression. Nah, I'm just kidding, because M&PC seems more focussed on the math & physics of relationships, and that's familiar territory. I'll make the inevitable Lucksmiths comparison - in "Weekends Away," they really do sound like [...]

Math and Physics Club Quite the departure from yesterday's post, but not so much in the general sound of things here, we have some more pop. Seattle's poetically cute Math and Physics Club released two fantastic EPs last year and after over a year of work they're finally set to release their debut self-titled album on Matinée Records in October. Check out this lovely track, from the upcoming record. Highly Recommened for fans of The Lucksmiths, The Razorcuts, Belle and [...]
