We come across new artists each and every day, but are all acts worth making a fuss over? With You Be The Judge , we’re leaving it up to YOU, our readers. Should we keep tabs on these rising artists, leave their tunes behind — or at least let them stew a bit longer before we give them another chance? Meet this week's act up for your consideration: Matt Hires. After releasing his debut record Take Us to the Start in 2009, the 27-year-old singer-songwriter is back in [...]
After a string of acoustic tour dates this fall, singer/songwriter Matt Hires heads back into the studio to beging work on his second full-length album and the 2012 follow up to 2009's well-received major label debut Take Us to the Start . A handful of one-off EP's and some selected club dates over the past year have given Hires the chance to try out some new material and we're curious where this upcoming project will take him. If "From A to B", taken from this past spring's Acoustic Sessions EP is [...]

Forty years after the Corley family planted their first grape plants in Napa Valley, their sons Kevin, Chris and Stephen have grown the Monticello Winery into one of the most unique and beautiful vineyards in the area. As the name suggests, and with an almost exact replica of his Virginia home on the estate, Monticello embodies Thomas Jefferson’s philosophy that “good wine is a necessity of life”. I have the same philosophy on music, so pairing the two together on a sunny day in Napa made for a pretty-amazing afternoon. The Corley family also [...]

Watched the trailer for the new Clive Owen film earlier - it looked like something I'd generally avoid but the song in the background got my attention. It's from a Californian singer/songwriter called Matt Hires. Usually this stuff wouldn't appeal to me but there's something about it that I really like. His MySpace makes him look a little bit too polished for my liking but song is relaxing and after a stressful week, I'm happy to put it up. Matt Hires - Turn The Page - [...]

Paolo Nutini . You glance at the name and think maybe that's a new flavor of ice cream. Or maybe gelato. Sounds Italian enough, doesn't it? But you'd be wrong. Paolo Nutini is, in fact, a 22-year-old singer/guitarist from Paisley, Scotland (his father is of Tuscan descent) who quickly became a UK heartthrob in the wake of the success of his 2006 pop/soul debut album These Streets . I recall seeing the video for his tune "New Shoes" on the VH1 Top 20 Countdown one Saturday morning and [...]

Friday again, and although summer is officially here (we hit 90 degrees this week in the ATL), but it seems like it's also been raining for the past few weeks- thus the banner this week. Hopefully, the rain will hold off for the weekend, and the annual Virginia Highlands Summerfest will stay dry. Rain or shine, there'll be some pretty great music happening there this weekend- check out Matt Hires, Back Door Slam, and Cowboy Mouth on Saturday and The Constellations and Manchester Orchestra on Sunday. I've added some tracks from Summerfest bands to this week's mixtape, beefing [...]

This week's SFFM is brought to you entirely by the good folks at SXSW- Every track on it has been culled from the multitudes of files available from the SXSW festival site . There are some old friends in here: Brooke Waggoner , Bedouin Soundclash , Wintersleep , and Great Northern , and some new ones: One Day International, James Harries, Hatcham Social. In all, I'm actually glad not to be in Austin this weekend. I hate the crowds and schedules- trying to shuffle from one venue to another to catch the artists I [...]

The downside to the sheer proliferation of music technology is that there’s simply too much of everything. Anyone who can press a key or scramble together a guitar chord can sound semi-capable given the right tools. In other words, everyone thinks they’re the Next Big Thing. A couple of years back we were overrun with thrash metal and boy bands. Today it’s annoying female warblers, musical collectives and the overused singer-songwriter persona. Anyone who flies solo, swings a guitar and pens introspective lyrics is suddenly the next Lisa Loeb or John Mayer. It’s a case of supply heavily-outweighing [...]

Photo by Reid Rolls 22 year old Tampa based singer-songwriter Matt Hires has a gift for writing a catchy song with lyrics that will tug at your heart strings. He's got an endearing and charming music presence and when he sings there's bound to be some swooning. Hires was "discovered" through his myspace page by a label executive and was signed to Atlantic Records. Home schooled, Hires played in
