Matt Jones : Ballad of Medgar Evers [ purchase ] The civil rights movement peaked during my childhood. I vaguely remember reading about it in the newspapers and seeing things on TV, and I remember hearing that Martin Luther King, Jr. had been assassinated. On my mother's birthday. Of course, growing up in the 70's in a liberal suburban New York family, the civil rights movement was always there, always something that I was aware of, but [...]

Straight out of the best parts of 902s pop punk comes Matt & Kim's excellent new production, "I'm A Goner." The song, which is the newest addition to their collaboration project, Three Artists, One Song, features Andrew W.K. and - yes - Soulja Boy. Soulja's rap is nothing particularly out of the ordinary, but he doesn't mess up the beat and manages not to distract from the instrumentals. The chorus, "Believe me / I said I'm a goner" is mindless, but it's fun. The same could be said of this song. Matt & Kim's stated aim was "to [...]

Exploiting Coco's OCD's 1st birthday to collide my two favorite worlds: Music & Film (yes, in that order). My blogger friends picked it up from there and made it happen. Much love. ______________________________ ______________________________ ______________________________ ______________________________ _________________________ Jarred Beeler Sydney Blog's Name: Life: Aquatic [...]

Photos by G. Art by Matt Jones . Matt Jones - Multiverse. Now showing at Freight + Volume in New York through May 7, 2011 Artist Matt Jones explores the concept of what makes a logo iconicin his latest exhibition "Multiverse" which is now showing at Freight + Volume in New York. Matt Jones has drawn inspiration from Raymond Pettibon's 19702s Black Flag band logo (which is 4 vertical black bars on a white background). Jones appropriates the simple image in a mixed media presentation [...]
"Be Sincere." That's it really, in a nutshell, distilled to its very essence. That is our simple entreaty, something held more vital than a manifesto, but not quite dogma. It a sense, there's not much to it, or at least not much concrete. There's something about it, though, something compelling. Sincerity is one of those lovely little ideas both ultimately mutable and utterly inarguable. One can be sincere about almost anything, yet once you are, it is a statement of ultimate purpose and conviction. It's a form of truth. I'll admit, the [...]

I usually like to get my adjectives in order before I begin discussing an artist, and, while shuffling through the thesaurus in my head, the best I could manage to describe Matt Jones was "lithe." True, it's a term heaped more often on strippers than indie folksters, but it seems oddly fitting to describe Jones' nimble, carefully orchestrated tunes. An Ann Arbor/Ypsi folk stalwart with an impending Daytrotter session , Matt Jones sings sly, beautiful songs in a sharp, controlled voice that at times is reminiscent of the Weakerthans, of Jeff Buckley, but with a slightly more theatrical bent. [...]

We all know I am a big fan of the Michigan music scene and why not with a line up and winter music festival like this? It's Mittenfest V and it's the place to be if you are local or planning on being in the Michigan area - If only I wasn't 3000+ miles away. :-/ There are crazy amounts of talent performing over the 4 days starting tomorrow. Think about it; Matt Jones , Fields of Industry , This is Deer Country , [...]
So I have some behind the scenes footage, but I thought I'd post this little video that I found floating around on YouTube of footage from our first ever GFP showcase here in Brooklyn, featuring Matt Jones. This is a song called "Hand Out the Drugs." The sound quality isn't the best, but I think the video does a nice job of showing how intimate and warm the show was.
As you might be able to tell by our lack of posting, we were hard at work over the holidays putting together our end of the year lists. Today is the first of three lists - our Best Albums of 2009 list. So in no particular order, we present them to you: The Antlers - Hospice This intensely beautiful, heart-wrenching album is full of more tragedy than we would hope any one person would

Lise posted her Halloween mix, so now I'm going to post mine (and I'm using her collage because I'm feeling, well, lazy). How many of you out there are planning on being Balloon Boy or something based on that theme? I bet there's going to be at least as many this year as there were Sarah Palins AND Jokers combined... Anyway, on to the music. Not all of the songs I'm posting are all that creepy (

I've been busy lately with some non music related stuff (sad, I know). But I've also been working on and off trying to set up the next Songs:Illinois presents house concert and yesterday I finalized it. On Oct. 11 we welcome Peter Mulvey and Matt Jones into our living room. I'm excited about the lineup as Peter Mulvey is known for his songs, stories and good humor. Matt Jones is a Ypsilanti based artist that has been labeled indie folk. But on his debut his music veers in [...]
"I just want this record to do well," he says without irony, sipping coffee near the still-not-open venue. "I want to pay that money back. I also want to do something bigger than Ann Arbor or Ypsi. ... I get crowded into the Michigan indie folk scene a lot," he continues, and then he finishes the thought as if he scorched his tongue on the hot liquid, "I love it, but ..." That's how ended this cinematographic review of Matt Jone's first full length The Black Path from Brian Smith, editor on the Metro Times ( [...]

After Matt Jones played his set at Union Hall, we led him and a few of his friends to an abandoned couch that was a block away from the venue. The lighting was poor, but that comfy bulk of green sitting amongst the continual swooshes of passing cars seemed like it was just waiting for us. Matt was joined by cellist Colette Alexander, who miraculously lifted a folding chair out of the venue without anyone noticing, and Carol Gray, who played the fiddle. They played three songs, "Lady Dawn", "Threadlines" and "Hand Out the Drugs", out of which [...]

A random tidbit, to start the week, One Sweet Song got a nice feature in Chicago's Cul de sac Magazine. You can read it here. On to tunes; unfortunately, I wasn't able to post on Friday, due to internet issues. To make it up to you, I'm posting double the songs today. I had an epic weekend of shows—three in as many days! The middle show was Rufus Wainwright, which I attended with my stepmom (she [...]

Last night I went to see one of my favorite singer-songwriters who you regular readers are probably familiar with by now because I'm totally obsessed with his music: Matt Jones. This time he had violinist and cellist with him, and that was quite a treat. The cello is a very prevalent instrument on his album, so it made the music sound so much richer live. He played a relatively short set sadly,
