After Matt Jones played his set at Union Hall, we led him and a few of his friends to an abandoned couch that was a block away from the venue. The lighting was poor, but that comfy bulk of green sitting amongst the continual swooshes of passing cars seemed like it was just waiting for us. Matt was joined by cellist Colette Alexander, who miraculously lifted a folding chair out of the venue without anyone noticing, and Carol Gray, who played the fiddle. They played three songs, "Lady Dawn", "Threadlines" and "Hand Out the Drugs", out of which [...]

A random tidbit, to start the week, One Sweet Song got a nice feature in Chicago's Cul de sac Magazine. You can read it here. On to tunes; unfortunately, I wasn't able to post on Friday, due to internet issues. To make it up to you, I'm posting double the songs today. I had an epic weekend of shows—three in as many days! The middle show was Rufus Wainwright, which I attended with my stepmom (she [...]

Last night I went to see one of my favorite singer-songwriters who you regular readers are probably familiar with by now because I'm totally obsessed with his music: Matt Jones. This time he had violinist and cellist with him, and that was quite a treat. The cello is a very prevalent instrument on his album, so it made the music sound so much richer live. He played a relatively short set sadly,

Here's a schedule of Secret Garden releases coming in the near future. If you're unfamiliar with this ever-changing, magical garden, it is a video series in which I film bands performing a few songs outside the context of a regular show. Along with the schedule you'll also find some "candid band photos" that, as a tradition of my own, I take after each shoot-though sometimes I forget. If you're a blogger who'd like to write a preview for any of these episodes before they release, just email me at hoovesontheturf [at] gmail [dot] com [...]

The photo above features Matt Jones. Matt Jones is more or less new to me. The fact that the trailer in the photo above is made by John Deere is not lost on me. Michigan isn't just the city of Detroit. Michigan is as vast as it's songwriter talent pool is deep. This fact says something and it is not lost on me...I just may be packing my bags as I type this. I have to admit that I wasn't totally aware of Matt Jones work prior to a month or so ago. Led to him from suggestions [...]
Happy New Year everyone! We actually meant to post this yesterday, but we were just so busy celebrating the New Year that it didn't happen. So, in honor of the first day of the new year, here are some artists we think you should keep your eye out for in the year 2009. Erin McCarley It's hard to believe that her album was just released on iTunes two days ago- December 30th- with a physical
If it's Christmas at You Ain't No Picasso, that means it's Mixmas! These twelve days give me a chance to turn You Ain't No Picasso over to the musicians I cover and allow them to showcase and talk about some of their favorite songs through a themed mix. This is the fourth year of Mixmas; [...]

Unless you've been sequestered at summer camp, you know that Detroit bands have put out some stellar records of late. For those of us in Washtenaw County, it's sweet to see Ann Arbor keeping pace. "I've been here seventeen years and what's been going on just in the last two years is the real thing." So says recording engineer Jim Roll about the current state of music west of I-275. And we're not going to argue. From his Ann Arbor-based studio, Roll has had a front-row seat, recording many of the best [...]
Lise already posted her top 5 summer songs, but I have been reluctant to admit that summer is over. I'm still not ready for it to end, but I think I can safely list the songs that topped my summer playlist (though picking 5 is too hard, but I've managed to narrow it down to 10). The songs tend to come from all different genres all over the place and were played on repeat for different reasons,
I actually got my hands on this album a while back and I have been dying to post about it for months, and now I finally get to! Some of you may remember when I wrote about Matt Jones' performance at The Creek and The Cave earlier this year. He pretty much instantly became one of my favorite artists and I've been looking forward to this album ever since. It's his first full-length album I do

[Local! Music! Friday!] On Fridays, I will be featuring local music, but it will be my own brand of local music. Living in NYC pretty much eliminates "local music" because this place is just too dang big to have a scene. As a result, the local music I feature here will be local to my life, which is to say, I'll be posting music of people I know personally, through national and global music scenes, through life, through [...]
While browsing the web searching for information about Chris Bathgate in order to write a decent introduction, I've been teasing by the frequency of the name : Matt Jones. Curiosity once again won ! After crawling under many pages about a homonym sportsman, i've finally loaded Matt Jones's myspace page , labeled as indie, acoustic, folk... Some rare singers have the gift to captivate at first notes, this is Matt Jone's case. But this initial attraction is progressively converted into a complete addiction as Matt is offering more than just a great songwriting ability. His [...]

Ironically this whole week was supposed to be about bands from Lawrence, KS. You can thank that Tom Brousseau video, the Chris Bathgate tunes and now Matt Jones for preempting the 2nd annual Lawrence, KS. music week. Matt Jones' name was suggested to us by an astute Michigaonian (sp?) who corrected a couple of flaws on our otherwise stellar post about Chris Bathgate. So on to Matt Jones. There's not much to say really. His MySpace page is criminally neglected, his Wikipedia entry is some kind of inside joke, and of course he's [...]
