Well, with snow blanketing apparently the entire world, I thought a winter-themed post would be apt. Wintersleep I suppose it makes some sense that the Canadians are good at producing some quality wintery bands. 2007's Welcome to the Night Sky was excellent, and these boys have set May 2010 as a tentative release date for their next album. Matt Mays & El Torpedo – Wicked Come Winter [...]

The band have been touring coast to coast since mid October and are finishing up their Canadian tour on December 17th in Vancouver at the Commodore Ballroom! If you are unsure if you want to check them out live, you can get a sampling of the band live with the tracks below. The band released their album Terminal Romance earlier this year. The album is a follow-up to their award winning album When The Angels Make Contact, which was released in 2006. The album won four East Coast Music Awards in 2006 (Album of the Year, Group of [...]

Matt Mays and his band El Torpedo are a busy bunch. Last month I posted the dates for their fall tour, but it seems going on the road until the middle of November wasn't enough for this crew. Now they've extended their current road adventure until the end of November, and this is good news if you happen to live in Montreal, Quebec City, Fredericton, or Halifax. But check the dates below for the full range of stops still ahead of Mays and his Torpedo compadres, and I'll also mention that the Cunard Centre show next month [...]

A couple of years ago I had become quite smitten with Shoestring Universe , the alt country debut release by NYC's Proud Simon . I've found that their sophomore album Night Of Criminals had taken me a little bit more time to form an attachment to, but now that I have, I feel that it is a significant step up for the band. The album is presented as a concept album of sorts, although the storytelling aspect is kept relatively dubious. According to Brian Keenan's official explanation, the album tells the story of a [...]

Matt Mays & El Torpedo [ Official Site , Myspace ] have released a video of their first single, ???Tall Trees??? from their new album Terminal Romance (out September 30th). The video???s director, Drew Lightfoot , created a surrealistically dark, tongue-in-cheek portrait for the lead track off the new album, and the band has already received comparisons to a Canadian version of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers . Best part about this video: Matt Mays drives a Delorean. Yeah, the Back to the [...]
"A Little Tradition" - Novillero Smart and sharp, with a Britpop flair, complete with horn charts and marvelous lyrics. And I'm calling the lyrics marvelous based almost entirely on their sound, not their content (although from what I can understand, the content is impressive too). Not many bands work hard enough to get their words so crisply aligned with the music but these five guys from Winnipeg have an enviable knack for songcraft. Check out how precisely everything fits when Rod Slaughter sings "What's wrong with a little tradition?": it's so comfortable it [...]

I don't base this on any official facts & figures, but by my calculations, Matt Mays is currently the 2nd most popular export from Cole Harbour Nova Scotia. The young chap holding down the number one spot seems to be doing well for himself. Mays and his band El Torpedo released their sophomore album, Terminal Romance , earlier this summer, and I, amongst others, thought it was a rather solid rock album . Well Mays & Co. have just started out on an extensive Canadian tour (with some US dates added [...]

photo: Scott McIntyre A g ld old fashiuoned 'rawk' album, that's Terminal Romance by Matt Mays & El Torpedo . The Canadian quartet crossed the big pond to lay down the tracks in England and although Chris Spedding wasn't involved in the proceedings it certainly sounds like he was. This is a no-frills album that will no doubt be picked by the crowd who attend the bands live shows. Don't expect advanced musical licks and tricks. This is 'in-your-face' music for the air guitar players. [...]

If it didn't sound kind of lame, I would describe Matt Mays as kind of the "unknown star" of the Halifax music scene (and yes, I know he's from Dartmouth, but that's just how I roll). I don't mean to say that he's completely unknown, but considering what the former Guthrie has accomplished in a fairly short time (plenty of airplay for Cocaine Cowgirl, ECMA wins, appearance on Conan, etc.), he has a fairly low national profile compared to someone like Plaskett. Well Matt and El Torpedo are planning to change that with the release of their new [...]

Lots on the brain today....1st I gotta bitch about Pitchfork & Metacritic reviews of The Fiery Furnaces new LP Widow City ......Are u kidding me??...A shitty 7 outta 10 from both sides??..Sorry guys but this album deserves a lot more then that. This is defiantly the Friedbergers best effort ....and I always hear something [...]
The Ack mentioned the latest acts added to the Pop Explosion the other day (The Besnard Lakes, Brother Ali, Dog Day, Matt Mays & El Torpedo), and I have to say, each one of those acts is a welcome addition. At this point I think the 15th edition of the Explosion is going to be one of, if not the best in the event's history. So to continue our fest pre-game coverage, I thought I'd discuss the two latest local acts added to the roster. As Ack mentioned, we reviewed Dog Day's debut, Night Group [...]
Ok this is really exciting and also very important...Its that time of year again for " Neiles Life Year End Lists " A list of top albums and songs of 2006...Why so early?? Because I did my list for 2005 around this time last year. Actually it was November 24 of last year that I did my favourite albums of 2005...I believe its the best time to do these lists. A) Cause there isn`t a lot of good albums that come out in December anyway, except for those BullShit albums that the major labels push on us [...]
