I'm sorry if my hateful tweets regarding Halloween the last couple of days has brought you lot down, but seriously, Halloween here in Sweden is a joke. Can't stand it, I don't do Halloween, period. However, even though my mail is stuffed to the absolute limit with Halloween-ish material this mix by one of my [...]

Filed under: Pop Culture , New Music Jonathan Leibson, FilmMagic Relentless polymath James Franco continues his quest to shame the rest of the known world with with a surprising (but not really) new turn as a member of experimental music group Kalup & Franco . The Yale-educated Ph.D. actor, writer, director and -- breathe -- multiple degree-holder recently finished a stint on daytime soap 'General Hospital,' where he invited drag queen, Guggenheim fellow and soap [...]
I have been super busy lately and I wanted to get you all my favorite songs from the SXSW 2011 torrent before the music part of SXSW starts tomorrow. So here's L-N artists to check out at SXSW 2011 and later today I will bring you P-R artists. Fir

While the horrifically disgusting weather that took over our fair city deterred many an otherwise adventurous soul from venturing outside of their apartments, I personally don't see any better way to beat the winter blues than some good tunes and cheerful company. So, we braved the puddles of semi-frozen black slush and made our way to Tammany Hall, formerly The Annex, where East Village Radio was throwing an anniversary party in honor of their show Worldwide Smash. DJ Still Life who hosts Worldwide Smash started the night out, followed by Jojo Mayer + Nerve [...]

Matt Shadetek & Lamin Fofana - Sunshine City ( mp3 )

Here comes the second part of the wrap up of the 20 best tracks of 2010, in no particular order, just five good tunes that defines 2010 for me: Spoek Mathambo - 'Mshini Wam' Spoek Mathambo recently got nominated as Best New Act of 2010 in URB's Readers poll (cast your votes here ) and he sure deserves it cause 2010 has been Spoek's year, without a doubt. Releasing his debut solo album " Mshini Wam ", gracing the cover of FADER Magazine, touring the world like a madman and been featured on [...]
For the first-ever Hi Fi Cartel party/hangout at New York's Le Poisson Rouge venue, the gang have brought out the likes of Machinedrum, Matt Shadetek and the one and only Ikonika for "sub:culture". Also appearing will be Hi Fi's Ollie Dhali, Seth Skizzo and the mysterious wunderkind Spectacal. RSVP here for $7 admission before midnight. [...]
A subculture is understood as a group of people with a culture, distinct or hidden, which differentiates them from the larger culture to which they belong. Subcultures can be distinctive because of the age, ethnicity, class, location, and/or gender of the members. For The HiFi Cartel, our subculture is that of an unwavering and impassioned dedication to music - and to sub bass. We believe in music that you can feel in your very being, music that makes you forget all about the worries of the day and the pressures of responsibility, music that makes you move without [...]

After Matt Shadetek's huge solo album "Flowers" comes another great release from the Dutty Artz-camp, /DJ Rupture's "CIAfrica". When African music sort of has been on the hype the last three or four years this is something else. It's not kuduro, it's not very dancey at all, not at least what we are used to when it comes to Africa and bass. Instead it's abrasive, synthetic, angular, lyric-driven music. CIA stands for Clan Des Indigenes Accables of United States of Africa and "CIAfrica" is heavy, grimy, African rap straight from Babi, Cote D'Ivoire featuring producer Green [...]

What do you think about when you think about Africa? What do you hear when you listen to Africa? And, what does one write about when they write about Africa ? These questions are important questions. Single dimensions are rampant in many visions of Africa, particularly concerning the political and economic instability of many African nations. However, these common struggles don't equate singular cultural expressions, an easy lens to pick up when few alternatives are offered. African musics vary immensely, though what is often brought to the U.S. ear is a window of African music that shines [...]

On his first instrumental album, Shadetek aims for the dancefloor but doesn't completely leave behind the grit that's shaped his current work. With tropical influences propped up by a prominent low end, Flowers has Matt "Shadetek" Schell pushing almost exclusively upbeat tracks. There's a dance agenda on the producer's first instrumental album, but before this club-centric record came to fruition, Schell's output included noisy glitch, grime, hip-hop, dancehall, and most recently, a team-up mix album with DJ /rupture that the pair issued on their own Dutty Artz imprint. Snaky synth leads and techy beats power funky house...
Cool animated video directed by Sarah Taighter containing a medley of songs taken from DJ Rupture and Matt Shadetek's 'Solar Life Raft' mix CD that is available now on The Agriculture.

DJ /rupture is a New York-via-Barcelona based writer/producer/dj. He initially gained a lot of attention for his ridiculous mixtapes, then dropped a couple of albums that transcended genres and privied listeners to his influences. He also created a blog that you have to check out. I'm really getting into the visuals for Solar Life Raft Medley . Gorgeous visuals perfectly accompanying /rupture 's ambience. Check him on tour with fellow D.I.D. favorites Gang Gang Dance all winter. [...]

On Solar Life Raft , Rupture and Shadetek weave a thick tapestry of sound. The jarringly decontextualized recitation in "More Pets" feels at first like a seam in the pattern, but when it elides into French it reminds the listener that the spoken word is just another tone to be threaded. Reminds us of: DJ Shadow | Four Tet | Three turntables and a microphone DJ/Rupture : ( Blog / Myspace ) DJ /rupture [...]

Good old DJ /rupture 's been busy of late preaching the gospel according to Cumbia and working on new material with Matt Shadetek on a new 12" that comes out very soon and features DJ Kiva and is sure to include Cumbia deliciousness. DJ /rupture is one of those really solid artists you can really rely on to put out forward-thinking, intelligent music; from jungle to hip-hop and ragga. And on top of all this, he runs a radio show on WFMU that you can catch up on by clicking on [...]
No time to wax poetic today, I'm still nursing a hangover from Saturday night (thanks John) but wanted to share some of The Giant Panther's favorite tracks I've stumbled across during the past year. Most of these tunes don't come from an official LP release, some are remixes, some are covers, but all are good times. I had ten songs I wanted to share with you today but creating hyperlinks is a pain in the ass, so hear are seven. Vega is another project from one of my [...]

Artwork by Lupo Avanti Featured here not long ago and further represented by the The Guardian in the UK, our Bay Area representative Chief Boima has just released something we teased at last time. Under the Dutty Artz banner, Boima has put together a remarkably fresh collection of Rap/Hip-Hop re-workings that utilize African rhythmic and melodic sensibilities. Song include Birdman ("Money To Blow" feat. Drake and Lil Wayne), Akon ("Right Now"), The Jacka ("Glamorous Lifestyle" feat. Andre Nickatina), Fabo & T-Pain ("Own Step"). If this doesn't quite [...]

One of the bands who will surely find themselves on my Best of 09 list is Telepathe . Dance Mother had so many great songs and seeing the band live earlier this year solidified them as a YoungCreature fave for sure. In addition to a great record and live show, their music has lent itself well to the remix. With about a million Telepathe remixes out there one may think that adding another one to the blogosphere is tired, but that is not the case with DJ/Rupture and Matt Shadetek 's take on In Your Line. [...]
