Midlake I was looking forward to this show for quite sometime. Midlake's The Trials of Van Occupanther is the perfect hazy day soundtrack for me and when this year's The Courage Of Others came out, that album quickly became one of my favorites of the year. By pledging allegiance to old-time country music, 1960s The Band-like harmonies, and exuberant acoustic clatter, Midlake create hushed, dreamy and mysteriously beautiful music. Matthew and the Arrogant Sea Opening was the fello [...]

Check out my photos of Midlake at the Belly Up over at Stereogum .
Kind of exciting... SXSW Music starts in only two weeks, which means that a whole lot of great bands are starting to tour. Expected hippest of the uber-hyped to be coming around these parts. Here's the very beginning of it: Wednesday, March 3rd Deer Tick at The Independent, 8 PM Deer Tick is one of the most versatile [...]
Last Wednesday night, the fine young Denton gentlemen known as Matthew and The Arrogant Sea stopped on by our Oak Cliff filming location to treat us to a slew of new songs and a couple stories ab... Continue reading "DC9 Live at El Sibil, Ep. 8: Matthew and The Arrogant Sea" >
Here's the thing about Akron/Family: I'd never really even listened to the band before last year's SXSW, when I caught the very performance posted above. Here's what I wrote at the time: I'd neve... The good folks over at Ultra8201 have some pics from the MATAS show at the Parish from this past weekend. Check 'em out here .
We just fell in love with this band Matthew & The Arrogant Sea . They hail from Denton, TX and fall into that whole Fleet Foxes/Shearwater that you all know and love. The band will be opening for Akron/Family and Warpaint in Dallas in February but fortunately for us will be doing a one off show at The Parish this Friday. And since we are in the giving mood (look two posts down) we have a pair of tickets for this Friday's show. Again, all you have to do is DM us on Twitter ( [...]

Hair is controversial-whether you have it or not, how long or short it is, what color it is-it can identify your personality, genetics, your culture. Your employer can dictate how you wear it. Hair is considered so sensuous in some cultures that women must keep theirs covered to keep it from driving men wild. Blondes have more fun, and redheads have bad tempers. Check out Contrast Podcast # 181 for tuneful coverage on the subject of hair. My contribution was "Bad Hair Days" by Mikrofisch. Be sure [...]

Dallas born, now on the wire in Baltimore, Neil Sanzgiri was originally in our local scene with the now disbanded Voot Cha Index . Since relocating to the B-more area, Neil has joined with members of ( before mentioned ) Weekends , Andy Abelow , and Small Sur (along with others) to form Soft Cat . Comprising rich layers while painting intricate soundscapes, this is more than your average campfire sing along. Both "Dark When It Should Be Violet Hour" and "Silver Babies Sun" are slow rollers, but come to fruition before dragging out [...]

Funny People , with director Judd Apatow, and Actors Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill was a highly anticipated movie this summer. I’m a huge Apatow fan starting with one of my favourite TV shows, Undeclared. Even better, George Simmons the character Sandler was playing looked like it paralleled parts of what Sandler’s career has become (lots of shitty movies). First things first, this movie IS funny. There are a ton of penis jokes but funny even when the plot point borders on depressing. This movie however is not good for a variety of reasons. It’s a [...]

Low is playing Dallas tonight! And we get an interview!! Slow start to the week of live music in DFW, with the exception of the always amazing Abe Vigoda at The Cavern last night. I hope someone went. Unfortunately, I didn't make it. I've seen Abe Vigoda at least three times, and not only do they put on a fantastic show, but they're also super nice guys. The very promising Seattle art-punk trio Talbot Tagora , who I've never seen, opened the show. Their upcoming album Lessons in the Woods or a [...]
