Matthew and The Arrogant Sea are a 6 man group out of Denton, Texas featuring 4 family members (it's obvious with 3 of them – they share a surname). Each member has their own solo project ranging from Ambience to Folk, Electronic to Pop. From all six members they were able to mash up styles to form an album that mixes folk with experimental tendencies. Fortunately for me, Matthew and The Arrogant Sea have every right to be arrogant as they've released an absolutely wonderful release. Unfortunately for the rest of the internet, I've just read mediocre [...]

Speaking of Denton love , a couple of blogs have posted free downloads of some tracks from both Matthew and the Arrogant Sea 's upcoming and Centro-matic / South San Gabriel 's latest albums... Really, you should have Dual Hawks , the Centro-matic/South San Gabreil split double-disc, already--what are you waiting for?--but, if by chance you don't, the blog It's Hard To Find A Friend is offering one song from each band (Centro-matic's "Two Seats Gold Reserved" and South San Gabriel's "When Will The Angels Put Out Their Lights") for free on its [...]

Straight out of Denton, Texas comes the large and in charge force that is Matthew & The Arrogant Sea. Fans of Flaming Lips, Sufjan Stevens, These United States, or Fleet Foxes might dig some of the music put together for their new album Family Family Family Meets The Magic Christian . The album itself is somewhat mixed up, but generally comes across like an epic journey through some sort of fantasy quest of emotions. A few songs sew hard-to-pin-down percussion to soothing vocal harmonies and strummed guitars (thus the Fleet Foxes comparison) while others clash and bang like towering [...]

mp3: matthew and the arrogant sea - pretty purple top hat "i was sitting on an orbit floating off in space... when your pretty purple top hat hit me in the face..." it'd be pretty hard for any song that began with such a premise not to do it for me... but while the lyrics sucked me in, they're just one of many things that have kept me coming back to matthew and the arrogant sea. i accidentally discovered that the song works really well building and looping on itself when visiting the [...]
Twin Cities: - Haley Bonar and Brother Ali both sat in on Radio K recently, performing short studio sets in support of the station's 15th Anniversary. Bonar's set covered "Bad for You," "Big Star," "Tiger Boy," and her version of Tom Petty's "Yer So Bad." Brother Ali's set included a few new songs including "Good Lord" and "Baby Don't Go," as well as a few older tracks "The Puzzle" and "Philistine David." I'm not gonna say the "Quit Your Day Job" interview Stereogum posted with Midlake 's Eric Pulido today necessarily treads through any undiscovered territory-- it doesn't --but it is still a nicely packaged piece that allows fans and readers a quick entree into Pulido's two non-band entities: Cappulido (his fair-trade, home delivery coffee service) and Nova Posta Vinyl (the vinyl-only record label co-run with fellow Denton musician Robert Gomez . And there are some interesting tidbits. Like this one, for example, which explains the "Oh, [...]

I was going to write a blog post about the new Radiohead video, but then Thom Yorke did my job for me. Via deadairspace : hellomy mind is not functioning at the correct speed at the moment thanks to being in Tokyobut however and hereis one of my favourite video things that has ever happenedfor Reckoner it is, the result of somebody entering a competition to make an animation to one of the tunes on IN RAINbows.on aniboom. you can scroll down dead air space and find all about it.. but anyway so we asked them [...]

Matthew and the Arrogant Sea - "Within the Universe" Light legless swimmers, graven telephone bugs, tambourinic candle flames, everything moves at least a little bit to the beat. Because I don't know who this song is meant for (I hear no pride in "all my friends are aliens, baby") I can only assume it's meant for me. The way forgetting to lock your front door, forgetting to turn off the shower or the oven, and coming home to those first little signs that everything inside is different, little "I didn't leave it like that" signs, were [...]

Sorry for the lack of posts on the Devil's blog for the past week. I've been away in Stratford. Although I took my laptop along to enable me to keep the world abreast of the latest and greatest in the field of new music the hotel was a wireless free zone and therefore I was unable to share my views with the world. I did, however, manage to get to see a Shakespeare play (The Merchant of Venice if you're interested) and surprisingly managed to follow it (well some of it) even laughing in the right places (admittedly a secod [...]

Matthew and the Arrogant Sea's eerily named full length Family Family Family Meets the Magic Christian isn't a Republican diatribe (it wouldn't be on this blog if it were) BUT it is the first release from the newly formed label Nova Posta Vinyl, which is an LP only label created by Bella Union recording artists Robert Gomez and Eric Pulido of Midlake. Matthew and the Arrogant Sea , like Midlake and Robert Gomez, are from Denton, Texas and share more than a passing similarity to Midlake as well as groups like Fleet Foxes [...]
happy birthday, little buddy! this pic was taken shortly after losing a hard faught battle with the corner of a wall. sadly, he and his head lost. the remnants of the battle can be seen around his right temple. dont know about you, but i was pretty disappointed by todays ipod unveilings. sure, the nano looks actually pretty sweet, its hard to fit hundreds of gigs of shit on one. dont even get me started on the touch refresh and they drop the 160 gig classic. feels like they are going backwards here. i know the classic will [...]

Matthew and the Arrogant Sea - "The Wizard" . Okay, yeah, I gotta admit - this is what the theme-song for a wizard ought to sound like. No harps, no celestas - just some explanatory notes and then a long electric jam with the repeated intonation, HE IS THE WIZARD . Because the essential fact of wizards is not their magic, their beards or their pointy hats; it's the fact that they kick ass, all over you, 'til you're a crumpled dweeb of a warlock who's asking meekly to be allowed to go. [Out in October! MySpace ] [...]
I've spent most of the weekend going through a months worth of e-mails and mp3's and all the other stuff which fills your inbox if you neglect it. There is a huge amount of music in there for me to listen to and I'll get through it as quickly as I can so if you have sent something in please be a little bit patient, it's probably in the pile and I'll get to it as fast as humanly possible. One of the best records I heard over the weekend is an album by Commodor who come from [...]
