Matthew Barber 's most recent record is self-titled for a reason. Its scope is pulled way back compared to his previous work, so much to the point of leaving Barber bare- it's him, alone, taking the reigns and (self) producing a document that is the most honest, exposed, and pure version of himself to date. For the second time this month, Soft Signal is premiering an exclusive performance, and this time it's Barber stripping things down even further. He recently took his guitar to a cliff in Victoria to deliver an achingly lonesome rendition of the album's penultimate [...]

Matthew Barber released his sixth album named after himself on June 7, 2011 with the Outside Music label. The Toronto singer-songwriter produced this self-titled work in his basement home studio last winter. Every instrument and vocal on the album were created by Barber alone. He also recorded and mixed all of the tracks. The Canadian musician has been making music since his collegiate days at Queen’s University. Barber’s first album was released in 1999 and since then his folk rock sounds have increased in production quality. On this release however, he decided to make a record that was [...]

It's rare that a self-titled LP fits the sound and scope of a project as well as it does for Matthew Barber's latest record. After collaborating with the likes of Howie Beck and Hawksley Workman, the talented song writer opted to scale back his sound and take complete control of the reigns by releasing a collection of self-produced and home recordings. Scaled back and pure, the songs are far from hallow or empty. The melodies Barber presents are strong, varied and ultimately complete, but this is the most exposed Barber has [...]

Sometimes stars align... and other times they simply tour together. While not household names, Matthew Barber and Oh Susanna have talent in spades. If playing fields were level, these two song writers would be viewed as Canadian music royalty. Thankfully, the two have joined forces for the "He Said, She Said" tour and The Carleton gladly welcomes the duo . Remarkably, you can see both artists on June 20th for only twenty bucks. I know we've talked about Matt incessantly over [...]

by teepoo Sorry about the lack of single song posts recently. I broke up with my boyfriend and the last thing I felt like judging was love songs. Especially one about getting married.. but this is a beautiful one by Toronto's Matthew Barber. The song is the perfect proposing song with just simple piano chords and drums. He sort of reminds me of a male Jill Barber . Matthew Barber- Ring Upon Your Finger WEBSITE
Last week I read Tina Fey's new book, Bossypants , not having been a fan of her work prior to picking up the book. For some reason, 30 Rock was just one of those shows that I never got around to watching from the beginning, and I didn't bother getting into it afterward (although I'm half way through Season 1 since finishing the book). The main thrust of the memoir is how Fey handles being the head of a popular network TV show (something that few women get the chance to do), and how she has assembled [...]

Here is another installment of the best of 2010: Canadian albums. This time its from #51-#60. This section I had trouble listing since I had extended from 50 to 75. Now you have to wait for the last week of December to find out the Top 50 Canadian albums of 2010. Let's the guessing and waiting begin. Check out the list. [...]

Toronto - Last week was pretty crazy for shows. Well, if it was too much for you, then this week will be a good down period. Here are some shows for this week in this crazy city of ours. Danko Jones One of those weird music acts thats HUGE in Europe, but barely registers on the radar over here in Toronto, Danko Jones brings a nice blend of honest hard rock to the Mod Club on Tuesday. They are one of Vik's favorite bands and if he wasn't living in Vancouver, he would probably [...]
There's gonna be some more obscure stuff this week because I foolishly left lala running while I went to lunch. Missed out on some of the more popular stuff, but you'll still be entertained. This Addiction by Alkaline Trio - I think this is the second album this year so far that relates being in [...]
Sometimes there are songs that you know from the first few notes are going to be a favorite. One night while wasting time on iTunes instead of sleeping I came across one of these songs by a Canadian artist named Matthew Barber--the song is called "Easily Bruised." There is a great video of the song that you can see here on YouTube. Matthew Barber claims as his influences artists such as Bob

It's not surprising that Matthew Barber's upcoming release - True Believer - is flying under the radar of most of the sites I read and most of the music loving public in general. Barber is easy to classify - essentially he's a rock solid song writer that could charm you with just an acoustic or a piano - but the surprising range he presents when he writes songs makes it almost to lock into a sound or style. His understated arrangements consistently display his talent, but really don't translate into press quotes and hyperbole. He can't be put [...]
