Melbourne is already well renowned for it's influx of talent in recent years. Names need not be mentioned but a relatively unknown duo (for now at least) are preparing for great things themselves. Sleep D (Maryos Syawish & Corey Kikos) have been supporting the biggest acts rolling through Melbourne with the Novel parties, with slots alongside Derrick May, Robag Wruhme, Trus'Me & Matthew Dear to name a few. The Sleep D sound is refreshing to hear, even a city as amazing as Melbourne is prone to trends, and the boys are [...]

Photos by G. Matthew Dear Electronic artist Matthew Dear debuted a full band on March 2, 2012 at a sold out show at New York's Bowery Ballroom. In between dancing my ass off, I took a couple of photos. Matthew Dear <!-- [...]

It's been long known that I have a soft spot for dance music played by a live band- well, I mean, I've long known that I have a soft spot for dance music played by a live band, I don't know what you think about it... Staged at the intimate-meets-ornate setting that is the Eagle Rock Center for The Arts, the fine folks at FYF presented child of Detroit Techno and Ghostly Records' honcho Matthew Dear performing one of his initial full-band (four other folks dressed to the nines including trumpet and guitars) sets on this, his current tour supporting [...]

Matthew Dear played to a packed house last night at Public Works, marking another amazing performance for this year Noise Pop Festival. Kicking the night off right were opening acts Tropical Popsicle, Exray's and the San Francisco-based Maus Haus. Dear is known for his catchy blend of dark synth-pop, which carries haunting vocals and a thick texture of percussion, trumpet, guitar and keys. His band's musicianship is impeccable, and their music translates well on stage. Their distinct sound was never more apparent than on crowd favorites such as " Slowdance ," and the upbeat " You Put a Smell On Me, " [...]
The interior of Eagle Rock Center for the Arts doesn't seem like the kind of place you'd go to a live concert. It seems more like a school cafeteria or a place where kids could do arts and crafts after class. Even with the lights turned low, a stage set up and a (great) DJ playing , it didn't entirely shake this feeling. But, when it came to actually witnessing live music in this space it turned out that Eagle Rock Center for the Arts could actually be quite easily transformed into a space that felt entirely different, as long [...]

I love the downtempo, trip hop, eclectic electronic music label and curator Ghostly International. They do an incredible job of mixing sound with art and design - the Ghostly web site features all sorts of cool design projects, ranging from clocks and watches to original art prints and limited edition vinyl from the Ghostly artists. I also love MixMag. MixMag just posted a great profile about Ghostly along with a promo playlist/mix that you can download for free. Check out the article/profile here on MixMag and DL the playlist:

It's an always intriguing walk with Matthew Dear, as he acts as a tour guide around a warped, sludgy, and irresistibly catchy urban fantasy land. "Headcage" the title track off Matthew Dear's newest EP, finds one visiting a similar locale as initially created with his 2010 album Black City . Starting with a beat that would fit perfectly amidst some sort of futuristic underworld crime joint, Dear adds a "sniffle sample" that only bolsters the illicit feel of the song. Than enters Dear's demonically funky vocals, coated in oil as if he were a beloved pop-star for the robots that will [...]

Your to-do list for the evening: ► With a new EP "Headcage" out in January and the album "Beams" on the way Matthew Dear visits the Eagle Rock Center for the Ars, supported by Mini Mansions and ESP. Veteran DJ and techno producer Matthew Dear releases a short non-techno EP as a prelude to his upcoming full-length. Matthew Dear could never be accused of staying in his lane or playing the conservative. During more than a decade in the electronic underground he's touched on Afrobeat, mastered minimalist techno, and used the strictures of dance music to create techno-tinged tracks that don't really feel like techno. On Headcage EP, Dear shucks techno almost entirely for shifting, ambient soundscapes that might herald yet another change in artistic direction. "Headcage" opens the EP with a...

After the success of his fourth album, 2010's Black City, Dear isn't taking a rest and re-cooperating. Instead, he's releasing this EP, touring, and preparing his fifth full-length, Beams, due out sometime this year. 'In the Middle (I Met You There)' marks Dear's f... Read more..
The texan dj and producer Matthew Dear comes with a new EP called "Headcage". Compared with his previous work, the funky old-school techno "Black City" , "Headcage" sounds like Matthew returned home after an a long party and tries something new, more airy and melodic. The second track from this EP, features Jonny Pierce of [...]

Live This Month: February 2012 (Podcast #270) In Live This Month , we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. The twentieth installment of the Noise Pop Music Festival takes over a wide variety of local venues later this month - and we'll be covering many of those shows - but there are also plenty of pre-NP events worth checking out. Locally, two bands are seeing the release of records for which it feels like we've been waiting forever: [...]

Regardless of what tempo Matthew Dear settles in, his avant-pop always feels strangely nocturnal, meant to be listened to on dark walks through urban jungles. It's not just that Black City , the title of Dear's breakthrough 2010 album, evokes exactly that type of scene, but that Dear's tracks all feel vaguely haunted, as if they were once normal but now exist as warped and darkened incarnations of their former selves. "In the Middle (I Met You There)" is brighter than anything on Dark City , but with Jonny Pierce's stretched-out, drugged-out vocals and a mix that can [...]
