What Would Jesus Listen To? Probably Big Inner. Domino, 2013 8.8 / 10 Matthew E. White proves yet again that looks can be deceiving. Taking in the cover of his new album, Big...

photos by Sachyn Mital Matthew E White @ Bowery Ballroom, 5/13/2013 Last night at the Bowery Ballroom, he was given a lot more space, but he brought a much smaller band along for the ride. Opening with the soft, aching "Will You Love Me," it was quickly apparent that this wasn't going to be a night of horn-and-string-filled chamber pop. Instead, White and his band ripped into the louder sections of the song with a gnarled guitar part and a country-tinged swagger. [...]

Perched on our seats are hand-drawn programmes with welcome messages, lyrics and wildlife sketches. On the inside cover, Matthew E White laments the transience of the live music experience. “We will never again all be together in the same room, under the same circumstances, feeling the same emotions we feel tonight," he says. “Every note that you hear will be gone as soon as you hear it." Humbled, he thanks us for our presence. The gig hasn’t even started yet. Expectation is the abstract noun on everyone’s mind. You can feel the significance all around. This date [...]

Matthew E. White Sunday 21st April | Thekla, Bristol Words by Thomas Spooner When I first heard Matthew E White's Big Inner I got over-excited. It had been a while since I'd heard a man whisper so sweetly over such seriously soulful grooves. I listened to it some more and the hooks went deeper – flesh, muscle, cartilage, bone, heart – as this music subtly tore its way into my being. Then I got around to listening to the lyrics [...]

I went to SXSW, saw some stuff, hugged some folks, and after playing email catch-up, I was too burned out to want to post anything. Now that I'm playing Lately post catch-up, why not throw these on the 'ol blog? This year was easily the best year yet. Great friends, good catch-ups, and a really productive week while less stressful than years past. The Suzan stayed with me in Athens before SXSW, so I was so happy [...]
Martin introduced us to Matthew E. White back in February, and now the American is gearing up to release his next single, 'Steady Pace', on the 6th of May on Domino. While cardboard cutouts moving round might sound promising as a premise for a video, the promo is certainly quirky and unique, just like White himself. Watch it below. Matthew E. White keeps a "Steady Pace" of familiarizing listeners with Big Inner. Matthew E. White has shared a video for "Steady Pace" from his recently heralded album, Big Inner. The video was...

As a child, I distinctly remember creating whole towns out of discarded cardboard boxes and then flying my Spider-Man action figure through the hallowed streets of Cardboardopolis or Cardboardville. It appears as if CoSigned singer-songwriter Matthew E. White had a similar upbringing, as he explores his own cardboard world in the video for "Steady Pace". Once again, White throws on his sharpest ivory-colored tux and dances and struts, this time through a maze of cut-out faces and faux shrubbery, with the occasional break for some psychedelic hand-jiving. Watch the video below; and from one [...]
With his already critically lauded debut Big Inner evidently becoming one of the indie crossover successes of early 2013, Matthew E. White has gifted us the brand new official video for the psychedelic sonic portal of ‘Steady Pace’ – his celebratory new single set for release on Domino on 6 May 2013. The clip, created by Travis Robertson – an artist also hailing from White and the Spacebomb family’s beloved Richmond, Virginia – is a one-way trip deep into the visual heartland of Big Inner, bringing [...]

Matthew E. White released a video last year for "Will You Love Me," and now he has a new one for "Steady Pace," another fantastic song off his 2012 debut, Big Inner . The video incorporates the album artwork, and some charming stop motion as White, dressed in a white suit and shot on a white set, dances in a little modest shuffle. Just like his album last year, it's really hard not to be won over by White's charisma here. Check it out below. Read More...

Going to see my man Matthew E. White tonite, so I'm cool. Here's hoping the bearded spacebomb from Richmond, Virginia takes it easy on the Jesus and turns up the white soul. Matthew E. White - One Of These Days
Having been dubbed a “crafty veteran” by one local bystander, there are a few certain truths that I have discovered seven years deep into South By South West culture. 1) Always carry your phone charger because the battery will die; the ABC’s (Always Be Chargin’) as we here at Spinning Platters like to call it.
