Twelve seconds into The Colorage, a trumpet caps off the end of an crescendo guitar run, practically announcing the arrival of a talented new alt-rock band from Pittsburgh, PA. And while the five-song EP from Yours Truly isn't completely flawless, bigger bands have professionally produced worse LPs than this young trio from the Steel City.

"Which way is Wall Street?" asks Matthew Good, the cool older brother of Canadian alternative rock. It's a warm Friday night in early April and Good is in the middle of a headlining set at the Bowery Ballroom, his first visit to the venue in 10 years. It takes the crowd a few seconds to come to a consensus that Wall Street is behind them. "OK, I want all of you to turn around," he says, "and I want you to give Wall Street the middle finger." There are some chuckles, but everyone does as he asks. [...]
Singer/songwriter Matthew Good will be heading to America for a two-month trek next year, following his recently completed tour through his home country of Canada. After an extended holiday break, Good will start the tour on March 8th with a pair of Seattle dates. He'll then move across the country before ending in Rochester, NY on April 4th. Good is touring in support of his fourth solo studio album, Vancouver , which was released earlier this year. On the record, he focused on social issues within his home neighborhood of downtown Eastside, Vancouver's [...]

Have to say that on December 11th, it was a totally busy day/night. After Bands Undone , I headed off to the CBC building down on Spark Street. There was a live event happening outside in the bitterly cold for CBC Radio 1's All In A Day . Special treat was a live performance by Jim Bryson and The Mighty Popo . There was a bid for the charity to have Jim Bryson sing whatever song the bidder wanted him to sing. [...]
Amy Adams is, without reservation, poised to inherit the romantic comedy crown Julia Roberts was more than willing to walk away from. And after sitting through the dreck of Night at the Museum 2 where Adams's plucky Amelia Earhart was the only redeeming thing, it's evident she could act her way out of a Chinese prison camp (do those even exist?!?) with both hands tied behind her back. Adams is a revelation and there is nothing wrong with the plucky heroines she portrays time and time again. It's a rare quality that few actresses can believably [...]

Filed under: News , Exclusive , Canada Matthew Good is adding his name to a growing list of Vancouver musicians fed up with the stringent liquor laws preventing venues from keeping their doors open to new, independent musical talent. In recent years, the west coast city's move to shut down smaller bars and clubs has choked Vancouver's punk and indie scene, with strict requirements relating to security and hours of operation making it increasingly hard for venues that don't cater to mainstream [...]

Filed under: News , Canada Indie electro-rock stars Metric maintained their mainstream momentum after walking away with the top awards at last night's CASBYs. Organized by Toronto rock radio station 102.1 The Edge, these "people's choice" awards are an acronym for Canadian Artists Selected by You. Online popularity contests may seem dubious, but it would be hard to argue that this hasn't been a breakthrough year for this particular band. Though coming up empty-handed this summer after being shortlisted for Canada's [...]
The strongest tracks on Vancouver are the most restrained, like the stunning "Silent Army in the Trees" that paints a sad portrait of the disillusioned soldier, far removed from the heroic fantasies of their childhood. The message here is clear and unequivocal, supported by lean guitar riffs, rousing vocal harmonies and gentle acoustic arpeggios."Fought to Fight It" comes out swinging with a
Vancouver won't be the only thing Canada will be showing off when it hosts the 2010 Winter Olympics early next year. As it turns out, the country will also be showcasing its incredibly talented and diverse music scene throughout the Olympic's two+ week run, set to take place from February 12-28. Broken Social Scene, K'Naan, Stars, Matthew Good, Joel Plaskett, Steve Earle, Laurie Anderson, Martha Wainwright, Blue Rodeo, Iron & Wine, Corb Lund, Ron Sexsmith, Joan As Policewoman, and Sun Kil Moon are all confirmed to be performing in some capacity at an Olympics related event. Filed under: News , Exclusive , Canada Rio De Janeiro was in the spotlight last Friday after landing the 2016 Summer Olympics over Obama 's hometown Chicago. But from now until the flame is extinguished at BC Place on Feb. 28, most Olympics fans -- and some non-fans -- will be fixated on the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver. The city also happens to be where singer, songwriter, musician and producer Matthew Good was born, raised and, until last December, lived. It's also the [...]

For the past few years, my father and I have taken a week or so at the end of the summer to travel together, just the two of us. This year, we've gone to Germany to visit my brother and his wife, artists who recently moved here to take a stab at the European art scene; I'm writing this, in fact, from outside a Frankfurt Starbucks in the midst of morning rush hour, the only place I could find a decent Internet connection, though the price is pretty dear. It's precious time lost, for a [...]

Emily Haines at SXSW 2007. I heard this song in Club Monaco (?) the other day and thought I must have passed off "Fantasies," the band's upcoming LP, too quickly, because it's quite lovely, and reminded me of the Matthew Good song "Pledge of Allegiance," which I've also posted below. Hey, they're both Canadian. Emily Haines also released a solo album with her band, The Soft Skeleton, in 2006 ( I reviewed it on Stylus ). Her father had just died and the songs are quite personal and depressing, but beautifully composed. Metric are louder [...]

I've got another tune from my favorite Calgary indie-rock band today. Dropkick Queen of the Weekend comes from The Dudes ' 2006 full-length album Brain Heart Guitar . The song would gain popularity after being featured in a Rogers wireless commercial. Last summer (2008) The Dudes played the Calgary stop of the Virgin Festival alongside heavyweights The Flaming Lips , Stone Temple Pilots , Matthew Good , and The Tragically Hip . [...]

I remember the night we drove everywhere just to find a place to commit ourselves to a future together. It was cold, like tonight is cold. It wasn't Valentine's Day. But it was love. Looking back, I can't believe it took me so long to accept that the feelings I had for you were real, and worth risking everything. All that time I thought I was too broken, too battered. All that time, I thought a fool like me didn't deserve a woman like [...]

Two of my favourite artists in high school were Foo Fighters and Matthew Good ....and what do ya know, they both have new material out right now.....The new song by Foo Fighters is outright awesome!!..Sounds very "Color And The Shape " which is not surprising considering Gil Norton is Producing the album (He also produced Color And The Shape)..... and I havn`t herd much [...]
