In January, the marvelous website couchsurfing.org brought us a terrific set of houseguests: a couple from the beaches of California asked to stay in my home while they came to Colorado to pick up the due-any-day baby that they had just been chosen to be the adoptive parents of. For two weeks we got to host them and their brand new little guy, all wide eyes and stretching fingers. It was, in a word, magnificent. We forget that they make people that little, that new. Light as air and just about perfect. As I am wont [...]

top of the day! on day two of my parking wars obsession. first it started with storage wars, and ran through those 19 episodes in a day, and then i found this crazy ass show. as a person who has gotten the boot before, i take full responsibility for my, or actually my wifes actions. of course we had like some 600 bucks in unpaid tickets, but damn, philly gives people 3 tickets and then the boot? crazy! anywho, this matthew sweet boot commonly referred to as shape [...]

One special show: ► Matthew Sweet's "Girlfriend" remains one of my favorite albums of all time — along with the Posies' "Frosting on the Beater," it was the best power-pop album of its era, and deservedly earns mentions on any shortlist of the top power-pop albums ever made. Sweet's sweet melodies and bittersweet lyrics were juxtaposed on the album with gnarly guitar solos from the late Robert Quine (that's Quine, who played with Richard Hell, Lou Reed and Lloyd Cole, among others, on "Girlfriend's" title track) and Television's Richard Lloyd. Now, 20 years after [...]

Frank Yang Most bands that name themselves for prehistoric entities - your Mastadons, your Dinosaur Jrs - seem to do so at least a little for the heavy and/or primal connotations that come with it. Not so much for Brooklyn's Caveman , who seem to have chosen the name ironically as there's nothing raw or neolithic about their smooth and polished debut album Coco Beware . Rather than club you about the head with a bone, Caveman makes an impression with shimmering guitars, floaty synths and tight harmonies delivering [...]

Filed under: Exclusive , New Music , Q + A Matthew Sweet Pure pop maven Matthew Sweet's most recent new album, ' Modern Art ,' shimmers and shines with all of melodic majesty he's become famous for over the years. But he also has an album called ' Girlfriend ' that he's thinking about these days. After all, that pop masterpiece is now 20 years old and he's celebrating the anniversary by presenting the entire thing [...]

In honor of Matthew Sweet's October stop in Indianapolis and recording of this charming Laundromatinee session, I've been spinning his 1991 pop masterpiece, Girlfriend, in heavy rotation. In retaliation to the battle lines that have been drawn over recent decades between pop radio and the more critically adored, relevant music, I've opted to spin Sweet's loveable songs to get back in the arms of a good friend and again remember such a divide needn't necessarily exist. I was merely 8 years old upon Girlfriend's initial release, but I discovered its majesty in the mid 90's and fell in love with [...]

Shervin Lainez You know how the internet basically shuts down when the US goes on holiday? Well it does, and that's why today's post is a bit slight to say the least. And we'll kick it off with a couple of sessions to listen to, watch and download from The Antlers to mark the release this week of their (together) EP. It's a companion to this year's Burst Apart long-player, which contains the remixes and covers that are standard for these sorts of releases [...]
During their initial run in the 1980s, The Bangles were labeled by some critics as a poor man's version of the Go-Go's. It seemed unfair to me. After all, hadn't their three albums – 1984's All Over the Place , 1986's Different Light and 1988's Everything – produced poppy, progressively commercial tracks such as "Hero Takes a Fall," "Walk Like an Egyptian" and "Eternal Flame"? And hadn't Prince himself been so impressed by "Hero" that he wrote the popular "Manic Monday" for the second album? The Bangles had their own sound; the only [...]

"Call me Ishmael." "Four score and seven years ago..." "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." Do I have your attention now? Good. Ah, the power of famous first words. They do more than reel in an audience. They live forever, in books, in speeches and in music , where an album's first impression might not always stick, but a powerful opening statement -- Track 1 to both the iTunes and CD generations -- grabs your attention and gives you reason to believe that [...]

Via NPR Music : Matthew Sweet has been crafting catchy power-pop since the early '80s. He was the toast of the alternative rock scene in Athens, Ga., for much of that decade, collaborating with R.E.M. 's Michael Stipe in a band called Community Trolls, as well as the groups Oh-OK and the Buzz of Delight. But it wasn't until the release of his third album, Girlfriend, in 1991 that his power-pop sound broke through and paved the way to a more successful career. Sweet has been releasing well-received albums ever since, both solo [...]
Last we spoke Matthew Sweet 's 2011 tour included three shows at NYC's City Winery. "Due to popular demand" that number is now up to four. The new one is a late show on 11/2 . The first one is tonight aka Halloween and tickets are still on sale . The 11/1 show and the early 11/2 show are sold out. Matthew Sweet's latest release, the stellar Modern Art, hit store shelves this month and in tandem with its release and Matthew's 20th Anniversary Tour where he's playing his classic LP Girlfriend in full, he's spent the week with TVD for a rummage through his records. The window to win a vinyl copy of Modern Art is still wide open —and we've got one last gem from his collection before we get the keys to TVD HQ back from Matthew. [...]

REMHQ You can't really call it a long goodbye - the announcement last month about the dissolution of R.E.M. was about as abrupt as they come, with no farewell tour or even a final show attached - but shortly thereafter they did announce a final release in the form of the Part Lies Part Heart Part Truth Part Garbage 1982-2011 compilation which is set to come out November 15. And amongst its 40-song, career-spanning tracklist are the final three songs that R.E.M. will release, recorded after the [...]

We're heavily addicted to Matthew Sweet's latest LP Modern Art over here at TVD HQ, and along the lines of "the first taste is free," we've got a vinyl copy to award one of you. Glide magazine condenses my thoughts quite accurately with yesterday's review, "With a dozen cuts comprising the forty-two plus minutes of this album, none meander but instead strictly follow their structure, as on "When Love Comes Falling." The resolution of such tracks isn't the rousing epiphany of pop but slower more dramatic climaxes such as the [...]
