Joe Barbera, half of the famous animation duo Hanna-Barbera, died yesterday at the age of 95 from natural causes at his home in California. Just the name Hanna-Barbera makes me smile, and remember how it would always flash across the screen at the beginning of the best cartoons from the Saturday mornings of my youth. Alongside recollections of watching questionable shows like The Gummy Bears or Chip 'n' Dale Rescue Rangers (I can still sing the songs for both, wanna hear it? Didn't think so), as well as better ones like He-Man and The Smurfs, I spent lots [...]

Matthew Sweet remains one of my all-time favorite guitar heroes although I've felt that some of his work in the last several years has been under-inspired. Girlfriend (1991) holds the record as the quintessiontial, must-have early alternative rock album, making Sweet the king of 90's jangle-rock. Sweet is well-known to play cover songs, some of which are unusual choices. I heard once, but do not have, his cover of the theme of the marine-mammal TV show, "Flipper." He [...]
We don't get to talk about video games here, and that's a shame. I'm a geek and i'm not ashamed of it. So tonight damnit, i'm gonna talk about some video games. Over the years the gaming industry has been in the midst of the overwhelming popularity of rhythm-based games. From the Japanese import Dance Dance Revolution to console classics like Parappa the Rapper that was released in the mid 90's and one of the first rhythm video games of it's time. It's interesting as music and video games go hand in [...]

Johan is the band out of Amsterdam fronted by Jacco De Greeuw. I must admit that when this disc came in the mail it went into the stack without much attention. That, my internet friends, was a regrettable decision. I did however manage to pop it in for a listen earlier this week and wow! Talk about an unexpected gem. After a bit of research it appears that Johan is a bit of an superstar band in Amsterdam, and probably even across Europe. The front cover of the new album shows [...]
Do you remember when I did that little post on The Shins song, "Kissing The Lipless"? That was about a song I knew, but when I heard it again, after a long period, realized how great it was. This time around it's a little different… I hadn't heard this Matthew Sweet song in quite a while, but I had always, and still do, think it's great. So, here's that post about "Girlfriend". When you listen to

Even Earl Hickey has his own soundtrack. My Name Is Earl - The Album is due on September 19th and it's a pretty eclectic set with some pretty cool tunes from Los Lobos, Young M.C., Jerry Reed (his classic "Amos Reed"), Sammy Davis, Jr., Lynyrd Skynyd and Harry Nilsson. Some of the new tunes include Uncle Kracker's cover of The Band's "The Weight," John Hiatt does "Instant Karma" and this Matthew Sweet cover of an ELO classic. Livin' Thing - Matthew Sweet [...]
For Kristin And Jessica Days pass by so seemingly slow Words in my mind are only for show Scattered images cloud inside my head The thought of me without you, leaves so much unsaid Dreams of a life without us apart Dreams of a life that would have filled my heart Pictures of you, trying to envision Dreams of sadness the only provision Clinging to fleeting moments of joy Times where
