The enfant terrible for every musician is the genre label. As I'm sure I have gone over before, the idea of categorization based on sonic factors has all but become an element of musical artistry that has become all but a pure parody of it. From the thousand and one subtypes of noise (power electronics vs. harsh vs. psych vs. free etc.) to the need to call anything with a hint of tape noise "lo-fi [other existing genre]" the manner of calling sound "music" has fallen to the wayside in favour of the fervour of legitimacy through propagation. In a [...]
From TVV, Saturday 27 February 2010 A WEE BONUS POSTING..... By all rights, I should by now be well on my way to the football, but the game has fallen victim to the never-ending snow and rain that has engulfed Scotland since 2010 arrived. So I'm browsing around here putting the finishing touches to the review of the new Frightened Rabbit LP that I'll post on Monday morning. In the meantime, I see that someone has mentioned in the comments left behind in the [...]
It has to be said, The Cold Open is very deceiving with its name alone. With a name like this, it would be fair to expect to hear a deep rooted hate machine turning songs that are loud and possibly obnoxious in their own right. But when you pop in Behind The Mattress , it is not a blast of high energy dad-hating that you hear. No, this is actually a batch of happy-go-lucky, songwriter-oriented pop songs that are reminiscent to the likes of The New Radicals. But [...]

For fans of The Cure, I present Ballerina Black (or if you're a fan of 802s-infused hooks and riffs, you'll probably like this as much as me, too). I came across them as they received their initial radioplay in Denver this week. The trio of Bobby Moynahan (guitar, vocals), Esli Sugich (bass) and Tony Antos (drums) make up Ballerina Black. They are a LA band that takes elements of British New Wave and melds it with elements of the grunge from the Pacific Northwest. The result is a post-punk, grunge pop. Microphones in the Mattress [...]
casper & the cookies are an interesting band. ive never seen em live, but from friends accts they're pretty awesome - they're actually playing the hi ho lounge here new orleans on wed, 3.16. anyway, ive listened to most of their releases, and while they may not always be my thing, they are definitely fun. anyway, they got a free record out thats filled with songs that were featured on comps, 73's, tour only cds, etc. not all of its awesome, but again, if you're into very quirky pop, you will definitely dig this. grab it via their site [...]

A journey along the black music Crake gives us bases in 43 minutes of free usage."Craken" is representing Spain.....Dopeness!" Label: Eggy Records Color: Red Insert: Hand painted on blue construction paper Replayability: 9/10 Rex Marshall was born to record music straight to a cassette tape. Or at least, I like to imagine that this was all in the cards at some point; that Marshall, growing up outside the Vegas strip, took in just as many cheap, warped Human League and Duran Duran tapes as wheezing Elvis impersonators. Marshall records under the name Mattress, and it's an apt moniker—his broken new wave songs feel both cheap and [...]

"Copies of Plantasia were initially given away with Simmons mattresses (!) in the mid 70's, the flora friendly record also came with an illustrated booklet on how to let the music speak to your plants, soothing them with soft oscillations and bouncy electro pop. How this music is supposed to relate to plants is beyond me, but it's all the better for it, since the tunes are so good, many far ahead of their time in the ambient electronic pop idiom. Occasionally dipping into cheeky Perrey-Kingsley territory, these tolerable moments are more than forgiven by some of the [...]
All year round, we dig through Portland's best music to find MP3s for our Cut of the Day feature. We've done 433 such "cuts" since the site began. And 31 (of 49) of our COTD artists just happen to be playing this year's PDX Pop Now! fest (July 25-27 at Rotture). We were already late in posting this year's schedule, so we figured why not just be really late and provide MP3s for those 31 artists whom our radars have focused on in the last couple of years. I mean, if MTV is covering PDX Pop , we best [...]

NICK JAINA, DOVEKINS, RUN ON SENTENCE ( Mississippi Studios , 3939 N Mississippi) You might know the music of Portland songwriter Nick Jaina, but you've never heard it quite like this before: On his new album The Beanstalks That Have Brought Us Here Are Dead , each song is voiced by a different female singer, including Laura Gibson, Jolie Holland, and Corrina Repp. The result is some of the finest work of Jaina's career.
