ACL is more festival than music and I am fine with that. No pit access meant getting to spend more time with friends meandering from stage to stage. I did have my "little" camera with me so I could share some of the random things seen during the three days. Head on past the break for some images from Friday. Easing into the Festival with Cults was a good idea. This is the second instance of seeing Foster the People booked on too small of a [...]
Here's the legendary Ms. Staples with Win doing the Band's stone-cold classic " The Weight ," live and onstage from this past weekend's Outside Lands festival in San Francisco: Read More...

Image via @Bonnaroo Over the years, the great Mavis Staples has teamed up with a slew of musical heavyweights for spirited covers of The Band's 1968 classic "The Weight". (See: Billy Bragg , Elvis Costello , Cyndi Lauper , Michael Franti , and, most recently, The Decemberists' Colin Meloy .) At this weekend's Outside Lands Music Festival in San Francisco, Arcade Fire's Win Butler got his chance and you can watch the duo's rendition in the video below. The rehearsal picture above comes compliments of @bonnaroo . [...]

Those of you who listened to Toadcast #180 – The Corsicast (which is all of you, right? right?) will have already been introduced to the rather excellent Mavis the Dog. This is their second album and can be downloaded for free from the band's website here . Given what I am listening to at the moment would you be at all surprised to hear that this is really lo-fi? Grumbly, buried vocals and plenty of fuzz on the instrumentation - pretty much classic Happy Toad at the moment. Instead of being angry garage [...]

Mavis The Dog is some dude from Philly named Scott Olsen who's making some totally weird but also totally awesome lo-fi jams. He hasn't told me anything and there really ain't that much to it so what else should I say except that I'm absolutely stoked right now on the lazy, sundrenched suburban early afternoon melancholia that's dripping out of every note on Olsen's "second album" which is up for free right here . Mavis The Dog - Too Sad to Move Mavis The Dog - Susie in [...]

Half way through this damn post I find out that LooseL!ps already posted it like centuries ago. I thought I was gonna be the hip/cool cat that got this out there :( Well, I'll post it anyway - love me some 802s synth-pop and Boy and Bear's vocals are mixed in nicely. I guess this is another lesson in organizing my music/ being more timely with my posts . I'll learn some day... Snapdragons Genre: Electronica Styles: Electro, Indie, Punk Name: [...]

Mexican Mavis - Boy & Bear call for him.

Hey Australia, you guys got some dope bands! Boy and Bear is a five piece band hailing from the continent that is truly churning out some quality music lately. Any band that cites eighty percent of its members being able to provide vocals, plus one dude who can rock a mandolin, is OK in my book. Mexican Mavis has a sweet simple melody, a light playful guitar, and a super catchy singalong quality to it. The pop influence is obvious, but we like the Southwestern feel to the group - having a solid lead vocalist doesn't hurt either. The only [...]
I wrote on Boy & Bear a couple weeks back, and the post was extremely popular. This came as no surprise, because the band is nothing short of awesome. (While on the subject—did anyone manage to catch them at SXSW?) Great news, now I've got some more for you! The other day I received a track in my dropbox from a producer named Snapdragons, who had remixed Boy & Bear's single Mexican Mavis. To

' Carnivals ', the purveyor (or purveyors) of quasi-anonymous tribal beats from out of Sheffield, UK. 'Mavi Kara' appears to be the first release, and is one of four songs in length, comprised of four trippy and abstract electronic instrumentals (the tag feels more appropriate than 'songs') which retain a certain element of earthy experimentalism (per early-Yeasayer) which drapes the whole project in some flailing yellow and green imagery. 'Drowning' is perhaps the most directly gratifying, with a spritely acoustic ring which dives out in anticipation the psyched out funk section which is to follow. 'Leeda' is similarly themed, but [...]

Boy and Bear Mexican Mavis.mp3 If you had told me two years ago that the guitar music of choice in 2010 and 2011 would be of the Folk variety I would have found it hard to believe. I still do, but the recent successes of Mumford and Sons and Laura Marling are impossible to ignore and it's testament to people's willingness to explore all music genres. How else can you explain Dubstep and [...]

I admit it...it's the weekend, and I'm a wee bit lazy (and sick... no, this time it's not self-inflicted, and I have all the keys beck on ym laptop aside from "q" now, thank you very much...Don't ask...) to think up (or even think about) anything to post, so...it's another mixtape that I've taken from Stytzer (naughty me!)! It's often the best way to introduce you to things I haven't got round to writing about yet (and he makes such beautiful tapes!)... You will notice a slight re-post of a Charlie, Don't Surf song, [...]
If my blog was of even the slightest importance I'd immediately start hyping these 10 bands/artists (Well I guess I'm already doing my very best at hyping them, though I'm not all that successful/any good at it): Anamia Webpage Myspace ...But It Wasn't So Back Then [mp3] [...]
